Yesterday, a neighbour asked me if I know anything about "cryptocurrencies". A couple of years ago I would jump at the opportunity to explain to him all about it, teach him how to set up a wallet, open a Kraken account, etc. Now, I just replied "I've been reading about it, seems to be a thing. Don't know much more than that though, sorry..."

Can't be bothered anymore. It's the same old story, the more others know about you and what you can do, the more work and trouble will fall on you, because, in the end, it comes down to human nature. Everyone's looking for a free lunch, a pill they can swallow and suddenly solve their lives' problems. Well, I say "fuck you, get on your bike and work for it."

Hm. I checked my records and I got into Bitcoin in late 2012 when someone told me about it in casual technical conversation. Granted it's a problem that I had been working on since the mid 1990's, but when I heard the concept that each block had a checksum that included the PREVIOUS block's checksum I suddenly thought *FUCK, THAT'S IT!!!* and started looking.

If that person hadn't talked to me about it I wouldn't have really given it thought till the mid 2010's. So in honor and respect of that I'll give a basic discussion to anyone who asks. And if they start arguing about how it USES THE WORLD'S POWER or is a fraud, or HOW ABOUT THIS SHITCOIN I'll just say "sounds like you already know a good bit, nothing I could say can further that" and start talking about hookers and blow or shit like that.

If someone has a root already nailed into their mind it's pretty impossible, pointless, and annoying to try and weed it out. Better to let life do what it does and let them learn for themselves. Glinda understood this with Dorothy, that's why she had D loot the Witch of the West and follow a pointless road.

Oddly enough I had a root already in my head and saw bitcoin as the right solution to the damn problem of what happens when some fuckhead hacks the database chain and changes an earlier block. And here we are.

$60,000 still seemingly too tough a nut to crack. It’ll break soon enough but I wonder how long we’ll have to wait.

I have it set to play George Clinton's "Big Pump" at 100k. And I don't care if I'm in a meeting with a CEO, when it goes off I'll be dancing on the nearest flat surface.

It also should sink in that Microsoft essentially makes all it's money putting a new version # on a piece of software that it perfected 2 decades ago, and all the world's corporations and users are forced to upgrade to it no matter what. You "pay" to continue using the same shit you already paid for many times over.

Yep, very special species indeed.

Not content with charging monopoly pricing for their shitty software, they have now loaded it with spyware and adware too.

Unfortunately, some people who know I have bitcoin seem not to care for my opsec and will happily discuss the fact that I hold btc with anyone they feel like. Which is annoying, since I don't go around talking about anyone else's finances. So I am wondering how to address this issue. It didn't seem to matter many years ago that I had told a few of my friends about my btc holdings but now, at these prices, it's something I wish I hadn't done.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Pretty much everyone...

I've had a really fun dream last night. I am not joking, here it is: I was in my very big yacht with some friends having a champaigne party. I was kissing some girl, when I remembered I haven't checked the price for a very long time - a year may be. I started connecting the laptop with some antenas and got online. Then I saw the news that Bitcoin recently had hit $1 000 000. I got very excited remembering that I had over 5 Bitcoins kept for that occasion. But... I completely forgot my key phrase. I knew that I had another complicated method to get access to my coins from the files on the laptop, but in the excitement I couldn't remember that either. Then I noticed a green ligt in my eyes which started running as a small dot over the deck. I realized that this is a laser aim of an armed USA drone. I looked up at the sky and I saw a missile heading towards my boat. I managed to run and jump in the water and after that the boat exploded. The water was on fire which started to spread above my head. I was swimming underwater keeping my breath until I escaped the fire. Then I began to doubt that this was not real but a dream. Of course in RL I have neither millions nor a yach nor a GF. But guess what was the only thing that seemed unrealistic in this whole story? That's right - I haven't checked the price for a year!!! That's impossible! Everything else is completely legit, it can happen! That's how I know that these boating accidents are true!!!  Wink

Sorry, really hope you don't mind, but your dream was quite inspirational:

-snip-

I'm sure it's possible to figure out some relaxation technique to help the rich bitcoiner remember the key phrase - or at least part of it. She's just got to try a little harder, before the Feds come and spoil the party. That would give the dream a happier ending.

