This is another major leap for bitcoin. First we have Switzerland who accepts bitcoin to be use as payment for government services and next is Japan which allows bitcoin to be used as a form of financial payment. I know that in many countries merchants accepts payments in bitcoin but on the end of day, they have to exchange bitcoin to local currency.
They can't pay salary in bitcoin or give bitcoin to the banks, for example.

I think that Japan is also playing safe in this case. Yes they will accept bitcoin as payment, however legalizing the bitcoin itself as a currency used in Japan may be a risk due to bitcoin's instability. This is another major leap for bitcoin. First we have Switzerland who accepts bitcoin to be use as payment for government services and next is Japan which allows bitcoin to be used as a form of financial payment. Soon the Philippines will come into the picture when the bangko sentral ng Pilipinas have finished evaluating and will declare the use of bitcoin in the market. Bitcoin will be large after Japans acceptance let us wait for an increase in bitcoins value.

It is really a big progress for bitcoin, Japan will be an example for other countries that may try and use bitcoin in their own countries. There are other countries that are really thinking to use these digital currency, but the thing is it has still many problems to deal with, especially these transactions which are really having a high fees and really slow confirms. And these bill about digital currency will be one of the reason why bitcoin will really give bitcoin a good price.

It seems to me that most people posting here don't really seems to know very much about Japan.   Japan hasn't been unfriendly to Bitcoin and there are even some BTC ATMs around Tokyo.   A lot Bitcoin events have happened in Japan, remember Mt. Gox?  (About 20 minutes from where I live.)

The problem in Japan isn't laws, the problem is the cost of power.   It has been getting better, but I'm still playing about $0.23 / kwh.   There will be some nodes setup and a lot of people will use Bitcoin but probably it will be curbed a bit because electrical power isn't cheap in Japan.

I would not say that it is something exclusive to Japan, there are already some European countries that have a similar vision about Bitcoin.

It's a regulation about the usage of bitcoin and that will all the possible measurements if bitcoin was being used to an illegal activities same with their Yen currency or outside currency. That kind of movement is really a good sign of having bitcoin be accepted fully at 100%, not just in Japan but in any other country that will follow the same or already existed there.

Just keep in mind that if the regulations or any laws about bitcoin will be pushed hard, expect a fiat life with bitcoin life as they will have same regulations that will applied legally.

I pointed out why earlier in this thread, it is the cost of electrical power.   In Tokyo we are paying well over 20 cents (US) per KWH!   In China power is probably 1/4 to 1/3 the cost it is in Japan.  So even though the Chinese government is very hostile to virtual currencies there is a lot more involvement.   Additionally the cost of living in China is much lower so that is what drives Chinese involvement.   

I don't think very many Japanese understand much about Bitcoin or even care.  Most of the people talking about Bitcoin here seem to be younger.   A lot of kids seem to know a good deal about it though.   

In some parts of Europe and the US power is pretty cheap and you have people heavily involved on their own, maybe not so much  Bitcoin but in virtual currencies of some kind.   It isn't the law that drives it, it is simple economics.

That being said Japan is used to virtual money.   There are more credit cards now and point cards are extremely popular.   While Japan is still more cash focused that say the US, in some ways people are more used to money being just numbers here.   Most on-going bills are paid from bank account transfers and mostly that is automatic.   The only monthly bill I have to pay is gas and even that I go to a convenience store like 7/11 and pay there.   In fact there are very few bills you can't pay at a convenience store and they don't charge any fees for that.

Japanese are very progressive when it comes to technology.   It isn't the government that drives that, it is the people that drive the government.   However when it comes to safety the Japanese are ultra-conservative.   That is what will slow Bitcoin adaption because Bitcoin isn't very safe in the eyes of many people.

At the least, the danger of exchanges suddenly disappearing with thousands or millions of users money would be minimized if not, totally eliminated.
With Japan officially accepting Bitcoin, local exchanges would be wrapped up in laws and regulation, which would, in turn provide a somewhat safer avenue for the users/would-be.
All they'd have to worry about then would be the intense volatility and p2p transactions.

