But it would seem to me that having a secure offline savings account coupled with a hosted mobile bitcoin service (checking account) for payments would make sense. I mean I guess obviously if you're making payments you can't have everything in cold storage so some compromises on security must be made.

I won't say that all wallets are completely safe^
Safe are the ones that are Trustable and user friendly and secure.
I have always used a wallet in mobile nothing else thus Till now thankfully I have not faced an issue also the Trustable ones do take a lot of commission and everything else thats their only down point but then again..if ur buying something nice then you gotta lay for it right ?
I think in the future those offline mobile wallets will just include a strategy to somehow pay using them instantly ..there are mobile credit cards and everything now thus Its completely possible.

Mobile wallets and payment services will have their own way with security as they believe the phone will always be in the user's possession. Hence, it wouldn't have a 2FA or a similar system and instead rely on other security measures like a 4 digit pin (at least blockchain.info wallet)
While this isn't fully safe and can easily be cracked, it is the service provider's responsibility to set up enough security to protect a user's money in the case the phone is lost.

Yet again, nothing is ever completely safe. But the only thing which is going to leave you with the most control of your bitcoin on a mobile device is only going to be a few wallets, which include BreadWallet. This is due to the fact that they don't store everything and allow you to have complete control of your coins, which means owning your OWN private key.

Plus they allow you to use 2fa, so this does remove the ability of people to steal your coins -- unless they steal your phone but that's an issue with using bitcoin all together.

https://www.buybitcoinworldwide.com/wallets/ios/ - Check this for some IOS wallets, I'd think they have a tab for android as well.

Currently I am using an online wallet and they have an application installed on my cellphone.  As of the moment I have never encountered any untoward incident about it.  It is safe since there is a 2FA.  And the security of our bitcoins stored on this wallet is in our hands.  We should be careful on signing in and logging in on website that we do not know.  We should not give information on some investment site that might steal our bitcoins.

Yeah, blockchain offering encrypted mobile wallet so it is safe to use for bitcoins upto 1BTC,and it is providing mobile confirmation so no one can authorize your transaction from other mobile or computer.but coinbase wallet is not safe it can be hacked easily so don't store bitcoins on coinbase mobile wallet.
Maybe in future more wallets for bitcoin will be created but now blockchain is safest in my point of view.

I'm using a mobile wallet app to cash out or to convert into our local fiat which is more convenient for that feature, however, I'm not using it to store a large number of bitcoins to the android phone as it is always connected to the internet plus malware, adware and viruses are
attached to some of the applications installed on the phone so the chance of getting your coins lost is high, my btc is in the safe haven of an offline cold storage device. so for me, it is not good to store your bitcoin on a mobile phone for a long time.

I can't really say its safe with phone, but at least there are security measures put in place to help safeguard your mobile wallet and other stuff.

The safest way to store bitcoin on a computer. But if you still want to use mobile phone to be able to perform various transactions easily and quickly then I suggest to use service that has 2fa, because with these features then you can get a much better security than services that do not have 2fa features.

Phone is as safe as your behavior is. There is an inherent problem with the fact that there might be some kind of flaw or backdoor access so bare this in mind. Best way is to keep most of your coins offline and only have on phone what you actually use. This way you should be safe even if something happens, damage is minimized.

There are a number of points in the OP.

Firstly, Bitcoin can't compete with credit cards because there is no credit facility with . It doesn't lend itself to competing with debit cards either. Will it have to compete with payment processors? I don't believe it will - payment processors can eist as service providers in the Bitcoin world. So what about mobile payments? Do you really want to trust a globalist organisation like Apple with your money, or a Rothschild owned bank for tht matter? The whole point of Bitcoin is to escape from their clutches.

I believe that the only safe wallet is a node based wallet, anything else is just another banking operation, with all the caveats associated with bank deposits. At the moment it isn't possible to run a node on a mobile, but no doubt it will be possible in the not too distant future. One thing you could try is to tether a mobile to a netbook to run a node. You could synchronise the netbook over WiFi to keep your data transfer costs to a minimum.

I think electrum is connected to blockchain only. So if you still have your private keys it will be easy to open them back and yes they have a mobile application and I am using one now.

Android phones are safe also because they are being infected with viruses, only the SD card can be infected and that is a good sign to avoid hacks.
So I say it is safer.

I already got a mobile application for bitcoin. However when we try to encash it. Some other user complain that there account has been hacked someone is try to claim there payout. So, I think a mobile bitcoin application or not it is still depend on how you handle your accounts and how you make it more safe.

