With $500 I think Ripple would be a good pick, Eidoo is also a good token with great project behind it. You can also buy 2 ETHs. I think these cryptos are worth investing.

You can invest your money in potential coins like Ethereum, Litecoin as these coins can give you good amount of profits both in short term and long term. Ethereum currently holds a market capital of $23 billion and with one of the best development teams behind it, can cross the $700 mark by the end of 2018. Similarly, Litecoin is considered as the silver to bitcoin's gold and has shown great stability over the last 4 years. Also, since adoption by Coinbase the coin has seen a jump in its profit gains and is a good coin to invest in.

I would invest on learning (trade small). Or using leverage on some exchanges which allow USD pairs.
I am not professional and not doing this as a passion or living (i wish), but 500$ can be 1000$ on Kraken for example, with 2x leverage... and 1% can mean 10$ profit (minus exchange fees) if ur hitting the right jackpot on market turns (upwards/downwards), with all proper stop loss triggers in place each time.
I myself don't invest in anything right now. I was too much bothered by the market, as of right now i sit on the sidelines waiting for myself to settle as well as the market, too.

Personally, I prefer to distribute my investments for the purchase of promising coins. Approximately in equal shares I would allocate my investments for the purchase of Bitcoin, Ethereum, NEO, Ripple and Waves, from next year the market should begin its recovery.