For sure, the story seems to be begging for a sequel because of the missening of some kind of ending that would have happier within it.....  not to be too maniacally focused on only one angle of the story - which surely is good as told in the Ivomm variation (if such a dream actually happened as he told it, is surely interesting in itself in terms of what kinds of dreams this cat is having) and also interesting in the BitcoinBunny variation.... with pictures that really help to flesh out some otherwise under appreciated details.  By the way, I am sure that Ivomm's variation had pictures too, and gosh dreams can be detailed and even visual but sometimes will also fade away if they are not somehow captured in a timely manner, at least in the experiences of yours truly.

I was speaking to my friend who swapped all the bitcoin I sold him for some useless shitcoin that, of course, went to zero and he now proudly told me after buying some more that he no longer has any bitcoin. Apparently he's all in on eth so at least not completely retarded but still... he also cited the energy thing.

People are being fuelled by greed and getting in on the "next big easy money" and are ending up clutching at straws and rationalizing their shaky choices. If you ask them what their alt-of-the-week brings to the table, you rarely get a satisfactory answer.

It also gets old being asked "What do you think of X alt" to which my reply is typically that there are more than 7000 alts.

Wow I thought I’m alone in this... trust me I used to sit down with pen and paper to explain this to my seniors and peers. And most of the time it would end like “oh that’s a big bubble”...or “I didn’t get it, prove to me how Bitcoin is worth $6,000”.... “there are only 21 million bitcoins, that’s not how money works”.... and most of the time usually will stop here when they will hear “yes uncle, you need internet all the time”.

I just keep everything to myself or put it here on WO Smiley

Yup, I've definitely stopped tying to explain btc to anyone these days. It's not as if there isn't enough info on the interweb now for anbody with sufficient motivation to go and find out for themselves.

I introduced several friends to bitcoin in 2013. One invested almost immediately and hodled for a few years, cashing out most of their stash near the 2017 top. They made a tidy sum but their stash is now very small and they've largely missed out on this run.  Another friend left it far too late to buy in, and did so near the 2017 top and also bought a load of shitcoins because they "couldn't afford bitcoin".  Roll Eyes They then panic sold everything during the following bear market and made a huge loss. The other day I was disheartened to hear that the same person is now buying shitcoins again. They did at least admit that they should have listened to me properly in 2013.

So I feel like I was half successful with the first friend and completely unsuccessful with the second friend, even though the info I explained to them was identical. So my conclusion was that some people are just not ready for this and I can spend my time in better ways.

As the old saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink."

Unfortunately, some people who know I have bitcoin seem not to care for my opsec and will happily discuss the fact that I hold btc with anyone they feel like. I was. I jumped out of it.
Everybody asking me about my bitcoin (exception: my mum), i tell them i had to sell them at the bottom to pay for the extension of our house.
I also say it was worth it, and that bitcoin is the greatest thing since the internet.

Oddly enough I had a root already in my head and saw bitcoin as the right solution to the damn problem of what happens when some fuckhead hacks the database chain and changes an earlier block. And here we are.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm also eager to explain things to people, it's in my nature, some even say I'm overly enthusiastic and even talk too much and over-analyze things (a similarity to Jay, perhaps?). That's all true. I'm happy when others are also happy, especially people I care about, and I always like to share my enthusiasm and help them understand a new idea and how it can benefit them and the world.

The thing is, I've tried to explain Bitcoin to several people in the past, and, sadly, almost all of them outright ridiculed me, especially at work. Back in 2016-2017, I could hear them whispering about how fool I was and how I would lose all my money and how I could not understand that Bitcoin is a Ponzi or a Pyramid, or a fraud, etc. Even then, I politely tried to explain that they were wrong, showed them YouTube videos, even set up wallets on their phones and sent them $1 coins. Nothing worked. Only two of my friends listened to me and bought some BTC. One bought almost 3 BTC and is now the richest member of his family, and the other bought 0.X BTC and is now crying like a baby for not buying more when I told him to.

