Most Alt coins are completely pointless and just poor replicas of what's already out there with little to no improvement.
The second quotation explains why, very few actually do something new. Most coins are just a slight tweak of BTC or LTC then a new name is given to it. As long as you can trade across the digital currencies, they're all basically an extension of Bitcoin. Notice how Bitcoin dropped $40 right after Feathercoin moved onto exchanges for trading? Alt currencies are a slick way to dilute Bitcoin. a lot of ppl mine alt-coin just to trade for BTC, that's true, and sometime that makes more money than mining BITcoin itself, that way ppl hopping around for alt-coin.

There's no harm in mining them, but yea buying is definitely a risky bet.

I would continue mining bitcoins, because theyr worth something, and would keep some value for a long time.

You'd need a farm of them to solo mine at this point; I think 20Mh/s is the minimum you want before you start solo mining.

definitely mining worldcoins... only one with a decent name and image... in terms of exchange rate, check out the google doc wdc/ltc exchange
They're also the most profitable to mine right now by a significant margin.

I am holding LTC for speculative reasons. The world is just now waking up to Bitcoin. It would be too much to overwhelm people with altcoins at this point.
