We are working on our own ICO (www.c4f.io) and it is sure not gotten easier to stick out from all the quick scammers and unrealistic projects out there.
However, I think the fundamental rules of any investment still apply.

1) check if the product or concept is backed up by a solid business plan. Read the whitepaper and see if you understand how they will stay in business and grow the value over time.
If they don't have a solid usiness plan for after the ICO, chances are the money raised in the ICO will be depleted (worst case stolen) and the value of your investment goes down.

2) ensure you understand what they are offering and doing. If it is all buzzwords and you don't understand  what they want to do, don't invest.

3) make sure the team is real and they have the skills. They don't need to be 20 years in the market as ICOs offer a good chance for young less experienced teams as well, but make sure they can deliver what they promise.
Most serious teams have now linkedin profiles for the key team members to verify their background.

I personally invest in things I understand and believe in the business plan and have done very well with that strategy.
Good luck with your investments, ICOs are still a great way to make a good return and even more important help some great ideas to get implemented.

If you are just following some communities and some people’s idea and decide whether to invest in ICO or not, then you have to be careful. In Crypto field or not, when you are going to do an investment, there are lot of things you should do. Take your time, ICOs display messages to urge you to invest, but do not get caught by their traps. There are lot of scammers doing huge campaigns and looks very promising at a glance. You have to take your own risk.

Well, it depends of how you spend time to research about this ICOs that you're going to invest because in reality - not all ICOs are legitimate and most of them are nothing but scams.
Spotting good ICOs is a pain in the ass because you need to spend more time in knowing the company, the developers and staffs, the advisors and the whole project as well.

Lately I've changed my decision and now invest only in those projects that have working product or at least MVP, so to say they have something to loose, not just 90% of scammers that only promise to deliver product in x period of time.
