Wash your hands, keep your passwords safe — hygiene in 2017

Password storage and computer ‘hygiene’ are critical for security, especially in the blockchain world. Here are a few pointers to keeping your system secure.

Computer security is a big deal at the best of times, but in the crypto world the safety of your funds absolutely depends on it. If a hacker manages to gain access to your wallet or exchange account and withdraws funds, you’ll almost certainly never see them again.

Password security

It’s amazing how many people still choose weak passwords. It’s phenomenally easy for a hacker to try a long list of popular passwords or combinations of characters, and the more predictable elements there are in it, the easier it is to guess it correctly. Make sure the safety of your funds doesn’t rely on a string of characters that includes your name or date of birth or — worse still — something like ‘qwerty123’, ‘abc123’ or ‘password’ (all surprisingly common). One incident from a few years shows that even people who should know better choose weak passwords: the vice president of Intel had his account hacked. His password? ‘Pre$ident’. Aspirational and, at the same time, remarkably dumb.

Blockchain security

In the crypto world, security goes far beyond your choice of password itself — that should be entry-level stuff. You can find up-to-date guidance on how to create a strong password on the web, and the requirements differ from site to site, but as a minimum you should create a string of alphanumeric characters that does not resemble a word.
But it’s not just the nature of the password: it’s how you use it. Specifically, you should not be reusing passwords. The risk is that if a hacker acquires a password for one service, poor practice on your part could mean that many other doors are open to him. In particular, be careful about using the same password for your email account that you use for the services you sign up to with that email address. Most exchanges will send a notification and approval email on withdrawal, if you don’t have a separate form of 2FA activated (which you should, assuming it’s available). That security mechanism counts for nothing if a hacker gains access to your exchange password, only to find that Christmas has come early and he can use the same password to approve his theft.

Online money

The rise of online banking and electronic transactions has brought with it an appreciation for basic security. Identity theft and fraudulent card transactions are part of this landscape, and banks do everything they can to avoid the associated costs. That means imposing security requirements on customers — the right kind of password, 2FA and so on. But the reality is that, unless the theft of funds is down to absolute negligence or dishonesty on the part of the customer, the bank will pay for it. Where possible they will reverse a transaction, and if this is not possible they will absorb the costs themselves. Commercial bank money (which accounts for the vast majority of money) is centralised, and customers get the advantages of that as well as the downsides.

Electronic money 2.0

Unfortunately, it can be easy to carry that reassurance over to the world of blockchain money. But there is no central authority, and responsibility for your funds rests with you alone. There have been countless occasions on which a crypto wallet has been emptied — sometimes of millions of dollars — because a PC has a keylogger installed, or passwords have been saved, unencrypted, in the cloud.
If you own a significant amount of crypto, you must use cold storage, or reliable multi-sig (the recent Parity bug shows how important it is to audit code properly). You can find instructions for how to create really cold storage here. Should you ever access a cold wallet, consider it ‘warm’ again, and move funds somewhere colder! It doesn’t matter how low you think the risk of theft is: if it happens to you, it’s 100%, and by then it’s too late. Better safe than sorry.

Key storage

Where you keep your crypto keys is important, too. Your average burglar probably won’t know what to do with a QR code for a cold wallet, but why take the risk? Besides, you also have to protect against loss or damage. Plus, in the event of your death, you should leave instructions for your loved ones about how to access the crypto funds. A safety deposit box is a good option, or preferably two. You can keep keys in a safe on the premises too, of course. The only problem is that should anyone find out they’re there, and deem the sums of money involved worth the trouble, you’re at risk of what experts term rubber hose cryptanalysis…

I still have my TIME token that I earned during its signature campaign. Just hoping that its price to come back up as it is very low right now and would not want to sell at these prices. I don't know what's happening with the dev team of this project but hopefully, they follow their road map accordingly.

Isn't the price the highest it has ever been?? What was the high you are referring to?

In BTC the price was ~ 0.014 in May.

True, but around the same market cap that it is today. I tend to look more at market cap than I do at the BTC price. The drastic price increase in BTC since May has caused the reflective price to decrease in that sense. Means you were better off holding BTC than TIME.

Sorry, this is not true. Other coins are much higher now (in BTC!) than in May - despite increasing BTC.

In other words: Chronobank was #47 at coinmarketcap.com (https://coinmarketcap.com/historical/20170305/)

Today: https://coinmarketcap.com/assets/chronobank/#markets --> 149...

It is a tragedy Roll Eyes

I hope someday the markets will see the potential of this project, today it's extremely undervalued imho.

If you would have cashed out X number of coins in May versus cashed out now it would be the same amount of cash in your hands. Walmart stock has had some dips but it is about the same price as it was in May. You wouldn't say it has gone down since Amazon stock has gone up.

Yes, of course, there is plenty of coins that has beaten the pants off of the % of BTC since then. Just because there has been plenty of coins that has performed better than TIME, it does not mean the price has gone down.

I've been in Chronobank for quite a while, longer than most. I believe in the project and think it will climb up. I don't see it doubling or going crazy like some of these others in a couple of days but it I feel like it is a good long hold.

Eventually Chronobank's platform will launch soon and it won't be like Maidsafe which has three years of delayed launch. When that time comes, expect it to at least double or triple in value.

So how's the project going in 2 sentences? We need some good news. The price in BTC terms is on its historical low. Lower that early bird ICO bonus price.

I suppose, development team didn't convert their ICO investments into fiat, so they got +400% in USD terms additionally, so development and marketing now is really well funded.

As far as we have an internal feature to manage LH tokens for different regions we decided to extend it a little bit and make it publicly available.

I have no idea and i feel really sorry for the hard working team at the moment.

BUT as soon as the big players will pay attention for Chronobank the price will rise dramatic.

I was very sceptic over time, but now i am very very optimistic for the future and i buy as many TIME as i can.

There is

 - a great product with no competitor
 - tons of new features
 - almost daily updates from the Devs
 - a very motivated, kindly team
 - nevertheless a very low price

The interview with the CEO (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waCl80Axlf0) was also very conclusive for me. As soon as the product is developed, there is still a lot of money left for marketing. I think international press and the whole market will be interested. At the very latest Chronobank will finally get what they deserve.

For the same reason they apparently arranged for a known scammer using a hacked account to 'lend' them a few hundred BTC during their ICO period to show higher levels of interest than there actually was:
Chronobank. Where is my money?Huh?? I did what you asked and lived up to my part of the deal. Now it's time for you to pay up or im going to bring a shit storm on your head.
The clock is ticking.

Hey,

We'd be happy to help you if you have any issues. However, could you be a little bit more specific, please?

Yeah, your fucking boss asked me to put in btc and told me I could have them back on the 15th. I've been emailing and messaging him since the 15th and he's ignoring me.

I WANT MY FUCKING BTC BACK NOW! 375 BTC ARE OWED TO ME FROM YOUR BOSS

Because irrelevant wallet features are easier and cheaper to hype than implementing an economic business model through the supposed underlying employment-agency platform everybody was promised.

It's price was too high from the start which is major cause but if you compare them in fiat them there is no loss. Price doesn't stick because it is moving upwards and downwards in same pattern from the start. When price reaches at some point there is small pump happens timely if you loos at the history carefully. There will be many up & downs till something concrete comes out.
