Welcome!

To our first e-mail update for the Internet of Coins project. In light of our upcoming fundraiser, we would like explain to you what to expect. Because we aim to be transparent in our communication: if you already frequently visit our Bitcointalk forum thread, read our weblog, watch our vlogs, read our opinion pieces and comb through our tweets, you won't miss out on a thing. If you don't, these e-mails will provide a nice packaged bundle of information regarding the progress of the Internet of Coins project and the latest updates regarding the upcoming fundraiser, starting March 21st. We will update you once per week.


Quick recap: what IS Internet of Coins?

Internet of Coins (IoC) is a platform which allows you to trade digital assets and currencies peer to peer, with an easy to use interface and the opportunity to earn fees from each other by participating in the network. Under the hood, we have been building the client to support the different currency systems for the past two years. The first deliverable is the wallet to control them, arriving this summer. It supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, NXT, Counterparty and LISK out of the box.


Development evolution

Next week, we are starting developer vlogs to keep everyone update on the parts under the hood. The biggest update right now is that the LISK chain has been stabilized and interacts properly with the wallet API. Many thanks to LISKs Max Kordek for his support on this. We are in the process of finishing up the alpha to ship it to our test group in the Netherlands. You can find our published code here.


Campaign growth

Last week we were featured as keynote speakers at the Blockchain Expo London. We'll be uploading the video to our YouYube channel. In the meantime, several additional crowdfunding listing sites have contacted us for interviews. Currently, we are listed at Cyber Fund, and expect to be popping up on more places across the web soon. Translations are being set up, so people can view the site and the client in their local language. We welcome Marjon, our new Translation Coordinator for this.

Joachim recently wrote an article about our foundations philosophy, which gives an impression of our line of thought with the foundation. Fun fact: the guys at Matthias Klees' Federated Blockchain Initiative already made a nice shoutout in their latest animation about EuropeCoin, one of many tokens that will connect to the Internet of Coins.

Topic of this week: trust

With Internet of Coins (IoC) we aim to create a trustless environment in which the security of your value transfer is not dependent on the assumption that you are to trust the person on the other side of the network willing to trade. However, the fundraiser, which we are organizing to scale this project, does require trust. And for that, you sometimes may like a third party to review your options. Which is why we are currently under assessment by rating agencies Smith & Crown and ICOrating. Internet of Coins is are already listed at Cyber Fund. Through our cooperation with established escrow partner NLnet, we aim to provide a solid basis for long-term continuity. Their 20-year experience as an organisation supporting open-source initiatives has been a great help. But of course don´t believe just us; perform your own critical assessment. Especially before participating in any crowdfund.


Development evolution

Our alphatest is almost ready for deployment. Amadeus has worked hard to build the interface for the hardware wallets we are providing to the testers; mainstream users who have asked for a pilot to use cryptocurrencies as a replacement for fiat currency within their community. We have had some requests for a Slack channel, and will set up one to keep in touch with the development community. We usually steer clear of proprietary software, but in this case we´ll make an exception ;-)


Campaign growth

We are multilingual! A team of community translators joined us from Bitcointalk.org who are now translating all our announcements to Chinese, Dutch, German, French, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Including these e-mail updates, so you can always find one in a language of your choice on the boards. Site translations are in the works, expect to see new language options next week. We will also start recruiting some social media ambassadors.


Latest publications

Tatiana Moroz from CryptoMediaHub interviewed Joachim on her show about Internet of Coins. It is a very good introduction to what the network has to offer and what technologies we are using. You can view the interview here.
Currently we are also working on the Funding Terms, to make sure they are available for everyone before the fundraiser starts.

Topic of this week: foundation goals

Someone recently asked us why we were actually pursuing an initiative in fintech, as the market is booming and new startups with global ideas arise every week. Here´s actually the thing: we don´t consider Internet of Coins a financial venture.
Granted, with building a connection between different value systems for asset management we are facilitating the use of financial networks. But it is the technological advancement in personal freedom we are aiming for. The freedom to use any cryptocurrency or asset you like, the freedom to issue your own assets, and the freedom of not having to worry about a centralized third party holding your valuables. We call this social tech. Which is why we are working with a Greenpeace hackathon winner, a Free Press Unlimited developer, a public administrator, open-source hardliners and a development worker on the team. We want to keep our eyes fixed on our goal, which is in the line of ethics and not profits.


