If the pool operator was especially evil he could launch a 51% attack. Such an attack is possible even with 30% hashrate, though. This scenario is unlikely to play out. Still, it's good to spread out hashrates.

You'd be surprised. All it takes is an hour at most of an ASIC pointed at it for the difficulty to reach a level that it can never realistically come down from.
