I think this is a pretty sweet idea. How feasible is it though? Is this more at the 'hey this a good idea stage' or the 'hey I think I can actually make this it wouldn't be that tough' stage? Smiley

Well, I am definitely interested. Please do invest. I'd probably be looking at 10-20 units, assuming a reasonable price as hinted.

I've done the schematic and I'm partially through the board layout now. Maybe tomorrow will have something concrete. But still pending on Avalon docs forthcoming.

Well high-five to you then sir. You have an excellent product on your hand if it all pans out. You should go full steam ahead with this.

Be fantastic to augment mining rigs with some usb asic's.

Hell open up a new company with stocks at BCT-TC to raise funds while your at it, because I'd like to buy in.

Avalon chips use less power than AM chips. It should be no problem to put 2 Avalon chips on USB stick, check this thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=161715.0

USB is 2.5 Watt. The chip is 1700 mW so ... NO

Max. voltage 5.00±0.25 V (pre-3.0); 5.00+0.25-0.55 V (USB 3.0)
Max. current 500–900 mA (general); 5 A (charging devices)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus
ONLY for USB 3.0.

I have quite old computer so no USB 3.0 but if neccessary I'll add it in form of PCI card or something similar - just make 2x Avalon chips USB stick (560+ MHashes) and let
users do the setting up and other jobs.

Would it be possible to make USB stick that would detect USB version on host computer and switch one of the chips off if USB version is not 3.0?

A solution for you could perhaps be buying a USB 3 expansion card.  I'm not sure but I think most of them are PCIE though, so depending on your rigs, you may be losing slots to video cards.  There may by PCI usb 3 cards though, haven't checked...

at this point, people are willing to pay for 150mhash/BTC (at about 7w)  based on demand for the blockerupter's 300mhash/2BTC. I personally will not invest unless it is at least 250mhash/btc which will come soon. by september we could see 1GHash/BTC based on the cost of avalon chips and competitive designs.

looking at the blockerupter:

basic calculations for $300 investment (asic + microPC/rasperry Pi), 100w draw, 300mHash, and a 10% higher starting difficulty indicates that you would pay off the system within about 4-7 months, and at the end of a year make 50-120% profit, with dwindling returns of maybe ~50% in the entire second year. This assumes that you have an almost 24/7 operation, no failures, and other competing asics are slow to release.

i think if you could use a powered hub (1A or 1.5A per port), you could get 2 perhaps even 3 chips to operate with almost no additional components that are not found in 1-chip designs

24" PCI-E cables with 16AWG wires and stripped ends - great for server PSU mods, best prices https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=563461

I think the comparisons to most of the other ASICs in terms of hashes/$ are missing the point of these - they are cheap and convenient. Many more people would like an ASIC in a USB dongle that they can spend <$50, who are just casually into cryptocoins. Most people aren't going to invest more than a few hundred bucks, let alone a few thousand for one of the nicer ASICs. This is catering even to people who can't afford to spend money on a nice GPU, which is awesome. Smiley

100% will be interested if the price is sub 1BTC, I would probably want to order between 2 and 4BTC worth of them.

Which would be me lol. I know it may come as a total shock to some but hey 2 btc is a chit ton for a guy like me new to mining heck i barely got .005 btc or something so far off my lil ol gt 550 ti so far just testing stuff. I was really excited about the usbminers and getting into it till i seen they got greedy cornering the asic market with hardly no competition and charging 1.99!

Hoping this project kicks off or maybe see some going for around 50 bucks in a few months on ebay so i can start getting into this mining thing more.

I am interested, but really depends on when it comes to market.

<$50 would be nice, but it all depends on when that product is in my hands.

$200 now is potentially a better price than $50 in Sept/Oct (to lazy to do math, but you get my point).