I'd like to think that I'm not a vindictive person, but 2021 has so far been the most satisfying year for me, in that most of the people mentioned above have now realised who was the smart one and who was the fool, and are slowly admitting it. The less selfish ones are apologizing to me, want to talk about it, and are asking me for advice on how to buy BTC, and shitcoins too, actually almost all of them now want shitcoins! The more selfish ones keep quiet and some still dismiss Bitcoin.

Long story short, all of the above has left a bitter taste in my mouth. I've found that people generally believe what they want to believe, no matter what you tell them. They've made up their minds, and it's pointless to over-analyze things. Just say "yeah, Bitcoin is a good thing, it's a revolutionary thing, it's the future of money, all of us should look into it", and stop there. That's enough. Let them take that seed and grow it themselves. If they don't, they are not worthy of your effort, time and energy.

tl;dr: As strawbs wisely said: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

[editet out]

Thanks, mate! This was exactly how I saw it. Great work! And I guess the comments that I'am in a peaceful state of mind are correct. I have never been happier in all my life! But not completely happy, yet! Although in my small and poor country I may be considered rich as fuck, I can't afford big yachts or lambos. Ok, may be a cheaper yacht, second hand lambo, 1 or 2 villas at the beach (here the prices are 5x lower compared to the USA or EU resorts), and last but not least - no need to work for the next 35 years if I retire now. For now, I am considering the last part - the early retirement, later to have the things that I can afford and bring me joy  Grin

These kinds of retirement and retirement early issues remain quite difficult to anticipate - especially when trying to figure out if you can live within the income of your accumulated wealth, and if you are young enough, you surely have to consider sustainability of such value to be able to support you in such a way that you would not be dipping into the principle in the early years.. which likely would mean that you need to try to keep building your wealth and making sure that you are able to live reasonably within the income generated from such already existing wealth.

Surely we have heard from some members that health and medical have remained very BIG expenses and even unknowns when it comes to such calculations - and surely that will vary from country to country but still remains a pretty BIG factor and a potentially BIG expense that needs to be considered on an ongoing basis and even a projected basis.  Another thing would likely be considering whether any of us retired regular or retired early peeps, might be considering our expenses in terms of staying in one place (which would bring some additional certainties to the matter - but not really resolve all aspects of uncertainties) or if we might be traveling, changing locations or attempts to maintain multiple living locations, and surely those kinds of changing or maintaining multiple locations options would be bringing a whole hell of a lot more variation in terms of not only some expenses involved in traveling/maintaining multiple locations but also in terms of having some assurances regarding medical expenses that might vary in each location.. which surely the medical component also becomes more important as each of us should be expected to age..

and get the fuck out of here with fantasies about either living very long life or NOT having age-related problems because you are so rich and lucky.. blah blah blah.. sure some folks are more lucky than others in terms of genetics and surely money can help to potentially live a better kind of healthy preventative lifestyle, but no matter what there does seem to be decently likelihood that everyone should be considering some of the aspects of additional expenses that go into medical components as we age.

As you know, you are one of the few I have on ignore, but this time I decided to take a peek at your scribblings, and I must say, I do agree with your conclusion, it sucks to be you.

You passive-aggressive, selective-reading turd.

You know, I just realized I could buy a thousand dollar bill on Ebay. Son came by and looked over my shoulder:

"Hey Dad, what'cha looking at buying"
"Thousand dollar bill"
"How much does it cost?"
"About $3,000".

"I think you're getting shafted" says my son...

Yeah, he's a little bitcoiner too....

Is that a true story lightfoot?

Your story (that is almost in a haiku format) did inspire me to do a quickie google search on the topic, and surely I don't want to get too distracted into such a collectors issue, but I did find an overview description on wikipedia to be an interesting summary of one angle of the rare large USD bills situation.

Quote from the wikipedia page:

>>>>>The Federal Reserve began taking high-denomination currency out of circulation and destroying large bills received by banks in 1969.[11] As of January 14, 2020, only 336 $10,000 bills were known to exist, along with 342 remaining $5,000 bills and 165,372 remaining $1,000 bills.[12] Due to their rarity, collectors pay considerably more than the face value of the bills to acquire them, and some are in museums in other parts of the world.<<<<<<<<

Patience.
We had that before, in February.
Just wait out for the higher magnitude pump that breaks through and lifts the price to around $65k, before we get another little correction.
