The US government closed down a few days ago, in order to save money or something.  I'm not a big fan of politics, but I know some people are, so what are your thoughts about this?

Republicans are afraid Obama Care may be a good thing so they shutdown everything because they want something too.

Quote
“We’re not going to be disrespected,” conservative Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., [told the Washington Examiner]. “We have to get something out of this. And I don’t know what that even is.”

I actually find this quit funny, supposedly USA is the world's most powerful and rich country in the world. And the government need to closed down to save money.  Cheesy

They didn't do it to save money.  Slightly less than 50% of the country doesn't want poor people to have health care, so they shut the government down to try and stop it.  Surprisingly, there are a lot of poor people in that group.  I'll never understand it.

The whole thing is, frankly, bloody stupid.

Like it or not, the ACA was signed into law and deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court. Stripping over 800,000 people of their jobs because you don't agree with it is dirty politics at best...and I'd hardly give the least-productive Congress in history the benefit of the doubt.

The worst part about it? Due to blatant, unchecked gerrymandering practices, those responsible for this debacle will likely continue to be re-elected despite their obvious employment of brinkmanship tactics to get what they want. So with the next big political posturing circlejerk just over two weeks away (not that it should even be an enormous affair in the first place, but I digress) I'm extremely concerned about what will happen next.

Almost makes me regret leaving Canada for this mess. Maybe Californians will come to their senses and vote to secede from the US before it's too late.

Good idea!

A parabola (plural parabolas or parabolae, adjective parabolic, from Greek: παραβoλή) is a two-dimensional, mirror-symmetrical curve.  y = x2

If your local McDonalds closed the women's bathroom...would you say that McDonalds is shut down?

Less than 15% of the federal government is shut down.

Worst shutdown ever.

If you worked at McDonalds and got furloughed you'd say they got shutdown.  Are you saying that just because you're not affected you don't care at all?  That 15% is still a huge amount of people that are affected.

Yep that 15% is significant know some people who work in the government and they are now on a mandatory strike in essence.
No wages no income just waiting on the government to bring their jobs back.

Hopefully a bunch of people are keeping track of exactly what's getting shut down and what isn't. The big picture as I see it is that 1) some non-essential parts or subparts of government like the FCC are shut down passively 2) some non-essential parts of government like public land and memorials are actively, unnecessarily shut down BY PAYING MORE MONEY (for men with guns, barricades, moving equipment rental, etc) 3) parts of the government necessary to preserve life and property like federal civilian firefighters and nationwide kidnapping trackers (kidnapping is often across state lines, and a federal offense investigated by the FBI) are unpaid and shut down, respectively.

Anyone who admits to 2 and 3 should be unsurprised when people call for the abolition of government and replacement of it with private enterprise.

Saying that you don't trust someone because of their behavior is completely valid.

NASA has actually produced results and technology. FEMA just produces jobs for Federal contracters.

Don't forget NOAA, EPA, and NSF.  All the discretionary funding is some of the most important money we spend.  And it's the most vulnerable.  Who knows why?  Oh I know it's because people like you don't think it affects you if our science research comes to a screeching halt.