I'm not sure if they are completely safe. Let's not forget that if bitcoin is going to be used by the masses, then it really needs to be secure, because people tend to make a bad use of their computer and mobile phone, and end up having problems with security, that will eventually lead to a hack. It's almost impossible to prevent that from happening, so I think that we will need some sort of dedicated and secure "payment instrument" so people can use bitcoin and other crypto. I think we will probably see a device that is similar to a phone, and has internet access etc, but it will only be used for crypto payments.

I agree, as an experience with different wallet, I am currently using an online wallet too. It is easier to use it to convert btc to fiat here in our country. But really it is actually having high fees. Like for every Fifty dollars cashed out in our fiat has fees of 2-3 dollars. And dollars have high equivalent in our country.
It's the same as banks just more handy in y opinion.

Well, if security is the questions, they are safe. Especially with private keys. The walet I use sometimes have bugs but still good wallet.
Unless you have given someone or any website about your wallet and keys.

We can't be completely sure of the safety of our cryptos using wallets. Even the safest ones encounter problems too. But the one thing we can do is to be vigilant at all times. We will be the ones to determine how safe are our very own cryptos through our practices in keeping them safe.

Mycelium started out as a great wallet on Android and the dev team has been working hard at integrating with other partners. They make it very easy to watch your balances and make deposits while requiring you to insert a physical device in order to spend. Plus, if you have Galaxy S6 or Note 5 or higher, you can download an app that will turn a hardened section of your phone into one of those hardware wallets that are compatible with Mycelium.

Yep, there have been some scam wallets slipped into the app stores lately. Use a real link from the developers website or Bitcoin.org.

I mean I guess obviously if you're making payments you can't have everything in cold storage so some compromises on security must be made.

These wallets are all solid choices that offer both security and usability:
Airbitz (iphone or Android)
Breadwallet (iPhone)
Mycelium (Android)
Copay (all devices)
Just make sure you follow the appropriate backup procedures for whatever wallet you choose.

So eventually bitcoin is gonna have to compete with credit cards and mobile payments. To do this people will need to have a bitcoin mobile app.

I know there are the lightweight wallet mobile apps. Are those any safe? Will those be the future. Or will the future be having a hosted service where the company has control over your bitcoin and you can just send them to pay with stuff with the mobile app? Like Square recent integration of Bitcoin.

i am using with phone so i would say it's safe. above all, all of us should be more secure.

No, not at all. Moving to a hardware wallet is the ultimate in security, though, and Mycelium has consistently been at the forefront in terms of cooperating with HW wallet makers. As you learn about hardware wallets, rest easy knowing that if/when you get to the point of feeling like you need one, Mycelium is already ready for it.

I'm using Mycelium and haven't got a hardware Wallet. Are you saying I will need one in the future to use Mycelium? If so, I will be moving away from it ASAP.

Bitcoin Wallet (Android, BlackBerry OS) is exactly designed for this usecase. It's safe, very user friendly and perfect for daily transactions.

The easiest and most secure wallet that's still friendly to use that I'd recommend is Airbitz. Your keys are fully under your control and they are always encrypted and auto backed up in case you lose your phone.

it depends on your secured account because there are also scams of bitcoin wallet sites but they make money for you but in popular and legitimate sites you are not robbers and I have your wallet secured that they are not robbers, and should you have 2authorization code to add to your wallet secured and your phone number should also save you to forget your password on your account.

Nobody is in total safety otherwise there would be no hackers in the world. Even tho the wallet app is installed on your phone, it still in danger. You must be careful from logging into suspicious sites that can steal your informations.
Using bitcoin or making any other payment via internet is risky, but, don't let that fear hold you from working hard to earn bitcoin.

Its safe, but have to take appropriate preventive measures before using Bitcoin's wallet via phone. I would like to go more deep as these security measures are vary according to service provider. Holding Bitcoin will parallel wallets such as Blockchain coinbase and xapo gives facility to operate with any platform as desktop as well as app wallets. Using 2FA is must to access such wallets online via apps or web.

Keeping wallet back up safe along with private keys of your own wallet is also very important while taking preventive measures for keeping Bitcoins secure within your wallet.

well wallets like coinomi and mycelium are pretty safe because they don't control your wallet like mycelium that is connected to the bitcoin network directly and don't need an email address to access your wallet all you need is passphrase to recover your wallet in case you don't remember your password unlike coinbase that needs an email in order to sign in although 2fa is needed now in exchanges like coinbase but overall you safer in mobile.