Development evolution

This afternoon we had a session with Hans Schaaij, coordinator of a Dutch initiative to build self-sustainable ecovillages. The residents of these ecovillages are the first group of users to test the routing and allocation of our network. After these tests, we will scale up testing by inviting community developers for a public alpha. One of the first lessons Hans gave us: provide big icons in the mobile UI for the elderly. Making things easier is very much about being inclusive. That's what we won't forget Hans :-)

Our site is now available in Dutch and German!
Next week, we are presenting the project at the Dutch event Bitcoin Wednesday. If you are around, we welcome you to have a chat with us. At Bitcointalk we also held a banner contest, the results of which you may find among different news outlets. We thank all participants for their creativity.

Joachim recently touched upon the inner workings of the hybrid token system in a recent article picked up by NewsBTC. Currently we write multiple articles every week to showcase all the aspects of the system before the crowdfund starts. Still, if anything about the project is unclear, just ask. Internet of Coins Launches Hybrid Asset on Multiple Blockchains



The Internet of Coins developers are launching the construction of an inter-systemic and cross-blockchain token called a ‘hybrid asset’. This token allows for the transfer of value between ledger systems without the need to update or adapt existing cryptocurrency source code. The not-for-profit organization has announced a crowd-funding to start on the 21 st of March 2017.

In their presentation on Bitcoin Wednesday at A-Lab in Amsterdam, the team showed a live demonstration of the transactional operating system and its graphical user interface which powers this novel blockchain technology.

The team has been developing the code for the project since their whitepaper release in 2014. Recently they announced their launch campaign under the name Coinstorm, looking to ignite a revolutionary collaboration among cryptocurrency enthusiasts to further decentralize the alternative economy scene.

Joachim de Koning: "Our goal is to create a coherent whole out of the decentralized economy initiatives we see today. There are more than a few decentralized exchange initiatives out there that we are bonding together to form a decentralized financial web.”

Robert de Groot: "With this system we aim to make everyone an exchange, to take away the risks of trusting a centralized third party and to connect alternative economies across geographical borders. Exchanging value should become as easy as swapping files; we aim for Internet of Coins to become the Bittorrent of cryptocurrencies and asset systems.”

Hybrid assets function as a dynamic portfolio, spreading the risk from holding value on a single blockchain to storing it on multiple chains. Technical an economic risks are diversified over the value systems that these assets run on. The design has a strong meta-level approach, and offers those who seek safety from volatility and blockchain failures a new vehicle to store their value.

The founders expect that the distribution of hybrid assets will ultimately lead to an increase of liquidity on the decentralized exchanges, and more interconnectivity of the different cryptocurrency systems that are all implementing their own take on what decentralized value is and how it should work.

The word revolution comes from the latin revolutio, meaning a turn around. It could mean a modification of an existing constitution, or a complete change of it. However, revolution is almost always understood as a quick change. And that is exactly where my pitfall detector starts ringing.

In recent months we have seen many claims of “revolutionary” developments and technologies in the crypto scene. Next to a plethora of new coins being announced, there are also organizations claiming to have “the next big thing”. The many new hypes are often flashy enough to woo a great amount of users of cryptocurrency into investing their coins into these ventures.

Along with many revolutions that have happened in human history came not only rapid, significant changes in (geo)politics and social situations, yet most often also systemic instability and insecurity, loss of cultural identity, and destruction of value. Pitfalls, many of them historically documented, that come back with every revolution. And these mass-behavioural cycles, in circling back to zero, oust unwanted elements out of a system. What can we deduce from this? Revolution also means reinvention and reset, and the effects of this are not solely
beneficial.

Evolution, on the other hand, is less often highlighted in social and cultural contexts. And yet in a manner of speech we often refer to positive development processes in society and in our cultures as evolutionary ones. Nature itself contains many forms of evolution and progression, and it forms a prime example for our own development.

