Portugal granting opportunity for citizenship to individuals investing €500K in Bitcoin.
If this means Portugal will include Bitcoin as an asset in its foreign exchange reserves, it would mean more than just the ability to apply for a passport with Bitcoin investment. Most countries have been too cautious so far, and such a move from a European country would be confirmation that Bitcoin is already being treated as a significant international asset.

I can only confirm that I have not drank coffee or smoked cigarettes for more than 10 years, and considering that I smoked the most expensive ones and drank coffee or cappuccino every day, I saved a very nice amount that I invested in BTC for a while. Somewhere in 2015, when 1 BTC was worth about $200+, you could buy 1 BTC from just a few packs of cigarettes and a couple of coffees

Seem like a bit bullshit... 1) There is no way they can promise the return they are saying 2) They will MOST probably convert your BTC somehow 3) Golden visa or not (for not EU citizen), you have to live minimum 5 years in Portugal as main residency (and more than 183days a year) AND you have to pass official portuguese language test to qualify too.

I wouldn't mind more realistic returns. But I'm seriously considering such a move after this bull is over. it must be a country where they do not treat bitcoin holders as criminals, and the tax treatment is fair. Any ideas, gents?

I am currently (since few years) resident in Portugal under NHR tax scheme (tax free on all foreign income like dividends/interests/royalties) granted for 10 years. Now you cannot apply anymore for that, they stopped it for new applicants. I didnt need Golden visa as i am EU citizen, so it's more easy. But you dont need golden visa / NHR tax scheme to get tax incentive in crypto capital gain. It wasn't any tax on capital gain till 2022. From 01/01/2023, any tax resident in PT (specific tax scheme, or normal one = the same) you have to declare your capital again every year in your tax return (converted in fiat). If you hold it for 365days+ = tax free. If less = 28% tax.

This seems like an optimistic interpretation of things. Portugal's golden visa can be gotten with a 500K€ investment in the country. That's true and the amount is an EU rule somewhere, as some countries were selling their passport for cheaper and pressure has been applied on them to increase the price. As the article says real estate investments were allowed, and this coupled with tax free residency for 10 years for retirees has meant thousands of people going to Portugal and buying flats and houses for 10 times their previous prices, screwing local people royally, so now that's no longer an option. Apparently some financial investments could be eligible and from there the boss of a Bitcoin fund claims you can invest into his fund and get residency but that's a big stretch.

See https://coinmarketcap.com/community/articles/66a11dd5e4405e7236f83e0f/On Twitter he says that "You are 'indirectly holding' bitcoin" ...At first, I assumed that you cannot put bitcoin directly into this fund. Basically, you just give them 500K in cash and they invest in in bitcoin ETFs. However, on the fund page they say: "Turning your digital assets to a key for mobility", so it sounds like the opposite So, it is less clear and more info is needed. I found that they have 10% performance fee and 2% management fee (this probably means 10% off of appreciation and 2% "management', similar to what GBTC has [1.5%]). Seem like a bit bullshit...

You are exactly right about 5 years before citizenship (plus a language test). That said, the site says that you need to be in Portugal only 14 days every 2 years. Basically, a one week vacation per year.

It's two different things. I never heard anyone spending only 2 weeks every 2 years in Portugal and got the PT passeport. This is the minimum requirement for obtain/maintain the golden visa. It's not related to CITIZENSHIP. To apply for citizenship, you have to be at least 5 years tax resident in Portugal and as a main residency. And OFC, you cannot qualify as tax resident there if you spend 1 week or even 2 months per year there.
