If you disable merits here then they will just go farm their merits elsewhere, and the good posters here will have less incentive to post, therefore decreasing the overall discussion value here.
Another alternative would be add a local rule that posts that are like the ones you mentioned will be deleted and enforce it, as in you have to post something original too in your posts.

So you guys talk about random stuff and at the same time add more money to your portfolios while merit farmers do their thing for the same reason, more money?

I can't believe this is the first time I post here.😅

problem is half of the users in the WO are merit farmers already. They will win this vote hands down. This vote should only be open to a certain account rank..

Just some honest answer please

I do merit accounts large in this thread … but mainly the known accounts imo.
If I go out of line, inform me, but I try to merit value members and give them some merit ammo to resend on quality posters….

Voted NO as well, maybe something different can be done as only 250-500 rank members can earn some Merit or something.

I voted.

I personally think merits should not be banned.

I agree.

There is a simple way to deter merit farmers from spamming WO: just stop giving them merits and stop responding to their posts. They will eventually go away.

we all know that certain merit sources are giving them merits again and again. so I tend to think inviting farmers is endorsed by theymos.

If you think that OGs are here for the "money" merits you are an idiot.

...

You wanna tell me that the OGs need merits as an incentive to post here?  Roll Eyes  they came here for the community not the merits.
you seem not to know what a high discussion value the WO had before the farmers.  Maybe you have bought your 2014 account ?

Another alternative would be add a local rule that posts that are like the ones you mentioned will be deleted and enforce it, as in you have to post something original too in your posts.

Yeah have someone checking and deleting posts all day... great idea  Roll Eyes

I think that would be a better step rather than disabling the merit system on WO thread. I've also voted "No" only because I don't want the merits to be disabled on this thread. I would go with PowerGlove's idea that the merits should be restricted in a way that only ranked members those who are above Full Member rank should be eligible to receive merits on this thread.

The idea of forbidding of giving merits to particular ranks is much worse than the idea of forbidding them at all. The idea of segregation sounds disgusting. I understand that you or I already have ranks that would allow us to overcome this rank qualification, but the very idea that I can’t send merit to someone just because they haven’t passed this qualification yet looks very unattractive. If there is no way to send something to anyone, it will be just a given, but the inability to send someone personally is oppression.

stuff

It is expected that as Bitcoin gained popularity, people would disperse to other internet places, because that's basically what happened with the older forums, people went to discuss Bitcoin on other social media, like Reddit, Youtube, Telegram, and so on, and if they are real fanatics they could even create their own things and gather their own follower and maybe even get monetized and earn real money with their contend.
That's the path that all internet followed and I doubt things would really change even if the alleged merit farming issue is solved.

Another alternative would be just ban people from posting in this thread if they are repeated offenders, how hard would be ban certain users from posting in certain threads?

Also be low rank is not a funny place to be if you want to post, because of the timeout between posts, so ranking is a factor that may cause a good poster be more or less engaged in the forum.

On topic:

We have Fed Chair Powell Speaks today in couple hours while FTX announces they pretend to sell their crypto assets to return their funds in fiat to their creditors.
If Powell's discourse is hawkish today then we will have the perfect storm for another down in the market, considering September usually is a red month in not bull run years of the bitcoin price cycle. Maybe fill a more or less forgotten CME gap around the 20K again?
Or maybe Powell will say what the market wants to hear and the 20k gap will remain unfilled forever, like the one around 3k?

Any way, better be careful and watch out for sudden moves that could liquidate leveraged traders and don't take short term fluctuations in price today and in the weekend too seriously.

Interesting....https://blog.bitmex.com/kite-or-board/       (Arthur Hayes)
TL;DR
1. predicts that financial repression is about to start (at least in Japan);
2. bitcoin will be one of the main "escape" valves for banks
3. money market funds will soon lose their high yield
4. heavily references this 'academic' paper: https://files.stlouisfed.org/files/htdocs/publications/review/2023/06/02/fiscal-dominance-and-the-return-of-zero-interest-bank-reserve-requirements.pdf
(knock yourself out)
5. bitcoin will not go down below 25K

I like this part

in short, what worked in past idyllic conditions will not succeed in the rough, tumble, and competitive times of today.Using this essay, I want to show readers how the Fed is doomed to fail, and how the more they try to right the ship using Volkernomics, the further they will push the US in a direction that is directly opposite their desired destination. The Fed wants to cool US domestic inflation, but the more they simultaneously raise rates and reduce their balance sheet, the more stimulus will be handed to rich asset holders.

Looking at this statement, isn't it indirectly saying that all the Fed's actions are futile now?
But I agree with the author because looking at the Fed's actions, the more they want to cool US domestic inflation in various ways (including impulsive ways by continuing to raise interest rates), the more they are confused by their own decisions.

what's the point ... if a farmer's account is banned, he will just create another one and continue

a valid concern.
So I guess newbs have to rank up somewhere else then...

I don't think we should have a merit system turning the WO into a powwow of farmers coming to only engage with a few merit sources, or just copy pasting Twitter.  Half of the posts seem to be farming already...
