A while back, I would've made lists like those of btceic, PurpleTentacle and hany103, including films such as those listed above. All good films. I have many of those on Blu-ray or DVD.

But then I started watching films which were critically acclaimed for various reasons.

There are two lists below. One is a list of some of my absolutely favorite relatively modern films generally made for American and British markets with some sort of Hollywood influence. It is the second list. The other is a list of some of my all time favorite films which I would take to a desert island with me. They are pretty much all Asian films, but critically acclaimed to very high levels, often occurring in the top 100 greatest films ever made.

The point is, I am not unlike others in this thread. I have watched and enjoyed the same films as all of you. And I would have named them as some of my favorite films. But I must say, after having explored other areas of cinema, I truly understand why critics also name the same kinds of films I have been naming, as in an earlier post here.

Given that I have been on the same path as all of you in watching films, and came to the same conclusions as you with regard to what constitutes a great film (see the quoted sections above), it stands to reason that there must be something wonderful and significant about the films listed below which would appeal to many of you as well.

Anyway, I will admit that Center Stage is a slow movie, but beautiful and tragic. As for the other films, they're all by Wong Kar-Wai. Best if you go into them knowing you're watching Wong Kar-Wai films. The more you put into them, the more you get out of them. Each requires at least two viewings to get to grips with his themes.

Never saw the American film, which is not related in any way, plot or otherwise, so I won't comment on it. The one I'm talking about stars Maggie Cheung. Please look at the links. I provide them so that people such as yourself can discover entirely new sets of films to explore.

I specifically usually don't mention films which the average guy posting here has heard of. But I also don't mention really obscure stuff even though others haven't heard of them. I try to mention films which are highly revered, critically appraised, and just damn great to watch. Many of them are cerebral though.
