From my perspective, just going there and returning back to Earth (no Mars to stay) until there are practical reasons to return is worthy.

But, of course, there might be scientific reasons to keep there a team. Including searching for economic reasons to go there in numbers.

I think there are much better projects, like underwater cities and moon bases. Mars is distant, has not many interesting resources and transporting them to Earth is too expensive.
I don't know why mars project makes some people wet their pants. The whole idea of martians and us living there is a fiction, created for the masses.

If it is too expensive, local governments must do this kind of project, so we can have a new planet, or new space to live on. We cannot predict when will be our Mother Earth last. we see a lot of effects of global warming, a lot of changes in weather, some mountains are pre occupied and other effects due to climate change. We all know that our earth is almost occupied by people, what if on the future? Where our next generation of family will live?

Searching for economic reasons?  How does one do that?  I would package a hundred exploratory robots and send that rocket one way.  Call this Option A.  Assume each probe lands a different place MIRV style, 2/3 survive and explore two years each.

A manned mission to Mars is little different than a two year stay in the ISS, right?  It's eight months each way more or less.  Call this Option B. Assume one month to four months on Mars.

A = 2/3 survive * 100 probes * 250 hours/month * 24 months = 396,000 hours of exploration, 66 locations

B = 4 * 250 hours/month = 1,000 hours of exploration, one location

If A and B cost the same, I'll take "A," because I view it as a really serious effort with the highest payoffs.  "B" does not appear serious in that sense.
