i love this space talk in WO. before i was born men went to the moon. and everyone expected us to be in space by the year 2000.

fuck, that is two decades ago. i am over 50 now and the most interesting things that happened during my life time regarding the space frontier is elon musk sending a tesla towards mars and a team of female scientists from india successfully sending a probe to mars with a smaller budget than the movie the martian. (well ok, there were the voyager probes and the hubble telescope, too)

in general i feel a bit betrayed regarding human endeavors in space. whatever happened to the future?
One possibility is that the Great Filter is ahead of us instead of behind us, the Great Filter is an answer to the Fermi Paradox which roughly states that if life is as common as some estimates indicate then where is the evidence? The Great Filter basically states there is a very difficult step, a filter, between the emergence of life and space colonization.

If the step is behind us then space colonization is a given and we will begin as soon as our technology allows it, but if it is ahead of us then this means that either space colonization is way harder than we thought or there is an unknown step that we still need to overcome, like avoiding self-destructing ourselves with our technological advances.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Filter
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox

Or maybe the Great Filter is that space is really really really big.  And getting bigger.

Read "Expanse" or watch it on Amazon Prime-it's actually pretty good, mostly.
Obviously, outer space is in advantageous position vs Earth as earth sits in the gravitational well.
Besides, shooters in a high position almost always win-depicted in so many movies
..some say that this understanding led to a eventual win of Homo sapiens over Homo neaderthalensis.

And Obi-Wan over Anakin.

It doesn't even matter if you would accept the monopoly money for your chicken because there isn't enough of it around anymore. Most people currently use electronically transmitted digits that represent monopoly money and have little if any paper money on hand.

the fun thing is the digits dont even transmit electronically. them sending text messages to each other. and the "money" in account they keep on their isolated servers isnt even lawful money.

Looks as if McAfee is done and dusted for good.
Just don't dabble in those nasty altcoins and you just might do alright.
I'm looking at you Musk & his merry band of Musketeers still fomo'ing on Doge! Grin

Not a big fan of Musk or any celebrity really. I think, his wealth and fame elevates some opinions about how smart and cool he is. But calling someone Vlad the Impaler still isn't as appropriate as calling someone who actually saved lives "pedo guy". But hey, he's rich. He gets to call people out =p
Also, not everyone probably wants to hear what most people wanted him to say. Let the super rally be delayed another year, please;)
Everyone is entitled to have an opinion, and that does not exempt celebrities or any of that kind. They will always have an opinion and even if they have ulterior motives we can't be bitter about it, and there is a divide in wealth no matter what happens, they are still going to be more privileged than us simple plebs. If what you are saying that not everyone does not want to hear him is true then why did he go for an interview the first place.
Like who? Huh
You mean someone like John McAfee?
https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/5/22315494/john-mcafee-fraud-securities-scheme-charges-cryptocurrency

He was just charged with committing fraud from his dealings with those ICOs of several different altcoins.
So I guess he will be dining on O'de cock tonight. Grin

as a kid i thought that the rate of space itself getting bigger included physical objects and that is why we have gravity.  Cheesy

regarding the great filter... maybe the make up of the most important economic good plays a role. maybe the invention of a money that respects the laws of thermodynamics will make all the difference. a money directly tied to energy...

Strangely enough, about a week before the Thai navy came after us a friend of mine told me that he has had friends killed who were trying to create technology to go into space.

Mainstreaming space will definitely open a can of worms and rock a few boats.

One eye opening thing I was told is...whoever controls Earth's orbit, controls access to space for all humans. And eventually the whole world.

This is a good point. Never thought about that.

I question this whole idea.. sounds like more pie in the sky man trying to suggest that he can control nature without screwing it up.. how the fuck are you going to change the Earth's orbit without engaging in major screw ups?  Fantasy landia in science and military matters might even be worse than the fantasies in the etherhead space... or life extension bullshit suggesting that peeps can live until 500 or some other nonsense like that.. . when you would be lucky to get to 100 and still have anything close to quality of life.. a rare beast who makes it to 100 and still has some semblance of quality of life.. indeed.