When weighing evolution versus revolution, the team has decided on attempting to navigate a more long term route. Instead of simply declaring another revolution, they seem to rather declare an evolution aimed at augmenting technologies that are already out there. It is the announcement of a project that is aimed at organic growth. Not reinventing wheels, but rather enhancing the current state of money-like informational commodities we call cryptocurrency.

It is possible to bring change step-by-step. To replace the current financial structure all of the cryptocurrency enthusiasts together need to create something so useful that it makes the current systems obsolete. This movement and the work it encompasses are of such magnitude that it cannot be done overnight. So we may want to choose our positions wisely.

With the Internet of Coins project and the other decentralized options out there it may become realistic to start adding stability and overall constructive development to the cryptosphere. Together making strides towards being evolutionary, instead of just revolutionary.

DEVELOPMENT ROADMAP



The project manager of the Internet of Coins team, along with the board of recommendation, will keep track of the advances in development, marketing and all other details regarding the project and its timeline. Updates will be sent out in the form of newsletters to cover unfolding events and milestones reached. Every quarter the developments done will be assessed and planning for the following quarter will be adjusted where necessary to enable a timely response to technological progress outside the project as well as what is happening in the cryptocurrency markets.



PRICING DIFFERENTIATION


The tokens distributed for the Internet of Coins project are called HYBRID. These tokens will be made available initially on seven different blockchain ecosystems simultaneously, namely Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), CounterParty (XCP), NXT Platform (NXT), New Economy Movement (XEM), Waves Platform (WAVES) and Bitshares (BTS). There will be 1000000 (one million) tokens available on each ecosystem. During the crowdfund 900000 (nine hundred thousand) of these tokens will be offered to those taking part. 100000 (one hundred thousand) tokens will be reserved for crowdfund reward payouts.
During the crowdfund the price per HYBRID token will increase over time. Once the fundraiser is over, tokens will not be subject to inflation other than the moments that HYBRID is expanded to new blockchains.

Furthermore, as long as the project has the ability to proceed as planned, crowdfund token holders will receive rewards in the three years following the fundraiser. These will be distributed as follows:
in 2018 5% of remaining 10% reserved tokens,
in 2019 3% of remaining 10% reserved tokens,
in 2020 2% of remaining 10% reserved tokens,
In addition, token holders will receive a 5% token bonus of every new blockchain assetsystem officially hooked up to HYBRID by the Internet of Coins team.



ACCOUNTABILITY

NLnetInternet of Coins is held accountable to how collected funds are being spent by the appointed sequestration organization, the NLnet Foundation. Every payment, whether regular or bounty, must be requested before funds can be spent, to safeguard the financial situation of Internet of Coins, and to make sure developments can proceed in a steady and orderly fashion. In this way all funds vested by crowdfunding participants are legally and procedurally safeguarded.

The pie chart on the Terms page gives an overview of how collected funds will be allocated in the project.
In short, as crowdfund proceedings grow, we intend to scale up more in developers and community bounties.

As you may have read before, we started this project to just build tech. With all our code being open sourced by the Commons Conservancy and our fundraiser expenditures managed by custodian NLnet, we made sure we would be able to do just that. So in terms of governance, we are held accountable for the milestones we set, and what our actions are.

Bearing this in mind and with the Funding Terms being released next week, we would like to announce a one-time offer for the fundraiser first to our subscribers. We recommend to first always read the terms themselves upon release. They describe, among other things:

• the pricing rates of the hybrid tokens issued ($1 per token on opening at any of the supported chains, rising up to $2 at closing June 21st)
  the amount of tokens issued (1,000,000 per supported blockchain type, currently 7 systems)
  the reward system for all participants of the fundraising period:
  5% additional payout of initially raised tokens by participants after the first year,
  3% additional payout of initially raised tokens by participants after the second year,
  2% additional payout of initially raised tokens by participants after the third year,
  5% payout in issued tokens of future added asset systems upon their addition by the foundation to the network
  the amount of tokens reserved (700,000 (10%) for development and payouts)
  the minimum threshold for the fundraiser (less than $350,000 raised for development will always default to a full refund)

As subscribers, we want to extend to you the offer of becoming an Early Bird participant. Early Birds are eligible to receive the hybrid tokens at a 5% discount, or $0.95 per token. Your tokens will be reserved and allocated before the fundraiser starts. The minimum entry to become an Early Bird is a value equivalent to 10 BTC. The funds are allocated at our custodian, and will be fully refunded if the minimum threshold for the crowdfund is not reached.

