No, it always connect TOR first. But when displaying the button does not triggered at the same time, it needs extra process to take a random IP to show from the Tor Network. We wanted that button have interactively change on user side. You can check from Console getpeerinfo
you see no where any real IP either .onion or local networks. You are simply one of them in the DeepOnion seed network You are safe and can enjoy this!!  We can not be mapped or become target like any others.

what exactly is the number of confirmations you need to start staking? Or why is it just "24h+"?

It depends on "your weight" and "network weight".
The higher your weight, the faster you get  onions. And the higher the network weight, the slower you get onion.
So it is like a pecentage calculation.
