How different is trading from just gambling? I know there seems to be a  big difference with technical analysis and whatnot, but in the end aren't you just betting on something completely random?

Trading is not gambling because gambling is a game for entertainment and trading is business and investment..
Trading is a good choice to invest and it needs to study in order to make a good profit.. that is why people are losing in trading because they are deciding a wrong decision.. investing in altcoin is very risky.. much better to trade with bitcoin every time the price is increase set your own margin..
try this site for analysis https://bitcoinwisdom.com/markets/bitstamp/btcusd
If you can see the right side you can see wall for buy and sell.. and the movement of trading is fast. not a movement of fluctuate..
much better to stay in bitcoin the more you invest the more you can make a good profit..

Its similar to some forms of wagering like betting on horse racing or poker.
You are taking an educated guess. Doing research may give you a slight advantage which, over time, may allow you to make more money than other players.
But its still definitely a form of gambling.

Sorry i think type of your question same with another thread this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1727706.0 (Can trading be considering as gambling), you can read and see the answer, trading and gambling is completely different, the biggest thing in gambling is based on luck but trading based on knowledge and analysis.

Trading is like gambling but it doesnt mean you are gambling literally. Gambling and trading are both risky. These two are different on purpose. Gambling is for entertainment and trading is for business. Gambling is more luck and trading needs more analizing. For more definition. Just search it on google.

Because in trading you invest and suddenly your investment does not become double or zero, whereas in Gambling that is the case. What skills do you require to understand and play roulette?  Smiley

Maybe if you mean binary trading I agree if it includes gambling, because we only determine the price will rise or fall. But if the other trades that are not included into gambling because when someone does a trade, then there is a certain risk limits that have been made to maintain the capital owned in order not to lose. Various calculations from probability, risk and reward and so make trading arguably requires effort is not easy. So trade is not to bet on something completely random, but there are ways and strategies.

Thanks for bringing this topic on board for discussion. Yes, I do believe that trading is far superior to gambling as far as assurance of returns is concerned. In any condition, you can't predict 100% accurate results what's next irrespective of the study or strategy. However, there is vast scope for study and reach near to the accurate results in trading but in gambling, it's not possible. I am assuming good returns and ignoring minor returns with basic methods.

Trading and gambling is different.
Trading- the activity or process of buying, selling, or exchanging goods or services
Gambling-  to play a game in which you can win or lose money or possessions : to bet money or other valuable things
Trading is more like a business and gambling is a game which you risk your money to gain more money.
But theres one thing they are in common. They are both risky.

i am sure if you think about it, you will realize the difference and how big it is.

for example when you flip a coin, can you say if it will be heads or tails? obviously not. there is the same 50-50 chance and you have no way of telling.
now when you trade, you can not say what the price will be after the period you have in mind, because you don't have a future machine. but instead you can analyze, this can be technical analysis on the charts, or analyzing the news and things that can affect the price and 1000 other things and come up with the most possible scenario. and be more than 90% sure about what is going to happen and make your move.

also the other big difference is how much you lose on a bad move.
in gambling if you bet on heads and you see tails you lose all.
in trading if you speculate a rise and price goes down, you sell at a loss and lose a small portion.

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.
Whales are those who keep buying the dip.

The answer is simple the trade is a type of job and gambling is a type of entertainment. In trade people do not depend on luck but depend on their intelligence and in gambling the person depend on luck but the income from gambling is not sure.

from my experience with being in bitcoin community for a couple of years and trading both bitcoin and altcoins, and also seeing people talk about this topic i came to the conclusion that you need to do what you think is true. what i mean is that if you think trading is like gambling then treat it that way and if not then good for you.
because in my experience we can't change the mindset of some people about some topics such as this one.

In a way trading is gambling but only in part related to luck because you need that too and like gambling it's also risky. But when you trade you use some knowledge and skills, obey some rules, your are part of serious business. Gambling is just fun, the game where you always expect to win but nothing realy depends on you and you can't influence anything and that is not case in trading.

The main difference with gambling is the amount you can close. Trading top altcoins may give you a lot of losses but never all. With gambling it is 'all or nothing' every single time.
When you trade minor alts listed on c-cex or yobit you are however basically gambling with your money.

For a lot people that just blindly invest and buy at whatever price as they take a price increase for granted, that's what I consider to be gambling. But if you purely focus on well experienced traders, then their level of experience/skill is what is the most important aspect. It of course doesn't guarantee you any profits as you also depend on luck for a certain percentage, but it's neglectable as they make enough profits to catch up faulty trades relatively easily.
