Isn't it so unfair for the people who is new here? That will be struggling making such as good quality post so they could be given a merit by someone. I know all of you is having a hard time thinking what are you going to post such as good quality.

It is really hard to have a merit it is because as far as I know:
People are selfish. Even though you post a really good quality post still there is a people who won't give you a merit.
Some are alone. Like me, I don't really have much friend who would give me a free merit. I know that it is easy to have a merit with a friend that have an account of bitcointalk.

My question is. Why still need merit? We are still struggling to rank because of the merit.
I agree. Even for those people who are already here for a long time, it is so difficult to rank up since merit is now a requirement. There are too many people here so the possibilities that you will gain a merit is so little. Merit can be considered as a good thing for some reasons but still it is very unfair because gaining one is so hard which makes it impossible already to rank up to gain more profit.

Yes! It is totally unfair. Those who joined last year became legendary members without the real effort and those who joined recently can't come even close to that rank. Merit system favorites the old members. If a newbie wants to reach legendary status he must comment for years and all his posts have to be amazing! Merit system is nonsense now, it should have been introduced from day 1.

I'm not entirely happy with the Merit system - I was just about to become a senior member, and won't now. However, the fact the system favours older members is surely the point? They're the people who have supported Bitcoin through it's development, not the Johnny-come-latelys who joined in November because they heard it was a get rich quick scheme.

It is actually fair enough. It is also a way to reduce sh*t posters in this forum. I myself have been stucked in my rank, my rank up will depend on the quality of posts I make. I used to disagree with merit to because of course it is a disadvantage for everyone but I learned to accept it since it's already there. MODs will still be followed.

As a Jr. Member, it is really very difficult now to advance in Rank status.  This is because of the merit system. Regardless of how many post you have, you need to gain certain merit to qualify for a particular rank and this merit will be coming from members of this group. Most of the time, people don't care providing merits to anyone. But it does help to maintain quality posted rather than junk. It has it's positive and same as for negatives.

First of all this topic should be in the Meta section (reported). Merit is fair, I say it is, not because I am already Legendary status, its because it will bring fairness to those who just post to uprank and join campaigns and those who makes quality posts. Would you allow someone who posts a single liner with no substance at all to rank up together with you who try to make it a point to make a good post that is worthy of receiving a merit?

Merit isn't really unfair it is just made for the spammer and for the other people to make a quality or informative post ,
They just want to clean the forum because there are too much users already and a lot of spammers and alternative accounts.

Thats right. Merit does actually help the forum to be clean and spam free by account farmers although some people mistaken it to be a disadvantage because they cannot now posibly ranked up as fast as possible as what they'v been expected to be ever since the merrit system was not yet invented before. You know , most of the users here only wants to rank up as fast as possible in order to achieve a bigger pay check whenever they join a campaign.

Some are alone. Like me, I don't really have much friend who would give me a free merit. I know that it is easy to have a merit with a friend that have an account of bitcointalk.
Being alone has nothing to do why you can't receive any Merits. What do you think of me? I already got 40 Merits and do you think that I get it from my friends? Well, its NO. I have no friends to give me Merits and if there are, I will not doing to ask them for Merit.

With just diligence + effort + knowledge. You will be rewarded.

As you can see, you don't need to have friends just to get Merits, in order to get one (or even more), you just need to improve your posts and make it more valuable, make it constructive until it become a "Good Quality Posts". This is where other members will be interested to your posts and your posts will have a higher chance of possibility to be Merited. See? There's no need for friends, you will only end up abusing Merits if you were caught asking/begging Merits to people you knew. You will only receive a reward of Negative trust if you do so.

Come one buddy, It's really hard to earn Merits but with a little hard work, it's not impossible for you to achieve your desired rank. Just like nullius, iasenko athan (I forgot the name) and other Members who ranked up because of making Good Posts.

