According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

The only worry I have is we're a market rather than an economy. We need to make 2014 the year when bitcoin destroys western union and is much more widely accepted for buying stuff. Remittance is the killer app.

What if Western union installed Bitcoin ATM's in every shop?

If this (gox) stuff follows the pattern, then get ready for a big bear dump.  Followed by another runup and a sell off back to the support from this morning.  We'll see.

That would be brilliant. They could also put coffee shop next to the ATM to give people something to do while waiting for confirmations.

Looking at this graph, we may still have some room to grow before a correction. StochRSI is still below the red line.

I mean I know WU is high on the fees but at least no-one can do a credit card charge back.

That would be like sticking a plaster on burst dam.

Interesting article:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-11-28/bitcoin-service-targets-kenya-remittances-with-cut-rate-fees-1-.html

tldr: kenyans send 1.2 billion dollars home per annum. mostly through wu

Quote
Western Union and MoneyGram International Inc. deduct $10 to $17 to wire $200 to Kenya from the U.S., including charges to exchange funds, in a process that can take an hour to five days, according to the World Bank’s Send Money Africa price database. BitPesa will charge 3 percent on overseas transfers and says the money arrives the same day. At that rate, it would cost $6 to send $200 via BitPesa.

Interesting thing about africa is they never had landlines widely available. They went straight to mobiles. Similarly most people don't have bank accounts so they may go straight to bitcoin.

I'd fucking love it if bitcoin allowed africa to climb out of the pit the usa/euro has put them in but I won't be buying any blood diamonds nonetheless.

Fully agree. They need to do something quickly or they will be in major trouble because Bitcoin overlaps their core business model.
