Earlier I was thinking that the safest way to store Bitcoins was in hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor.etc). But a few days back, I came across a news article in which a guy was saying that he lost some $40,000 worth of coins after he forgot the PIN. If something like that happens, then all of my coins will be gone and I don't want that to happen.

COLD STORAGE! COLD STORAGE! COLD STORAGE! An offline wallet cannot be accessed and consequently hacked.

I agree that cold storage is the best way. For newbies, electrum could be the best option.
You can store your coins in cold storage and all you have to do is save the seed in a safe place.

agree cold storage still best choice , a lot of investor safe their bitcoin in cold storage and its so long time

cold storage also minimize risk about hacking from hacker

Cold storage gives an increased security for the holdings whereas it doesn't provide with the ease of usage same as the online wallets. Another thing is that it's good to use the wallets that has gained good reputation than the new ones similar to bit.ac which ran away scamming lot of users.

One more to keep your bitcoins is install full client like bitcoin core, then encrypt your password.
2 Create usb flash drive with text document where put your paswword, and stay usb drive allways offline.
3 For transaction use copy past password from usb, this protect you from keyloggers

Yes, those way are good. We need to keep bitcoin in hardware wallet then make it not connected to internet connection because hackers can steal bitcoin if they have access to computer where we store bitcoin although only through internet connection. But it doesn't mean that online wallet is not secure, we can use 2fa that will make our wallet safer

Sepertinya sudah waktunya, kalau menurut saya lebih baik lump sum sekarang. 30/01/2024.

What is the safest way to keep bitcoins.

Taken dangers like hacking, losing in to account!

Me and me friends just used the normal type of wallet. An application in a mobile device and so far we do not have some issues involving hackers and losing money or account in this application. It is pretty much secured because my friends are here for almost years but me I am just getting started but they never had a history involving that kind of thing. And for me to be fully secured always change your password or something like that. And you can always withdraw your money to be 100% secured but for me just trust them.

According to me bitcoin wallets like xapo mycelium  are the safest place to store ure bitcoins, XAPO provides a vault to keep it extra safe
In case you loose your account you should try for a typical cold storage .

As I skilled, to keep your bitcoins in most secure way is to put it on a wallet that you possess a personal key in any software program wallet. But the main safetiest and secured pocket book is really a equipment wallet which is Trezor. Viruses also cannot enter trezor.

The safest way to keep bitcoin is in your computer itself encrypted with a password and keeping it in a secure offline computer except when conducting transactions. For someone with a little more technical knowhow creating and storing wallets on a fully offline and encrypted usb with multiple copies is the safest bet.

Cold storage with a hardware wallet may be the safest way, but be careful when it's lost or damaged, and it's a big hassle.

To all those who swear by paper/hardware wallet, how can you then store and secure it? It seems to me you are solving the chance of hacking but introducing the risk of dropping it/becoming stolen in a traditional way.

A trusted wallet is the best way in my honest opinion. Ledger is one of the better ones, small comfortable size, good capacity, and reliable security. Other options are not bad, but you have to be a bit more careful with them.

So if i put the Ledger in my computer and with the wallet on my pc i sent it to the wallet on the Ledger usb then they the coins are gone from my computer and stored on the usb?

the coin or bitcoin is not a physical thing like fiat to transfer from one place to another.
a bitcoin wallet is a place to keep they keys. these keys are used to spend bitcoin, bitcoin which exists in form of transaction outputs stored on the blockchain and blockchain is held by every person around the world who is running a full node client.

so in short you keep the keys on Ledger or paper wallet, etc and then use that key for spending which is known as creating a transaction and signing it.

(i hope i didn't make it more confusing)

Actually, the safest way to keep your coins is how safe you keep you addresses and passwords. After all,  you are the only one who should know them. Also make sure to choose anot e-wallet that has many safeguards like encryptionsome that would keep your coins safe.