- Development evolution
BIG UPDATE: our hybrid asset now supports NEM, Waves and Bitshares as well!

This week we gave our first live demo at Bitcoin Wednesday Amsterdam, explaining how we use combinations of blockchains, setting up currency recipes, and providing a first look at our GUI which the alpha group is currently testing. Over the last week, we have received a flood of signups and Early Bird requests. We are going over all of them one by one to make sure all questions are answered. You can also reach us via Twitter or the live chatpage for direct answers.

The final countdown is underway, and there is less than 24 hours left for the last Early Bird signups. We have decided to give all Early Birds a special perk for their support: a hardware node running Internet of Coins.
The hardware node will run an Internet of Coins beta that needs no configuration and is plug-and-play. Its casing is made from wood that is from environment friendly stewarded forests, and is carefully produced in the Netherlands.

Our two founders Joachim and Robert are out and about, spreading the message and giving presentations and interviews about the project in Asia and the Carribean. Joachim interviewed a representative of DigixDao in Singapore, we will be releasing this interview as a NewsBTC episode after editing.


Rough Weather Ahead

On the technical front, no lack of challenges. Our email servers are still not working as well as we would like and we are looking for a solution that is both secure and robust, because we have been entrusted with the private data of our users, that we have a legal obligation to protect. We ask for your patience as our project goes through its growing pains. It can take longer for your email to be answered. If you do not receive an answer, simply send your message again.


Things to be Grateful For

Donations keep coming in and are all well-documented and verified, before they are added to the counter. We are proud to say 280,000 hybrid tokens have been reserved for our donors, bringing us over 90% of the minimum viable goal. We hope of course, that much more will be given so that we can implement all the features we have planned.

There have been some questions regarding where the HYBRID tokens are 'visible'. For now, your registration information is your ticket for our Fundraiser. This means your PIN, the TXID of your donation, screenshots of transactions and confirmation, or the confirmation email. When we pass the minimum viable amount of 300,000 hybrids, development of the HYBRID architecture will start and the client development will begin. When enough of the network infrastructure is ready, each donor will then be given an account that contains the amount of hybrids reserved according to the USD value of the donation at the time of participating. In the course of development, the network will be connected to different coins and token systems, starting with those included in the fundraiser.

There is a double payment here.

It looks like you are missing a payment as well or you maintaned the thread for free on the workweek at "April 3rd 2017 - April 10th 2017" or the workweek at "April 10th 2017 - April 17th 2017", the payment for the workweek at "April 17th 2017 to April 24th 2017 has not been received yet.

At our Dutch headquarters it's still fresh at nights, but spring is out and about and everywhere we see unfolding of leaves and blossoms. All in all inspiring to see the development of the spring season.


Reaching our 300,000 HYBRID first goal
We're almost there! What would this mean? Well, for one it means we'll not have to ask NLnet to refund everything after the crowdfund period, which is a big relief for the team. It is the minimum we picked for the project to be developed by the core fulltime members in the upcoming 3 years. From this goal onwards, we allocate more to external coders and development bounties, all with the aim to speed up research, development and delivery. You can see the allocation chart and timetable on our Terms page on the website.


Campaign bounties

After our forums signature campaign, we received some requests for new bounties. Currently, there are no additional campaigns and we are only working with our existing translators. Currently a new marketing campaign is in the works, and will be ready soon. Once we start it, we'll let you know via this newsletter. Until then, you can always help us out of course by telling everyone about Internet of Coins, liking our Cyber.fund page or following us on Twitter via @InternetOfCoins.