I can highly recommend Samouraiwallet. In my opinion it is by far the
most secure and the best mobile wallet.

https://samouraiwallet.com

Two quotes from the founders:
Quote
We are privacy activists who have dedicated our lives to creating the
software that Silicon Valley will never build, the regulators will never allow,
and the VC's will never invest in. We build the software that Bitcoin deserves.

Quote
A modern bitcoin wallet hand forged to keep your transactions private, your identity masked, and your funds secure.

Currently Samouraiwallet is only available for Android. However, I would recommend using
an Android phone for Bitcoin-related dealings anyway. Apple phones may have a more beautiful design,
but the Android system is better in terms of security.

Mobile wallets and payment services will have their own way with security because they believe the phone will always be in user ownership. Therefore, it will not have a similar system and instead rely on other security measures like a 6-digit pin. While this is not entirely safe and easy to solve, then its service is the responsibility of the provider to set up enough security to protect user money if the phone is lost.

Wallets are not service providers so that they can control over your Bitcoin. Wallets are designed for Bitcoin users to store their Bitcoins.
There are many mobile wallets in the appstore and playstore where you can download the Bitcoin wallets from but be sure that the wallet you download is safe, secure and has the ability to support the future forks of Bitcoin. There are good wallets such as Mycelium and Electrum which have been performing well and supports most of the genuine forks.

Currently, I use an online wallet that also have a bitcoin exchange feature in it and also have an android/IOS version. It is originally just a payment app for billing and other business transactions. This wallet I used is secured are trusted by millions of people in our country.

If you are using Trezor hardware wallet then I don't think there is any issue even if there is a virus on your mobile device. However, when it comes to the use of web wallet's mobile version then it's as risky as using web wallets because of extreme secure environment, your database (of private keys) is still at risk on the server side hence it is recommended to maintain less than 5% to 10% of your overall funds to avoid huge loss in case of any accident/incident.

We cannot say all wallets are safe in every time..

It based on the wallet.I think it is not a safe to holding more bitcoin into mobile.. because every applications will not avert from virus.. Some applications may cause some virus and your mobile may affect of them..I also agree some wallets are cozy to use and it prevent from online problems such as blockchain and so..

Android is safe to causing this problem..If you had android phone just you can hold some bitcoins only..But the most safest way to holding a bitcoin is the computer..because the system has antivirus format so we can clear it to anytime..

Clearly, when we talk about bitcoin(not just about bitcoin but also every other crypto currencies out there), we can say that it is both completely safe and very unsafe at the same time. Just think of it as another possession - if you do not know how to take care of it, it will be broken, or if you do not know how to keep it safe, you can really lose it and vice versa.

So it would be logical to only transfer just enough bitcoins and a little extra on a mobile wallet. Rather than trust all of your possessions in the hands of other people. Because there will always be exploitable flaws in any security.

Hope this helps clear thing out for ya, good day.

Bitcoin wallets in phone is not very safe but the security level has been increased over the past years.Like they added 2-factor authentication so you need verification code to authenticate the transaction,so mobile wallets like blockchain is completely safe for storing small amount of bitcoins.I think coinbase wallet is not safe because many users reporting that unauthorized transaction happened in recent days so it is better to use blockchain wallet in mobile then your bitcoins are safe.

I am sure with the current advances in the web app and mobile app development it is completely secured to use these kind of apps. Im not technical guy but as far as I use the app like coinable, electrum etc they seems to be very easy to use for my daily needs. I mean can easily secure them with the password and plus I have added security of the mobile phone password itself. With that calculation we will have two to three security check to reach the money that we are storing in the app itself. However, there could be concerns regarding the use of it when we reach in the real market with increased use of the currency. The more the use the more connected we are and we might just get exposed to vulnerabilities. For now everything looks traditional and we might need upgrade in the future.

No mobile wallet came with 100% safety. All gazettes have their own advantages and disadvantages, We have to take care of our wallet and protect them from hackers. Hackers are always active. Always use bitcoin authorised mobile wallets. Do update your mobile`s firmware from time to time. Do install genuine antivirus and keep the spam protection on all the time.  Do not click on any new link or open an unknown email. These email or links can be a trap from wallet hackers. Do not store your private key in your mobile. If you follow these security measures you will minimise the risk of getting hacked and your bitcoins will remain safe.

I have a doubt if bitcoin safe by using cellphone. Just make a security pin so that no one can use your cellphone. And sometimes a virus in the so that all the files can be deleted. But some other say that is secured. Its not just that safe but its more convenient and its very helpful. We should trust bitcoin.