I known for a quite now that Japan's rate of acceptance regarding Bitcoin is very high but I didn't know that they will actually create a Japan Bill containing cryptocurrencies. Japan is indeed innovative and has a keen eye in looking out for technologies that will become huge in the future. It seems to me that most people posting here don't really seems to know very much about Japan.   Japan hasn't been unfriendly to Bitcoin and there are even some BTC ATMs around Tokyo.   A lot Bitcoin events have happened in Japan, remember Mt. Gox?  (About 20 minutes from where I live.)

The problem in Japan isn't laws, the problem is the cost of power.   It has been getting better, but I'm still playing about $0.23 / kwh.   There will be some nodes setup and a lot of people will use Bitcoin but probably it will be curbed a bit because electrical power isn't cheap in Japan.  

And Toshiba seems to be in trouble regarding that Westinghouse subcompany, not to talk at all about Tepco. But that's just energy politics. How about the growing potential regarding from this piece of news?

I would calculate it as zero, zilch, nada. As you allready mentioned Bitcoin ain't no newcomer arriving at Tokyo, but instead left it's biggest fuming crater right there. I doubt there is still anybody leaving nearby discovering Bitcoin for the very first time.

Well in Tokyo you can find different kinds of ATMs and vending machines so there is no surprise that you find bitcoin ones located around the city which makes people educated and informed about bitcoin even if they don’t actually use it, but the thing that is still not yet implemented is spending it like normal money, that is going to take a while to make shops accept it.

I pointed out why earlier in this thread, it is the cost of electrical power.   In Tokyo we are paying well over 20 cents (US) per KWH!   In China power is probably 1/4 to 1/3 the cost it is in Japan.  So even though the Chinese government is very hostile to virtual currencies there is a lot more involvement.   Additionally the cost of living in China is much lower so that is what drives Chinese involvement.   

I don't think very many Japanese understand much about Bitcoin or even care.  Most of the people talking about Bitcoin here seem to be younger.   A lot of kids seem to know a good deal about it though.   

In some parts of Europe and the US power is pretty cheap and you have people heavily involved on their own, maybe not so much  Bitcoin but in virtual currencies of some kind.   It isn't the law that drives it, it is simple economics.

That being said Japan is used to virtual money.   There are more credit cards now and point cards are extremely popular.   While Japan is still more cash focused that say the US, in some ways people are more used to money being just numbers here.   Most on-going bills are paid from bank account transfers and mostly that is automatic.   The only monthly bill I have to pay is gas and even that I go to a convenience store like 7/11 and pay there.   In fact there are very few bills you can't pay at a convenience store and they don't charge any fees for that.

Japanese are very progressive when it comes to technology.   It isn't the government that drives that, it is the people that drive the government.   However when it comes to safety the Japanese are ultra-conservative.   That is what will slow Bitcoin adaption because Bitcoin isn't very safe in the eyes of many people.   

At the least, the danger of exchanges suddenly disappearing with thousands or millions of users money would be minimized if not, totally eliminated.
With Japan officially accepting Bitcoin, local exchanges would be wrapped up in laws and regulation, which would, in turn provide a somewhat safer avenue for the users/would-be.
All they'd have to worry about then would be the intense volatility and p2p transactions.

This is really a good news that a particular country already accepted or already implemented for bitcoin to be part of their currency which is great and we can really prove out that its not possible for a country to accept bitcoin completely.I wish i had lots of bitcoins and go to japan to spend them without the need of exchanging to local fiat.

A country like japan has a highly industrialize technology base. So accepting bitcoin on that particular country is possible to happen. I dont think that they will accept these alt coins, I think they will just accept bitcoin and bitcoin alone, if you want to pay and you dont have any other way to pay beside your alt coins, I think you must first convert it to bitcoin.

Japan has always been among the first to accept new technologies, so it's no wonder they are willingly accepting Bitcoin now. If there was no Mt. Gox's negative impact I'm sure we'd see much more Bitcoin users in Japan today, and nevertheless they expect the number of merchants accepting bitcoin will rise to 20,000 in 2017. Right now they are about 5,000 which is not bad also.