This was on hacker news several days ago. Some real interesting comments, most think it is not him.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26231674

There's also this on hacker news when Len died.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2723959

One quote from the second link is interesting though I thought

Quote from: pablos08

I met Len in 1999, he was a kid. A cocky kid who thought he knew everything and I wasn't impressed. I think we were arguing about K of N keysplitting. Rodney Thayer said "Yeah, he's like we were at that age." Rodney was gracious and patient, accepting and loving towards Len and I felt obliged to follow his lead. This is a highly improbable description of Rodney, but it was the truth. I became friends with Len and we were coconspirator cypherpunks at a time when that was a wild frontier. We were reimagining our world, riddled with cryptosystems that would mathematically enforce the freedoms that we treasured. Anonymous remailers to preserve speech without fear of retribution; onion routers to ensure nobody could censor the internet; digital cash to enable a radically free economy. We have schemes to decentralize & distribute everything. We imagine complex and esoteric threats to problems we might someday have - we architect futuristic protocols to insulate against those threats. All this is a highly academic geek utopia exercise. I tend to keep it that way, but Len wanted to get his hands dirty. There were times when Len got visits from various Federal agencies over remailer abuse. At first Len would get scared and I'd get him out of the house which he assumed was bugged, and drive around for a while. Especially in those early years, Len was trying to impress us. We invited him to join The Shmoo Group, where I'm a fringe radical, and Len became the lunatic fringe. I'm sure we helped temper his apocalyptic tendencies and at times he even bordered on diplomatic. But it isn't in our nature to acknowledge prowess directly. You only know a hacker respects you if he's willing to waste his time shooting holes in your ideas. I have thousands of messages to and from Len spanning the last decade, and I doubt a single one of them offers any direct praise.

Len got his hands dirty. He committed himself to building the stuff we imagined. I play it safe and remain blameless, but I get to stay balanced because courageous guys like Len fulfill the extremes.

Len, you are, in fact, an inspiration to those of us who inspired you. You made something great of your life. You left a lot behind for us. Thanks for letting me be a part of it all.

the circumference of earth is 24k miles. a space elevator woiuld need to be up probably 22k-26k miles. i guess it depends if this wrap would follow a circumference line or a smaller one. nice problem to think about. thx.

Before you noodle too hard, I very well may be misremembering. It's a fair distance anyway though.

i was serious. it could wrap around the earth several times as long as it does not wrap around "straight" at a "equatorial" line. in what fashion would it wrap around? can someone elaborate? would a cable attached to a spinning sphere always wrap around an "equatorial" line? or could it also use other latitudes?

edit: i think you thought i was being sarcastic with the "nice problem to think about.thx" but i wasn´t. sorry for not making that clearer.

The tether is really long.  It could wrap anywhere.

Exactly it would be 1/10th the way to the moon...
As a reference the ISS space station is at 408km and geostat is at 35786km Tongue
So a space elevator is a big ass object...

This space elevator discussion is very interesting. And it fits well within the Bitcoin WO topic.

See, all WOers are already aboard Elon's rocket and cruising through space tasting White Russians (not just the beverage). But, something has to be done for the nocoiners and the mindrusters down there. I don't see any other option for them, but a space elevator. OK, they won't be able to ever reach us, but going past geostationary orbit sure is better than nothing.

Now, kneel down and pray to Karhu, nocoiners, that Elon is going to build that damned elevator soon, or you're going to end up sitting your asses on Earth, watching our $1M WO party in 8K streaming and wondering "what if I HeDL?"

$48k (40k €) is pretty much established.

2017's ATH was $20k (17k €). That's 2.4x in just over 3 years, and with a severe Bitcoin winter in between. Try to name any other investment that would have given you this much profit.

For Bitcoin to equal the yield of a normal bank savings account with 2% annual interest rate (rare these days) in the period between the ATH of 2017 (buying the top) and now, Bitcoin price would have to drop to just over $22k (18k €).

The above assumes one has "bought the top", right at the ATH of 2017 ("worst" point to buy ever in Bitcoin's history up to that point). Any other time would result in higher gains, orders of magnitude higher in the vast majority of cases. Banks/stonks don't stand a chance.

Just let this sink in.

Onwards & upwards.

HoDL.

Edit: Added paragraph, made statements stronger/clearer.