I don't know what options are out there now. But it would seem to me that having a secure offline savings account coupled with a hosted mobile bitcoin service (checking account) for payments would make sense. I mean I guess obviously if you're making payments you can't have everything in cold storage so some compromises on security must be made.

It not really depends of the phone but the network you getting internet from, let's say you'r at the mall using public connection, there you have high risk of getting hacked by someone.

I myself always use telepone to open this site. I think for the security depends on the phone users, because i myself always lock my phone so it can't be used by others. But there is a serious problem when using the phone that is when we accidentally connect with different wifi and both use bitcoin and we enter through the same IP, then can make one of our account is banned. So for telpone users i suggest to be careful when using wifi.

Till now I have a old android phone so I don't use blockchain wallet on him , because android phone have weak security system and get last update 2 year ago. Before 2 month I get new iPhone so I was thinking to having blockchain wallet on it because iOS have more often security updates. But then ,there is still risk to getting malware by downloading application from store or even worst someone stole your phone and you forget to activate 2-factor authentication. So I think I won't have wallet on my phone.

In our time, nowhere to feel safe. Hackers can penetrate everywhere. Therefore it is impossible to keep the coins in one place. No matter be it a smartphone or a computer. I don't trust smartphones. We are constantly setting there app and no one knows what hidden features this app may have. We can provide the hacker the ability to access our money.

I really think that bitcoin is safe with or without internet. As long as you have access to your private keys then nobody can really touch your wallet which also comes with 2FA protection. In todays world everyone carries mobile banking application and they are also secured enough and we are using them daily basis. Then I don’t think there should be any question risen for the security of bitcoin for whom the very first principle was to open up the secured trisection portal and which we have it.

To be frank, there is problem with security only if we humans are carless about it. If keep our phones without password or do not take proper safety measures then how do you think that it will keep up the security and safety of your wallet. The first security steps starts from us not from he app itself. I think the complex measures that has given us today are sufficient to keep everything locked away.

for me the term safe also are may not been pointing out just like using phone for me it cant be say that it was been a safe for even you know the security of it but the way on how we can say safe is not been telling that even you hold all the security of it.

Your bitcoin's safety all depends on you. If you are to store your investment in your phone, you should encrypt it, I believe most of the smartphone today have this option and there are apps as well. It is recommit is recommended to use multiple wallets; first is for sending bitcoins to, second is for receiving and third is for storing like in a vault (Offline/Cold wallet). Always check the URL of the sites you are going because phishing sites are lurking out there.

The only truly secure way to use bitcoin with most Android phones is Mycelium using Trezor with an OTG cable. Bread wallet for iPhone. I also like Samourai for Android, interesting features but I would not store a lot on it until they support Trezor.

It could be not the best idea, becouse you use unsafe connection everyday, connecting to the wi-fi in public places. I'm also not sure that mobile operator grants you complete safety, so anyone can steal your data.

It's safe to log in wifi free, not to the black web because there are many viruses, not click on the link unknown source because you may be eating malicious code into the phone  causing data loss. , stolen  Smiley

I think connecting in some free wifi leads to malwares. I read some artcile in the intermet that says, sometimes free wifi's are malwares and connecting to them is dangerous. Thats why it is still safe to connect in secured wifi (if you know the password) or on your personal wifi's than connecting to those wifi you can see everywhere.  Also dont just click websites or links that you can see in internet. Some of them are phising sites whcih may stole your accounts. Think before you click.

Unless you have a back-up wallet, phones are not really advisable in keeping your coins. Backing up your wallet into other devices is possible, so just be ready in case you lose your phone.

I don't find Bitcoin wallets intended for phones very secure when you compare them to desktop wallets. That's not because the ARM architecture is less secure than for example those used in PCs but because the way people use phones. Phones are nowadays used as portable computers that get connected everywhere to the internet, the combination of a wireless network adapter including their portable aspect makes them really vulnerable. Now you're thinking what's the difference with an online banking app on your phone? Well, the difference is that banks control how you're money flows so they have taken all sorts of safety measures to ensure that you're money can't get stolen easily. For instance, limit the amount you can send a day, ask for extra verification when making transactions to new recipients and also have insurance for these things. Online wallets can offer these safety measures too but I don't feel the same safety when using these, especially when the wallet company isn't registered.

It actually depends, I think if you know well how to secure your btc wallet, and bitcoin on your phone actually has some vulnerabilities, instances where a hacker can easily detect addresses through phones, since a smart phone is not that smart, thats why be EXTRA CAREFUL when utilising phones as bitcoinvesting.

