I cannot justify belief in a god that would murder innocent children and animals... no real god would do such a thing

There is still such a thing as karma. If a person in a past life has sinned a lot, then in this life can die or long and painfully suffer. Also there is an opinion that the human soul in the next life can be reborn into an animal. So they are innocent in this life, but in the past lives they have done a lot of bad things.

When God puts to death those he is putting to death, He is stamping out the cancer of unrighteous, non-God fearing people. However, it wasn't God's idea to have something like death. That is a thing that people asked for by their actions of eating the fruit in the Garden.

Did you ever hear of vaccination? If you ever were voluntarily vaccinated, you were willingly and intentionally killing all those little animals that were running around in your system.
