seems right now even "mining" cards are 95% stock video cards, just with no display connectors. everything else is the same except maybe the bios.

i wonder how far a REAL mining card could be stripped down if it didnt need to conform to the pcie spec physically and electrically.  only needs a 1x pcie connector, a few pcie power connectors, a GPU, memory and few glue chips and thats it. so it could be much less expensive, fit into smaller (non standard mining only) cases, reach higher rates (tweaked memory and timings and controllers, say 512 bits wide or something [if that can be done i gather memory bus is baked into the gpu, but maybe bank switching or something can be done]). twice the compute power in half the space. would be sweet.

just need someone to step up and order bare gpu dies and go to town.

steal posts much?

Bitmain and its goons have been dropping bombs after bombs and they do not look tired at all, i guess what is next to their schedule, as far as I can tell by inside sources, they are researching on how to crack/take advantage of proof of stake chains already, amazing hehe, they are going for the kill and that is all because coin developers allow them to do it hehe

Either way that still doesn't mean GPU mining will die.

Pretty sure people will continue to mine as long as you can pull coins out of thin air with your GPU.

As for building a $5k rig and paying it off in a couple months, that is gone.

But all this means is that crypto is taking off and everyone wants in.

It died in 2014 then resurrected in 2015, the way things are, unless other coin developers follow monero developers then it will cause what determines if gpu mining will die or not in the end is profitability like in 2014, right now unlike in 2014, there is still a light shining in the end of the tunnel, whether or not this light will keep shining, depends entirely on actions of coin developers.

I heard that mining will die in 2016, then that it will die in 2017. Now I hear about 2018. Mining at the GPU is working and working.

If you could basically think of it, yeah, It might die, however turn of events could not be easily predicted, like coin developers decisions

ASIC and FPGA, they already exists a long time ago, its like a war of improvements

Lets see how it goes, same with coins

oh btw, seen some AI mining for gpu's  Smiley

why is chinese so dominating huh ?? from global games to crypto, they seem to be the benchmark for all the major products.
Is it because they have a lot of players Huh

Cultural differences. NA and EU investors that I have met are pretty risk adverse when it comes to mining hardware. The mentality of a chinese investor would make them more likely to drop the money and take the risk on the hardware. Once GMO starts building their 7nm asic that will change, the new dominant player will be japanese, not chinese.

I'm eager to see the price of Vega 20, I'm expecting a 100% computing power improvement (proto seems to show 70% according to the "leaked benchmark"), less power draw (150w says the rumor) + AI native instructions. Just hope it won't be overpriced...

I think gpu mining will not die in the near future. not only there will  be new mineable coins in the future, but there are also many up-and-coming projects that will offer new ways of earning compensation for gpu computation. so I think we will not find it as dead in 2018.

"User 'Laviborz' is a newbie, but your options are set such that you cannot receive PMs from newbies. Therefore, you cannot send PMs to newbies, either."

That is what it says when I tried to send you a PM.

Indeed if we compare the gpu vs asic miner, they are really different for the hashrate and speed mining, and that's what will make mining using gpu will die.
But if we look at coins that can mining, we will know that not all coins can be mined by asic, from that I think that mining gpu will always alive.

Hello! I do not think so. It seems to me that the GPU will be relevant for a long time. Coins similar to Ethereum will remain.

I see day by day, ASICS of many coins are launching, individually or multiple. Chinese companies are trying to kill the GPU mining market once again cause they are greedy, just like they did to Bitcoin and Litecoin. GPU Mining died in 2013 and was resurrected in 2015 with the Cryptocoins Generation 2.0, although many of you miners just started mining on 2016 due to huge pumps on those 2.0 cryptocoins.

As Cryptocoins got more popular than in 2011 - 2013. The new generation of Cryptocoins 2015 and afterwards are endangered by ASICS once again, and 2018 looks to be the year of per the title "GPU mining will die in 2018!".

Keep in mind that there are possible ASICS for ethash already for Q1, and even if ETH goes POS, ETC and other ethash coins will be only ASICS and if that happens only Equihash coins will be minable for a time and I have a word that there is already an ASIC in development for Equihash already and will start delivering in Q4 2018. As GPU mining keep gets scarce, other popular coins will have pumps and so ASICS will be born for them.

I want to know your thoughts about it and I wonder the limits of --> "where, there is money to be made, there is greedy"

Keep in mind that this price crashing we are seeing is due also to the fear of ASICS for most GPU mining coins.
Yes it true according to recent coins adopte GPU mining and failed like bitcoin gold with famous 1 vote sys . even big farms working on POW going to disappear soon because of POS mining is safe ,secure and not consuming high power as usual people always search for easy way .

I think the people contributing to this thread as of late who speak proper English are few and far between.  I almost feel that way about this entire forum.  Tired of decoding the bullshit.

Still making my truck payment here with my GPU's.

Not shabby.

Though my equip was paid off long ago.

Can not imagine buying in 6 months ago building a rig and being buried completely with GPU prices.

Ride er out til she dies.

Not six months ago, but I built my gpu farm in November 2017.  Not the best of times to buy gpu's, but not the worst either.  Haven't sold a single thing for fiat.  I don't really plan to for a few years at least.  I mine, trade for btc when the mined-alt/btc value is good, and I'm still on par for what I expected.  Don't build a gpu farm on credit, have funds to pay your electricity costs out of your other pocket, learn when to trade your mined alts for btc, and don't be an idiot.  I don't care what my fiat value is or if I can make a car payment with my crypto mining profits, I care how much btc I can get in 1, 3, 6, 12. 18, 24, 36, 48 months with the hardware that I have.  That is all.
