MrTeal, et al...
Great job!!
I have additional chips arriving in November. Will you still be selling the boards then? I would love to get more boards!

It says custom code. Does it still use the same protocol over a virtual serial port to be compatible with the same mining clients that support BFL's products?
What about Z-Link, how is that exposed over the protocol?

Hi DrHaribo, it currently uses the same protocol as BFL and uses the FTDI VCM drivers (or the WinUSB ones for cgminer). We're looking at ways to extend the protocol to allow the extra features / reporting available on the Chili to be exposed through the mining software. Z-Link isn't yet. I'll let Chip Geek explain that better.

Great job much cheaper than current alternatives. What hash rate have you been able to push all 8 chips to?

The protocol is the same as BFL's protocol except for X-link vs. Z-link. As MrTeal stated, Z-link firmware is not fully functional yet but the plan is for it to be completely invisible to any mining software. In other words, there is no "@XY" stuff to address a specific board. To the mining software, it will simply appear as a single mining unit with N x 30GH/s hashing power where N = number of boards. Note that I'm struggling with the best way to indicate individual board (and CHIP!) temperatures as I'm reporting an average right now. It would seem it would be best to extend / modify the protocol to support individual chip temperature reporting. The other obvious potential problem is: Will any mining software complain if the processor list in the ZCX command is longer than 16? Or engines is more than 256? We can always abandon Z-link if it turns out to be a bad idea. The incremental cost for the hardware is quite small. I will follow up with PMs later to keep this thread clean from this topic for now. (But right now, I have some more code to finish up... )

It should probably work with my mining client without modifications then. Thanks for the information.

In my client's GUI I show the highest of the two temperatures reported by BFL devices. Maybe you should do the same, using the highest value instead of average. This way, if one chip gets very hot that won't be hidden in a slightly higher average.

good idea i was wondering why my 3 bfl devices only showed the one highest temp on the top part of bfgminer but shows all the temps next to the BFL0 BFL1 BFL2 devices

If someone else wants to buy (8n + 4) chips from me then I will happily sell you the extra 4, but otherwise I obviously can't split boards down. I will let you know if that happens. GL!

I have been thinking about using PCI cages to mount the boards instead of PC cases. I could also use rack mounted cases. These support 6 boards each and should be pretty easy to mount in a mining configuration. Any comments? http://www.neutronusa.com/prod.cfm/502627

Any comments? http://www.neutronusa.com/prod.cfm/502627It looks to me like that wouldn't leave anywhere near enough space for the coolers from the looks of it. Maybe you'd fit ~3 in there if you're lucky, not sure as I don't know the final height. Had you considered that? I think even with the (much more expensive) GPU coolers you still wouldn't be able to put one in each slot... I am currently thinking a large block of wood and saw, and just cut a bunch of slots in it. Not too pretty but should work OK I think *shrugs*