Looking forward: HYBRID assets distribution

A lot of donators have used our donation form to back us and will be granted HYBRID assets. We received some questions on the Bitcointalk forums what would happen with the remaining unissued ones. The team has decided to transparently 'burn' them like Counterparty did with Bitcoin at their launch, as they do not represent a staked value yet. This will ensure a realistic marketcap for the tokens at the onset of trading. At the launch, HYBRID assets will function as one of the transaction backbones of the Internet of Coins network. One of our first goals will be to make their blockchains available via the wallet.
 

Price increase

The next price per unit increase for HYBRID is scheduled to happen on the 9th of May. Until that time the PPU value will be 1.25, and after that it will increase to 1.4.
 

Code development

At the moment coding is being done on modules to optimize functionality, and hook in Electrum client wallets. Some changes are being made to the Qrtz interpreter for better process management. Qrtz is a procedural mechanism developed for controlling cryptocurrencies from modules contained in Internet of Coins.

The Release of the Tokens

There have been some questions regarding where the HYBRID tokens are 'visible'. For now, your registration information is your ticket for our Fundraiser. This means your PIN, the TXID of your donation, screenshots of transactions and confirmation, or the confirmation email. When we pass the minimum viable amount of 300,000 hybrids, development of the HYBRID architecture will start and the client development will begin. When enough of the network infrastructure is ready, each donor will then be given an account that contains the amount of hybrids reserved according to the USD value of the donation at the time of participating. In the course of development, the network will be connected to different coins and token systems, starting with those included in the fundraiser.

Creative endeavours
Over the weekend our signup form was subjected to a hacking spree and received free penetration testing. Around nine hundred attempts were made to compromise the signup form, by injecting scripting commands and URL-crafting. However, ultimately it did not appear to have impacted our systems at all, thanks to best practices in handling user input. As always with the Internet of Coins project, we strive for a robust infrastructure that precludes the possibility to take advantage of it in mischievous ways.

Developments under way
Since passing the minimum viable goal for our project last week, code development has been starting up. Momentarily several of our developers are busy documenting standards and sorting out the various connectivity options for network transports, as well as making sense of the convoluted bitcoin and altcoin protocols, in order to implement deterministic transactions. As you may know, threats continue to arise for the fragile cryptocurrency sector. In all our developments, we strive to create future-proof architecture that will safeguard and respect the fundamental liberties of our supporters.

The release of the tokens
There have been questions regarding where the HYBRID tokens are 'visible' and how donators can know where their tokens are stored. Since Internet of Coins represents a completely novel kind of cryptocurrency development, although we will build on earlier achievements, the infrastructure to carry our tokens will be developed using the (crypto)currency that our supporters donate. At the present moment, this means your registration information is your ticket for our Fundraiser. This means your PIN, the TXID of your donation, screenshots of transactions and confirmation, or the confirmation email. When enough of the network infrastructure is ready, each donor will then be given an account on the newly developed system, that will hold the amount of HYBRID tokens reserved according to the USD value of the donation at the time of participating. In the course of development, the network will be connected to different coins and token systems, starting with those included in the fundraiser.

Transparency of our fundraiser
You can check any of the blockchains listed on our terms page, to verify that the donated cryptocurrency will only be spent on project development, starting after the fundraiser period. We are proud to be part of an alliance with the Commons Conservancy under the reputable NLnet foundation, an official charity under Dutch rule of law, which guarantees that we cannot use these funds except for the purpose of developing the Internet of Coins.

Internet of Coins Update #13 - Send in the clowns
Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who already participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members.

Creative endeavours
Over the weekend our signup form was subjected to a hacking spree and received free penetration testing. Around nine hundred attempts were made to compromise the signup form, by injecting scripting commands and URL-crafting. However, ultimately it did not appear to have impacted our systems at all, thanks to best practices in handling user input. As always with the Internet of Coins project, we strive for a robust infrastructure that precludes the possibility to take advantage of it in mischievous ways.

Developments under way
Since passing the minimum viable goal for our project last week, code development has been starting up. Momentarily several of our developers are busy documenting standards and sorting out the various connectivity options for network transports, as well as making sense of the convoluted bitcoin and altcoin protocols, in order to implement deterministic transactions. As you may know, threats continue to arise for the fragile cryptocurrency sector. In all our developments, we strive to create future-proof architecture that will safeguard and respect the fundamental liberties of our supporters.

The release of the tokens
There have been questions regarding where the HYBRID tokens are 'visible' and how donators can know where their tokens are stored. Since Internet of Coins represents a completely novel kind of cryptocurrency development, although we will build on earlier achievements, the infrastructure to carry our tokens will be developed using the (crypto)currency that our supporters donate. At the present moment, this means your registration information is your ticket for our Fundraiser. This means your PIN, the TXID of your donation, screenshots of transactions and confirmation, or the confirmation email. When enough of the network infrastructure is ready, each donor will then be given an account on the newly developed system, that will hold the amount of HYBRID tokens reserved according to the USD value of the donation at the time of participating. In the course of development, the network will be connected to different coins and token systems, starting with those included in the fundraiser.

Transparency of our fundraiser
You can check any of the blockchains listed on our terms page, to verify that the donated cryptocurrency will only be spent on project development, starting after the fundraiser period. We are proud to be part of an alliance with the Commons Conservancy under the reputable NLnet foundation, an official charity under Dutch rule of law, which guarantees that we cannot use these funds except for the purpose of developing the Internet of Coins.

HYBRID pricing schedule
The next price per unit increase for HYBRID is scheduled to happen on the 19th of May. Until that time the PPU value will be 1.45 USD, and after that it will increase to 1.65 USD when issued. Check our terms page for the authoritative schedule.

 Grandmothers set the standard

Many initiatives in the cryptocurrency world are strongly focused on the latest and greatest features, and making sure to be ahead of other projects in leaps and bounds.
This leaves out a huge amount of potential users who are very interested, but do not know how to use cryptocurrency, or even exactly what it is, and thus need a set of tools that give them a simple and comprehensive experience.

That is why our first focus is making sure our wallet is built to accomodate those who have less tech experience. Basic functionality has priority, in order to leave no one behind. This starts with careful design of how to log in, seeing an overview of and access to funds. Following that is simplifying the sending and receiving of transactions.
We will be testing how people respond to the user experience of the wallet, and how we can make it easier to use.


 Choosing our libraries
 
In the field of developments, we worked last week on formalising the different libraries that will form the underpinning for the Internet of Coins network infrastructure. Not a simple task, since there are many different factors to take into account, such as security, quality and readability of the code, whether it is being actively maintained or abandoned, as well as the licenses under which it is available. Much code relies on extensive third party frameworks or libraries that are subject to change and can be difficult to maintain or simply too large and bulky for a lightweight approach. We try to keep technical dependencies as small as possible.


 Human readable hashstrings
 
One of the things we integrated this week are functions to convert hexadecimal strings (12a0d99ff) to a more friendly form. We chose for the RFC4648 standard, to convert hexadecimal strings to Base32 notation in a bit-safe manner (so that no bits are shifted to a different position). Since we could not find a library without extensive dependencies or that could convert with the simple and direct approach required for our project, we implemented these functions ourselves. In Base32 notation, the numbers 0, 1, 8 and 9, that can be confused with letters like O, I, B and P, are left out. Keep in mind that many people do not primarily use the latin alphabet. The shorter strings, like PBD 7XW ZF2 are easier to communicate, remember and write down, so that non-technical people can also use IoC technology without hurdles.

Happy geek pride day! In the past weeks, we geeks have been laying the groundwork for our software stack. To prove to our backers our serious intentions, we are striving to make an alpha wallet available for public testing, even before the end of our fundraiser campaign on the 21st of June. Of course, we don't know if we will succeed in this ambitious goal, but we will certainly attempt to make it happen. This way, our backers can already take a peek at the software we are developing.


 The case of the missing PIN

We understand from people with Gmail accounts that our PIN emails, and in some cases our confirmation emails, are not arriving at Gmail customers. This is because Gmail uses excessively strict greylist filtering. In some cases, it may help to send a little test email to info@internetofcoins.org and keep this email in your outbox, before you start the donation procedure. Then Gmail sees the address as 'whitelisted' because you have corresponded with it before. However, if you do not receive a PIN email, even after checking your spam box, please use 77777 as your emergency PIN in combination with Gmail addresses only. These donations will then receive extra inspection and verification.

In that case, be absolutely sure to paste the correct transaction ID, which is a 64 character long hexadecimal string that identifies your transaction. You can find your 'TXID' by viewing the transactions coming in to the blockchain address that you are donating to, which are listed on our [terms page](https://coinstorm.net/terms) using a block explorer. The first prototype boards for the development of an open source Internet of Coins hardware node have finally landed on our development workbench. They feature a cool 2GB of RAM and quad-core ARM processor. Additionally, they will be outfitted with an embedded, custom-built and secure operating system, based on best-of-breed software from the Armbian project and using Debian GNU/Linux as a base. In the first instance, our Early Birds will be entitled to take part in the public beta launch for our node ecosystem. Stay tuned for more information on this amazing development in upcoming newsletters.

Virtual Machines and DIY

For those that are not so lucky to take part in our hardware node pioneer project, we will make Virtual Machine images available that provide a standardised environment from which to run a node on any computer that supports VirtualBox (an open source product made available by Oracle, originally created by Sun Microsystems). Of course, hardcore experts will be able to DIY (Do It Yourself) by cloning our node software directly from github, where the alpha wallet code will be made available around the end of the fundraising period and regularly updated as our codebase grows and matures. But for all those users looking for something more accessible, the Virtual Machine images will help to bridge the divide and get up and running with Internet of Coins in a hands-on approach.

At the Internet of Coins Dutch headquarters we were happy to see the fundraiser counter jump to 404,000 HYBRIDs registered yesterday. Most of the donations have been sent in Ethereum and Bitcoin, but we see the NEM, WAVES, NXT, Counterparty and Bitshares community participating as well. As we are entering the last two weeks of the crowdfunding campaign, we thank all who already decided to be part of our journey.

Thanks to the hard work of key members in our team, we are have received a positive review from ICO Alert. The case of the missing PIN

We understand from people with Gmail accounts that our PIN emails, and in some cases our confirmation emails, are not arriving at Gmail customers. This is because Gmail uses excessively strict greylist filtering. In some cases, it may help to send a little test email to info@internetofcoins.org and keep this email in your outbox, before you start the donation procedure. Then Gmail sees the address as 'whitelisted' because you have corresponded with it before. However, if you do not receive a PIN email, even after checking your spam box, please use 77777 as your emergency PIN in combination with Gmail addresses only. These donations will then receive extra inspection and verification.

In that case, be absolutely sure to paste the correct transaction ID, which is a 64 character long hexadecimal string that identifies your transaction. You can find your 'TXID' by viewing the transactions coming in to the blockchain address that you are donating to, which are listed on our terms page using a block explorer. The release of the tokens

There have been questions regarding where the HYBRID tokens are 'visible' and how donators can know where their tokens are stored. We build on earlier achievements, and hence the infrastructure to carry our tokens will be developed using the (crypto)currency that our supporters donate. At the present moment, this means your registration information is your ticket for our Fundraiser. Make sure to keep a copy of your PIN, the TXID of your donation, screenshots of transactions and confirmation, or the confirmation email. When the network infrastructure is functional, each donator will be able to create their own account on the newly developed system. This account will receive the amount of HYBRID tokens reserved according to the USD value of the donation at the time of participating. In the course of development, the network will be connected to different coins and token systems, as well as those included in the fundraiser.

Transparency of our fundraiser

You can check any of the blockchains listed on our terms page, to verify that the donated cryptocurrency will only be spent on project development, starting after the fundraiser period. We are proud to be part of an alliance with the Commons Conservancy under the reputable NLnet foundation, an official charity under Dutch rule of law, which guarantees that we cannot use these funds except for the purpose of developing the Internet of Coins.

HYBRID pricing schedule

The next price per unit increase for HYBRID is scheduled to happen on the 18th June. So now the PPU value is 1.925 USD, and after that date it will increase to 2 USD when issued. Check our terms page for the authoritative schedule.

