Is there a timeline on when you plan to order?  I might be in, but have to talk to some people/get the BTC.

Well the biggest pending we have is for 390BTC let's see if he is committed I'm still waiting on him to confirm in the thread at this point.

Ragingazn628 have you made any progress on setting up escrow or taking payments?  Zefir claims he thinks he has almost enough to make a 2nd order.

Like I said I'm up for an escrow but as someone pointed out I'm not sure how it would work in this situation since I will be ordering from Avalon using the pool's BTC.

Talk with JohnK - AKA Johnthedong... I think he'd be the BEST escrow guy we have here in Bitcointalk and he would definitely be able to work this out for all of us. I suggest he is given a small percentage to take on this though as he runs on donations. Everyone could I suppose add a small % of their buy to the chip order to cover his pain and suffering and worry. He knows his shit and I think most if not everyone who has done escrow through him is happy.  This can be voluntary but we should really all should chip in what we think this service is worth. I do not think 1-3% is unreasonable for the peace of mind JohnK provides for his service.

PS: Everyone's been asking about the fees and appropriate tips for this service. I appreciate a tip for the risk of holding the escrowed Bitcoins, and the time taken to facilitate every transaction. I do not have a fixed fee, but generally I receive 1-3% of the amount transacted, especially when a TX takes more than a few weeks.
- JohnK (As quoted in the thread above)

- JohnK (As quoted in the thread above)

Ok here's what I propose. I will contact JohnK and have him do the escrow.

Steps:

1. We will all send him BTC to a designated address. (1-3% fees for his troubles)
2. He will order Avalon ASICs chips for us.
3. I will give JohnK my address so the chips will be shipped to me.
4. I will handle the shipment to participants and will make it my #1 priority (1% for my troubles organizing and shipping / gas to drive / time etc.)

How does that sound? NO BTC WILL BE GOING TO ME. Only 1 person sent me BTC so far and he will be refunded.

If everyone agrees with this method let's get these chips pre-ordered!

Ok I made a googledocs spreadsheet:

We are officially at 501 w/o the pending funds. Just waiting on ryanfromrethink to respond so we have about ~300 more to go!

I'm not sure why an escrow party would agree to a deal like this.  There's no way for an escrow party to protect against failure to ship the chips once they are received.  It's not like the escrow party can give people their money back, once Avalon has been paid.

That said, I'm interested in ~50BTC worth (rounded out to 600 or 700 chips).  I'll watch this thread to see how the escrow stuff works out.

Question: BitSyncom stated that they would be willing to ship out early samples, for prototyping.  He did not mention how many samples.  If, for example, Avalon can provide 5 sample chips, would you be willing to relay those to the top 5 buyers or something like that?

Yup if 5 are mailed out top 5 contributor would get them. Make sense.

I've never used an escrow before but I believe it works like this.

A wants to sell B something.
B sends BTC to escrow.
Escrow holds BTC until item arrives to B.
Item arrives.
Escrow sends A BTC.

Everyone is happy.

But our situation is different because we have myself, the pool of contributor, escrow, and Avalon.

A + Pool send BTC to Escrow.
Escrow buys item from Avalon
Escrow ships to A.
A ships to Pool

Check out the spreadsheet to make sure I didn't miss your name from the list please.

Yeah, that's why I pointed out that an escrow service isn't going to provide the same kind of protection in this case.  The only thing John would be able to provide, is ensuring that the chips get ordered; he can't really protect them after that.

If you personally had 780BTC, you could give that to John as collateral, but I don't know anyone who would be crazy enough to lock away 780BTC for a few months. Tongue

Please put me down for 46.926 BTC for 600 chips, + however much is needed for fees (currently 2%).

EDIT: Oh, and thank you for taking the time to put all of this together.

Definitely interested. I may not be able to get into this group buy, but I imagine others will take place?

I'd like to learn more about the architecture of those chips and start some preliminary PCB/Schematic designs before I buy in. If they released any documentation for those Avalon chips somewhere (and I didn't see it), could someone point me toward it?

Hmm.. wait a sec. I'm willing to buy 360 chips.

782.1/10,000=0.07821 btc each

360*0.07821=28.1556

28.1556*1,02(fees)=28.718712 BTC

So I have to correct my order to 28.718712 BTC (shipping excl.)

Am I right?

Good with that... just make sure to keep us all updated on shipping via email.

Thanks for checking out JohnK... have lots of trust in this escrow choice!

We are putting faith in the OP... but I like at least being sure the BTC is paying for the chips. Harder to sell off 10K worth of chips than convert 700+ BTC to cash... partial protection at least.

So looking forward to this!

Maybe part of your 1% OP is kept by John until proof of shipment? Not all but some we know you should get something to cover all the time and effort. Thanks again!

EDIT: Oh, and thank you for taking the time to put all of this together.

Thanks! I added another column to show how many chips people are getting (Realistically rounding down because you can't have 3/4 a chip lol). I added you for 47 BTC so you will be getting 602 chips! Just makes math and other things easier a bit.

I went ahead and put in the really long number for the spread sheet too 12.820512820512820512820512820513 CHIPS PER BTC!

So please everyone contribute in BTC and not in how many chips you want Smiley

I got 12.820512820512820512820512820513 from 10,000 divided by 780 BTC - for shipping and fees I will make it separate later once the 780 is reached.

For example I will be putting in 17BTC so I will make another column in the spreadsheet to tell you how much you will be sending to JohnK.

( 17 + (2.1 / # of people contributing for shipping) ) * 1.02
This way it is a lot more accurate so if you want in just in the number of BTC - no weird decimals though please - .25 / .5 etc. is fine.

Interested in 100~126 chips. What's next step ?

I put you down for 8 BTC - you will be getting 102 chips. Look in the spreadsheet for calculations.

Hmm.. wait a sec. I'm willing to buy 360 chips.

782.1/10,000=0.07821 btc each

360*0.07821=28.1556

28.1556*1,02(fees)=28.718712 BTC

So I have to correct my order to 28.718712 BTC (shipping excl.)

Am I right?

I put you down for 30BTC which yields 384 chips!

Good with that... just make sure to keep us all updated on shipping via email.

Thanks for checking out JohnK... have lots of trust in this escrow choice!

Yes good idea. JohnK can keep my 1% until people start getting their tracking info.

I'm in with 5BTC.

looking forward to this. thanks for helping.

added

AGAIN PLEASE NOTE:

I will use this formula to calculate the total BTC that you will be sending to JohnK:

( [# of BTC Contributing to Pool] + (2.1 / [# of people contributing for shipping]) ) * [JohnK + OP Fees]

Oh, one other thing, is Avalon doing any number of chips between 10k and 200k, or is it only in multiples of 10k? Eg, we get enough in the group for 15k chips, will they do that?

I updated it to 3BTC - no weird decimals please ;p

Being new to this community I don't know anybody, so I'm relying on other people for trust, particularly people chipping in a lot more than I am!

I just received his message:

Hello,

We would like assistance escrow with a group buy here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=177994.0

We would like to pay you 1% fees for the trouble. Thank you!
Yes, I can do so. I'm looking for 1.5% here since that is the fee I promised for another similar group buy deal, and that I will be using a pre generated Offline Armory for this. How many addresses will you need?

Thanks,
John

I think it's 10k max per order.
