Folks,

I am performing a port of MultiBit for Namecoin.   This will allow folks to have a nice GUI for not only windows, but for Mac OS X and Linux.

Furthermore, you don't have to download the entire block chain!

Anyway,  I started up a fund raising effort:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=387363.0

Cheers!

Hello Namecoin Smiley You were new to me, but I got some Namecoins on the BTCGuild Smiley

I'm curious what I can do with this coin and also I'm curious how Namecoin compares to Datacoin?? If anyone has some info on that, that would be great ;p

Meanwhile, I also introduced you here: http://scforum.info/index.php/topic,8726.msg22728.html#msg22728

curious how Namecoin compares to Datacoin??
Datacoin is designed to store medium-sized junks of data of up to 128 kBytes per transaction. This can result in a very large blockchain size in the future. Development is on it's way for limiting a local blockchain to being a "private blockchain", at the cost of accessibility or access time.

Namecoin is designed to store small key/value pairs where the value field is limited to 1 kbyte (due to a design flaw only 520 bytes are manageable at the moment). Currently a full installation including all index files is less than 2 GBytes. Discussion is ongoing about a moderate increase of the field size, see http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1497

Blockchain/name explorer: http://explorer.dot-bit.org

Two use-cases of Namecoin are already working,
a) identities (useful for OpenId and Bitmessage, see http://nameid.org/ )
b) decentralised and uncensorable domain name system (although enabling standard browsers to resolve these is still a bit of an unwieldy process -- we need developers for a 1-click software installation  Wink )

Other ideas are being discussed or in development, i.e. bond/stock registry, voting system, tor/i2p support, copyright license registry.

Namecoin is merge-mined at 70 % of the Bitcoin hash power. Therefore a 51-attack would be extremely expensive.

With an empty wallet, trying to register a domain doesn't tell me how much I need, it just says fee is 0.

If you use the Namecoin-Qt GUI, the reservation of a name creates two transactions: a name_new transaction, and some 12 blocks later (1 to 4 hours later) a name_firstupdate transaction.
The name_new costs you 0.01 NMC,
the name_firstupdate cost you a standard tx fee of 0.005 NMC even if you manually set the tx fee to zero.

If you want to change the value field of your name again you can do this at any time after both transactions appear in the blockchain. Each name_update transaction costs 0.005 NMC during the first few months. Afterwards one name_update every few months is free of charge.

You should therefore keep at least 0.02 NMC at hand for one name registration.
Do not forget to update your name(s) every 36000 blocks at the latest. I recommend updating every 35000 blocks to be on the safe side. 35000 blocks is equivalent to around 200 days at the current hashrate increase.

NMC trading is still missing from mintpal.com

Let's vote to bring it onto this exchange, sadly it's on 260th place to be added, so there is some work to do.

What if we vote for Huntercoin (76th). As soon as HUC is on Mintpal there is a good chance a few Huntercoiners join us voting for NMC.

Latest QT v3.75 >> http://forum.namecoin.info/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1865&p=11640#p11640

Namecoin v0.3.75
Faster, more robust and plenty of new features.

Windows installer: http://namecoin.info/files/Namecoin_v0.3.75_setup.exe (see hash and signature below)
Other binaries should follow, also for OS X.

Source: https://github.com/namecoin/namecoin/tree/namecoinq-release
Domob has signed a "nc0.3.75" tag. You can check for his signature like this: git tag -v nc0.3.75

Note that if you come from a previous version the first start will take a couple of minutes because some database optimization will take place in the background. It will save you a couple hundred MB.

Make a copy of your data directory (%APPDATA%/namecoin) before running! This version will make changes to blkindex.dat that are NOT backward compatible. Of course you should always have encrypted up to date backups of your wallet.dat file!

v0.3.75
=======
* Add difficulty to RPC block output JSON (Domob)
* Bitcoin port: skip signature verification on blocks before last checkpoint (phelix)
* New checkpoint at 182000
* Update to OpenSSL1.0.1h (security fix for SSL http RPC)
* Czech localization (digital-dreamer)
* Windows installer script for Innsetup (phelix)
* Enforce value length of 520 characters in RPC and Qt (Domob)
* New command line argument -dbstats runs a DB file storage statistics analysis and prints it to the debug log. (Domob)
* Atomic handling of TxDB/NameDB operations, DB code cleanup and optimization. (Domob)
* Even smaller blkindex.dat. Not backward compatible. It will take a while for the rewrite on the first start. (Domob)

v0.3.74-rc1 (never officially released)
=======================================
* allow for atomic name transactions via rpc commands (Domob)
* new rpc commands: name_pending, getchains (Domob)
* Simplified blkindex.dat for smaller file size and faster startup - not backward compatible ("remove auxpow", Domob) - IT WILL TAKE A WHILE FOR THE REWRITE ON THE FIRST START
* Implement name_update in createrawtransaction (Domob)
* More detailed JSON outputs for decoderawtransaction and getrawtransaction (Domob)
* Async RPC calls (Domob: ported from Huntercoin)
* Add toaddress argument to name_firstupdate (Domob)
* fixed memory leaks (Domob)
* listsinceblock (Olgasanko)
* Several performance optimizations (Domob)
* valgrind script (Domob)
* Small updates and fixes, code cleanup

v0.3.73-rc1 (never officially released)
=======================================
* Modified testnet difficulty calculation (Khal)
* GUI: ID-tab (Domob)
* improve name_filter speed (Khal)
* Small updates and fixes