The fundraising period will close on the 21st of june, the beginning of summer. Only seven more days to register for HYBRID initial tokens and get your donation settled. After that, development will start according to our roadmap (see our terms page for more details). First transaction sent using IoC alpha wallet

As we mentioned in a previous newsletter, we have done our utmost to get a 'live' version of our wallet out there for testing by you, our supporters. We are proud to announce that today at 11:40 the first transfer of value from an IoC wallet to an IoC wallet was made, an amount of 1 LSK. The public alpha is available for testing at http://kth3qittpclsdrk6.onion so you will need to use TOR to access it. It supports just Bitcoin and Lisk for now, so we can test the basic functionality of the transaction mechanisms. Please do not store large amounts of value on this wallet yet, it is to be considered experimental until after more extensive testing and there may be bugs. This is a milestone for Internet of Coins and 'proof of work', to release public alpha software ahead of time, before the fundraiser is even over!

New research grant secured

We have received word from the Dutch SIDN Fund that the Internet of Coins project has been awarded a grant of $70,000 (USD) for further development of our wallet with the decentralized exchange. The foundation stated:

“Internet or Coins creates a system where the exchange of cryptocurrency is democratised and open to everyone worldwide. This is in line with the objective of SIDN Fund to strengthen the Internet. An open and free Internet, which is accessible to all, trusted by the public and seen as a foundation on which to build.”

Crowdfund finished: over 900,000 HYBRIDs registered

Last week, we were happy to see the fundraiser counter jump to over 900,000 HYBRIDs registered. Conservatively, we posted '700,000+' when the crowdfund ended, as we still had to verify a lot of transactions in the last days. Most of the donations have been sent in Ethereum and Bitcoin (statistics), but we saw the NEM, WAVES, NXT, Counterparty and Bitshares community participating as well. Some people donated anonymously without registering, as they simply wish to support the software project that we're building.

The release of the tokens

We were asked questions about when donators will receive their HYBRID tokens. There will be two distribution phases.

Phase 1: Starting next week, we will start distributing the tokens to all those who would like to trade them before our environment is live. Be aware that this is not for the faint-of-heart or the non-technical. Please keep in mind that this technology is experimental and under construction, like Bitcoin in its early days, and we have NO way of knowing how the decentralized markets will react to HYBRID tokens! It may take some time for liquidity to pick up, since HYBRID will be tradable on multiple decentralized exchanges. We could see erratic and/or disparate price movements on individual chains, until we fully interlink HYBRID tokens via the Internet of Coins in 2018 (see our roadmap). If you do not want to face these risks, or are not expert enough in cryptocurrency technology to set up multiple chains by yourself, we would advise you to wait until phase 2.

Knowing these risks, if you are technically skilled and wish to receive your tokens to trade at this time, please do the following (see early holders for some pointers).

Create wallets for receiving your tokens on Omni, Ethereum, NEM, Bitshares, Counterparty, NXT, and Waves.
Send an e-mail to distribution@internetofcoins.org, from the same address you used to register your donation, containing ONLY the following information: TXID: {transaction ID's you used for your donation} Omni: {PUBLIC KEY} Ethereum: {PUBLIC KEY} NEM: {PUBLIC KEY} Bitshares: {PUBLIC KEY} Counterparty: {PUBLIC KEY} NXT: {PUBLIC KEY} Waves: {PUBLIC KEY}
Replace {PUBLIC KEY} with your public key for that particular cryptocurrency. Be aware that if you make a mistake here, your tokens will be sent to the wrong account and you will lose them!

We will send you your tokens on all chains (1/7th per chain). This mode of distribution ensures the equal balance of HYBRID tokens across all chains at the start of trading. Note that we cannot offer technical support at this time, due to the small size of our team.

Phase 2: On the other hand, if you are not a technical expert, you will want to wait until the first version of our wallet supporting hybrid assets goes live in 2018. From the Internet of Coins app that we are developing, handling HYBRID tokens will be much easier in a unified interface. If you choose to wait, we will make sure your tokens are safely delivered to you in a user-friendly way.