Acceptance of bitcoin depends on the merchants. If they can handle the volatility of the price, they will be OK. There are merchants now worldwide, who accepts bitcoin, despite of the current country's regulations, they just convert somehow their accepted bitcoins to local fiat currency and they're fine. I don't know about longer supply chains which use bitcoin from the beginning to the end. This could be possible in Japan, after this decision.

XAPO card is natively bitcoin based. Moving Mastermoney or Mastercard electronic onto bitcoin might be hard to establish and unneeded even, there is just that bridge step in between BTC and Fiat to fund the card. I agree that bitcoin can provide us a lot of opportunity around the world, but saying that we do not need to use fiat is a different thing. Even if governments accept bitcoin, we can't still avoid the fact that bitcoin has still it's flaws. And bitcoin's volatility is one of the most reason why many people can't just accept bitcoin as a payment.  There are still instances that we need to use fiat or real money like when we are on a place where bitcoin is not really known. Na, no rules necessary. Just keep the fees high (nobody has to do this actively.. its determined automatically by supply and demand).
If a transaction costs more fees than the chewing gum is worth, nobody will use BTC for these peanuts transactions. So I'm kind of happy with the rise in fees, it's moving in

If you don't think about the background and the technical things, bitcoin wallet can be just an application on a smartphone, so average Japanese people can use it like any kind of fintech applications to send money from phone to phone. For the Japanese National taxes, long-term capital gains requires you own it for 5 years.   Incremental income tax rates in Japan really get up there, mine hit 40% last year.  Another 10.5% on top of that for local taxes.

The Japanese gov know they cannot tax bitcoin, so they are making it very clear that they acknowledge this while also saving face, they are also be very clear that any FIAT profit derived from trading crypto’s will rightly be subject to income tax or capital gains tax. I think BU needs only 75%  of the hash network to implement a fork.   Hard fork is not impossible to happen, Bitcoin had experienced hard fork before so saying it is impossible for Bitcoin to hardfork is  quite wrong.  And I do not believe that Hardfork will have a great effect  negatively to Bitcoin community.  This is just FUD that had been spread around to play with the market.

Er, no. The period when Bitcoin was at its weakest market wise was 2014 ish. That was also the period when the most merchants came on board. Now plenty of them have buggered off.

Merchant acceptance is great for people who already hold Bitcoin and are sitting on free money. It's useless for the average person who doesn't already have it. They have zero reason to buy something to buy something, especially when the process of buying said something is fraught with hassle and volatility.

BicCamera just announced they will start accepting Bitcoin on a trail basis at the Yurakucho and Shinjuku stores.   These are very large multistory stores.    One can buy cameras, phones, computers or even 3D printers and a great deal of other consumer items.   Personally I'm not a fan of the Yurakucho shore.  It is a bit over stimulating.  BicCamera has a long history of trying to attract tourist and will even allow one to avoid the Japanese sales tax if they bring in a passport and aren't a Japanese resident.

A little caution ... 4500 retailers is a good start but it is hardly nationwide.   However I do think the issues with BU and SegWit could cause a lot of harm if they aren't resolved soon.

I also believe that many tourists will use bitcoins in this stores, they will be able to skip money exchanging in Japan, and I know how much bothering is that. Those companies will have to face really strict regulations, because Japan is known about precision and rules, orders, etc. If the exchanges want to "legalize" themeselves in Japan, it won't be so easy. If they were working in the shady area, they will have to come out to the light, and if they were not forcing the KYC and AML regulations hard enough yet, they will have to implement it and I think Japan regulations and the control is strict enough to force them to act like that. For the bigger ones, it shouldn't be a big problem.

I am planning on travelling to Japan by next year and I hope that by that time, bitcoin is a really well known currency and commodity and can be used most everywhere I go there. It would be a perfect vacation where I’d be able to pay my transactions, buying high tech gadgets, riding their trains and eating out while I pay with bitcoin. Correct but think that all want to wait to see how will Japan come to this. They hopping if they come to great success that they will share knowledge but this will be wrong.