But I do agree to the part where, Merit really is so unfair.
Sir theymos stated that
While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

but this is usually what happens. People give away their Merits for just something that they agreed.
For example:

(No offense to the owner of the post which is Mr. *******. I just used it as an example)
Can you imagine it? Are these examples really need to be Merited? Wake up guys.
These posts doesn't deserve any Merit but because of some people agreed with it, it received Merits. While there are lot of Good Quality Post out there seeking for Merit but what? They can't even receive one. Unfair isn't?

That's why I agreed that Merit is a little unfair, usually to those members whose posts are always being ignored by other Members.

My opinion is merit is only used and discovered for good purposes but the point are very to be a member many fake users will be deleted by this forum this will not be need in future and it will be enough in shorter periods.
It's not against the forum rules having alt accounts. The real problem is spammers and shitposters that will result useless threads and waste of time from admins or mods to erase spam post by spammers rather than managing something important for bitcointalk forum.

I think merit system is a good one in principle. But I have noticed that in some threads there are trolls and spammers, who use vulgar and offensive speech towards other participants.

They insult everyone who dares to have a different viewpoint than they express. So there is no true discussion possible, as they dominate on the thread and every normal person just quits participating, since it is not possible due to that kind of ongoing trolling.

What makes me wonder is that they have very high merit. How is that possible? Do they give merit to each other??

Anyway, I think it would be necessary, that the forum had better control about annoying behavior of some persons.
This control is needed to compliment the merit system.
Would it be possible, admins?

BTalk is a community, not someone's lawn
You are missing a point. Bitcointalk forum's community actually need as strict rules as possible to build up its barriers on scammers, spammers, merit farmers, account farmers, and - of course - abusers.
Without strict rules, the forum looks like a landfill, which is a perfect place for shit-posters to dump their shits.
Honestly, thanks Theymos for launching merit system.

Yes i think its so unfair, like now if you have a quality pos llthat posted in one of this forum ,many high ranks still didnt give merit,so i think why we need this merit system if only 10 merits couldnt reach.

OMG, how do you function in life?

You should know that the only reason the merit system was implemented was because shitposters like yourself want to come here and rank up--and it's usually multiple accounts--so they can earn money shitposting for bounties that don't have any sort of quality control.  Or they want a budding career in account farming.  What you wrote is just an immature opinion based on an incomplete grasp of the facts.

The merit system didn't need to be put in place from the start, because the shitposting problem didn't exist when bitcointalk started.  Hopefully that sinks into your cranium.

Bro I feel you Smiley But just do not give up. Of course I hope to hit one more rank soon but definitely is not an easy task for me due to merit.

I don't think so merit system is unfair. Ofcours need merit to avoid shitpost and spamming. But I am agree that normally some one don't want to give merit. Because he don't have any benifite to five you merit. That's why I think if there empliment on merit system it will better for new member's.  Example if some one give me 5 merit or other 5 people, on the other hand he will get back 1 merit return as bonus from forum. So every one will interest to give merit on quality post.

Are you trying to say that you will pay one merit for 5 awarded to you? I don't think that is a wise thing to post.

I think the idea of merit at least on a numbers level is to be somewhat unfair.. or at least make a low-level effort not worth it.  I think bounties are being hurt by high participation and also hurting the bounty's success (some of the things I see posted on twitter posts or youtube are just downright ridiculous, poor English.. poor presentation.. it's all linked together).  The reality is the population needed to succeed in whatever capacity the forum requires already exists, and having 0 new members would only make it more rewarding to those participating.  The curve is certainly somewhat unfair for late adopters but the only thing in life you really can't ever make up for with effort is time... so it really makes sense.  It'll require 10x more effort now compared to an early forum adopter but maybe 1000x more effort 3 years from now... the curve will only work more against you.  The idea isn't to be fair, the idea is to find the top 1-5% and have them join in and weed the rest out.

I'm with you it sucks.. but I'm going to put in the effort because I see the benefit of the system even if it doesn't serve me.  It's not high ranking member's fought that I didn't join in the early days when the "proof of work" was easier difficulty.