Completely depending upon your phone, with no backup? Yes its pretty unsafe as you are facing. Taking up backup is really important. But if you are using web wallet like coinbase, I think you can regain access, but like Coinomi etc, without backup, no way.
Now if some one asks about the safety related to transaction, I think its enough safe, as per your security you run on your device.

I think saving offline bitcoin on the mobile does not yet exist, if it already exists. It would be helpful to Transact

I guess its safe depending on how are you getting your connection in able to open your bitcoin. Personally I manage ny bitcoin mostly thru my phone and I just make sure that I don’t connect to public wifi when I am opening my account. Also, I don’t left my account logged on my cellphone for additional security since people other people might use or stole it.

Bitcoin is the most secure cryptocurrency in the world and also the most popular, means that bitcoin is safe in every situation (phone, laptops, ipads). Bitcoin doesn’t depend on these things it only depends on the intelligence of the person who invest.

Just as safe as using computer. Computer and Mobile phone only differ on their functions and the availability of using it. For example for computer, we know that computer can only be use on a specific place like computer shops or even in your home if you have one unlike for mobile phone you can use it in a different places, the only risk of using mobile is that it might get snatched by people easily than compute the same also with computer but it is hard a liitle. Thus, using bitcoin on phone and computer are both safe the risk of getting steal is pretty much higher when using mobile phone.

The safest way to store bitcoin on a computer. But if you still want to use mobile phone to be able to perform various transactions easily and quickly then I suggest to use service that has 2fa, because with these features then you can get a much better security than services that do not have 2fa features.
I also think that Bitcoin should be used in the Computer but not in a mobile phone. Bitcoin is much valuable and day by day it's becoming a profitable platform that's why all sort of information should be maintained properly. I think the computer or mobile phone doesn't matter, it's a matter of security.

I knew a person who has lost around 100 Bitcoin by crashing of its hard disk. so information should be reserved and properly maintained. that's why the mobile phone is not as much as secure than the computer.

These apps have securuty keys and phrases and also utilizes 2fa so it is safe to use on mobile. It really.depends on the.user if he's going to be careless about it. If you practice safety and security, then you don't have to worry

You just  to be extra careful in all transactions you are doing.Make sure that your private keys are secured by not allowing other people to use your android phones since there are big amounts of profit being kept in your own wallet.

I don't know what options are out there now. But it would seem to me that having a secure offline savings account coupled with a hosted mobile bitcoin service (checking account) for payments would make sense. I mean I guess obviously if you're making payments you can't have everything in cold storage so some compromises on security must be made.

It is safe as using trezor or any other wallet, the only difference is that you can brig your wallet every where yet the security of your wallet is the same. Just make sure that you have a back up records for you wallet, like the password and the email you are using to access the wallet.

I think it is pretty save but you have to be careful with transactions. There are already some apps where you can use your phone to buy coins or sell them and where you can use google authentication for safety. I think that in the future there will be a lot more people who will use their phone for bitcoin.

I can't find it now, but I have read a bitcointalk thread created by the user, who lost his bitcoin in the online wallet because his phone was hacked. He used the phone for 2FA and he had also the relevant wallet webpage address stored in the phone as well. The hackers only needed access his phone and they had access to both: the webpage and the 2FA text message.

Please observe, that if you have your wallet app on the phone and you use THE SAME phone for 2FA, it makes you vulnerable to the similar attack that happened to this other user.

I strongly advice using some other device for 2FA

I think it is safe with phone cause my friends is using their phones to connect with the sites and to earn BTC.
Yeah youre right most of the people now used mobile phone for their connection which capable for us to bring it  wherever we want to go.But just reminded always that we should take good care of our mobile phone especially for the hacker. But even if our phone where hack but the security of Btc wallet was surely safe.

I feel 2FA are safer than just saving a private key itself. 2FA gives a second barrier of protection and user will need a password and 2FA verification to get into an account. Now the only issue is that phones are easier to get lost than desktop/laptop  Cry

But currently cryptocurrencies are not so mobile friendly but maybe soon we can see a change on that.

You know, your friend using it is hardly the argument that it is safe. People rarely behave rationally and almost never securely.

It is anybody's own decision. But as I said in my earlier post, as a minimum I recommend using a separate device for 2FA (in case your phone gets hacked) and ideally I would use a hardware wallet to serve as a wallet-on-a-go, it is as portable as a phone and much more secure.

It is safe to use hard wallet to your phone,bt for that you have to use a high qualification phone that can maintain this wallet....If you can do this ,BTC is safe to use with your phone.

Well we should remember that we often loose our phones and they can be cracked, so it's not a good idea. Only if you are completely sure of mobile data security.
