Dark Wallet Certification proposal:

Ref: Let There Be Dark!

Greetings from Bitcoin Singapore!

Hive will be attending unSYSTEM's DarkWallet meeting in Milan on the week of the 24th. We propose that the outcome of this meeting be, at minimum, the establishment of a v1 "Dark Wallet Certification", a set of best-practice guidelines for wallets focused on decentralization and anonymity.

This topic is has been opened in order to get the community thinking about what exactly a "Dark Wallet" should be: We assume the use of Tor, CoinJoin, CoinSwap and other such developments. We assume the lack of centralized services wherever possible. We presume that we can evolve ideas about authentication (see the work of John Light, Joe Casico etc)... Still, our ignorance is vast and we would like to come armed at this meeting, with your feedback.

What ideas or thoughts do you all have?

We are extremely pleased to announce the acquisition of Jan Vornberger's Bridgewalker wallet for Android. We are also extremely pleased to announce that Jan will be joining the Hive team. Hive for Android will be available in late spring, 2014.

Wendell:

Quote
Jan is an absolute legend in the community. Many will recall his early successes, including InstaWallet and Bitcoin Monitor. We could not be more excited to have him on board. Together we will build an extremely user-friendly Android wallet and extend our app platform into the mobile space.

Jan:

Quote
I am excited about the acquisition of Bridgewalker by Hive and am looking very much forward to joining the Hive team. I will be focusing foremost on bringing the Hive experience to the Android platform. Nevertheless, Bridgewalker will continue operating and I am excited about exploring this approach further with the help of the Hive team!

Hive for Android's public repo will open in early January.

Hot on the heels of our acquisition of Jan Vornberger's Bridgewalker wallet for Android, we are today pleased to announce today the acquisition of Taylor Gerring's PAYTHRU.to, a service that allows users to easily send Bitcoin via SMS, Twitter, and Facebook. Taylor has also joined the Hive team and will be furthering our social network and services integrations for all platforms. As with all of our products, PAYTHRU.to will be open-sourced and made available for community collaboration.

Taylor:

Quote
I'm thrilled to be joining the Hive team and integrating PAYTHRU notifications with the Hive experience. In the near future, the code behind PAYTHRU will be open-sourced, allowing other developers to extend the platform to even more services, reaching more users. Looking forward, I'm exciting to work on making Hive the absolute best Bitcoin wallet in the world.

Wendell:

Quote
When we first met Taylor and saw what he was doing with PAYTHRU, we knew it was a match sanctioned by unspeakable entities in heavens both above and below. As such we could not be happier to have him join our team, and we look forward to rabbles being roused in some grand old style.

PAYTHRU.to's public repo will open in early January.

Acquiring a lot of things in this community, do you guys have funding? Can you point us to the VC firm that gave you this funding? Or are you just giving stock in your company in which case where is your LLC registered out of?

Hi gweedo,

Right now we are self-funded, but we hope to make some related announcements soon. As for the other details, those will be trumpeted out along with such news. Apologies for any vagueness, but there's a little sensitivity around the subject until it's all signed, sealed and delivered. Hope you understand.

Yeah I wasn't expecting a straight answer, but sounds good, of course I be on the look out.

We have another release for you today, version 2013112501:

  • added Finnish, Greek, Portuguese (European and Brazilian), Romanian and Turkish translations
  • switched to a more robust SQLite format for the database file instead of the old XML one
  • the balance field on the profile page will now show pending balance if some of the funds are blocked
  • error handling improvements - more errors should be caught, and you have an option of submitting error reports to us (uses HockeyApp API)
  • fixed issues with disappearing transactions (missing transactions should be restored now)
  • fixed a problem with BTC amount precision

Because of the database file change, it's recommended to back up your Hive directory before updating. Just make a copy of the ~/Library/Application Support/Hive directory in some other place.

Also, we've got another Cocoa developer on board (hi Nikolaj!), so you can expect the releases to speed up a bit now Smiley Nikolaj currently works on currency conversion feature that will show you the amount you're sending converted to a chosen fiat currency.

We had reset this poll a couple of times, but it seems that everyone unanimously wants an iOS version. It's the one thing that we unfortunately cannot promise due to Apple's shakiness re: Bitcoin, as mentioned in the first post. But, we will see. :-)

We've implemented the currency conversion feature I've mentioned above - this is how it looks (you can enter the amount in any of the fields, and the other will be updated automatically):

You can also see your total wallet balance converted to a fiat currency on the profile page.

It's way more than that and (soon?) available for both Chrome and Firefox, but you have the general idea.

We've got a new version available for you today!

Here's a list of changes:

  • currency conversion - you can now see the amount in your chosen fiat currency in the send dialog and on the balance page
  • fixed issue with incorrect decimal symbol when entering sent amount
  • transaction fee is now displayed in the send window (and the fee is added to instead of subtracted from the amount)
  • added Japanese and Serbian (Cyrillic and Latin) translations
  • UI updates in Sean's Outpost app
  • improved error handling during startup

And here's how the send dialog looks now with currency conversion and the fee amount:
