Hey is it imperative that we delete all the other files in there except the wallet.dat?

I downloaded the wallet and updated. I did not delete any files and it seems ok. I have not made any transactions lately though so I cannot be sure that there's no problem.

Only delete the files IF you are having synchronization issues after upgrading to wallet version 1.3.0.0. If it syncs fine, you do not need to re-sync the blockchain.
