Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Yeah, that's where I found it. I'm new to mining and stuff and the documentation is a bit "esoteric"  Is it important to have the testnet ports open in my firewall and what is the testnet for? I'd like to have all non essential ports battened down for safety. |

You don't need the testnet ports open, only the P2P port. If you're using 1.4, the in-wallet mining controls are in the options window, just choose your level of desired worship and let it run!
