A retarget issue is a concern for a lot of pool owners right now which im sure you are aware of basically causing the difficulty estimate to not show correctly which is important for miners because it allows them to change coins at the right time if they feel the diff will be too high.
[/b]

As long as the pool owners know the diff retarget is 60 minutes and have their config files properly set, then the pool estimates for difficulty and the block# are correct. I know at least a couple of the pools have it correct now. It should be updated on the main thread however so there is no more future confusion.

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

I've tried and tried to convince the developer to implement some type of spam filter.  I've even suggested plugins and other resources he/she could use.  But nothing has been done.  They did make me a mod of the forum and I've been volunteering my time (NO PAY - NO COMPENSATION) to try and clean out the forum of spam.  But because the developer doesn't take the few minutes to setup a "spam" filter its just about pointless.

I would have been willing to build a fully functional and beneficial site for the community, but if the developer(s) are so disattached from the coin that they don't care what happens to their simple forum they threw up on a site, why should I invest any additional time or energy trying to help, promote, and support a coin that at this moment has no value at all.

I come back to the forum after 12+ hours away and there are over 22 pages of spam on the forum alone...

Where is the developer?

If you want a coin to succeed you MUST be a part of the community and the coin.

I went and cleaned out the forum one last time.  (My gift back to the community... what is left of it).  If the developers actually want to invest in this coin... it would be good if we could see something out of them.

Thanks for your time on the forum. I agree with you completely. I have pm'd the dev a few days ago and no response. I'm inclined to believe that we've been left out in the cold on this one.

Although...I don't necessarily believe that we NEED the dev to be involved. We're all sitting around waiting for the dev to make the moves, but honestly, we as the community could accomplish just as much. This is an open source coin and it's been unleashed on a p2p network. The dev has no official ties to it other than the 2M premine (and perhaps the twitter acct and aliencoin.org url).

Is there by chance a group of supporters of this coin that could be willing to take over? We know we need a site and then we need to generate some attention. That's pretty much how DOGE got so huge....they stood for a cause and were able to get the support. In an earlier post, I proposed that we might consider setting SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) up with a wallet and the community could donate ALN to support them. I had assumed that the dev would be willing to contribute a significant donation from the premine, but I'm not sure we'll get that. We could make all kinds of noise to get noticed on the forums, twitter, facebook, and maybe even the SETI site.

If the Aliencoin community wants to, I can help fork the code from github, push out a new update which will allow us to chase the development of the coin.  I also own alienco.in domain name so we've got something that we could set up ASAP.

A splash screen is up on http://alienco.in for now until we decide what we're going to do.

And if you want to have a discussion about the future of the coin.  I'm in a new chat room #ALNcoin on Freenode

What would the benefits of forking the coin be? What would happen with coins already mined or would that be starting over?

Here's my thoughts...

To take complete control of the "coin/community", we would fork the coin. (Implement some additional code to protect the longevity of the coin, KGW and a few other tweaks.)  BUT... we want current users of the coin to benefit from their current commitment to the coin. So my proposal is a little unusual and I'm not sure if any alt-community has ever done something like this.

  • We fork the code. (Actually most of this is already done, I've already forked the github code and been tweaking the codebase, I just need to commit my modifications, KGW implementation, and tweaks to the QT build.)
  • Before we relaunch the new ALN coin, we have a 24 HOUR redemption period.  During this redemption period all users who want to turn in their current version of the ALN coin will be credited a percentage of the total redeemed coins.  For example if Bob turns in 200 coins, Mary turns in 100, and Victor turns in 700, then Bob will receive 20% of the premine. Mary will receive 10% of the premine, and Victor receives 70% of the premine.
  • We will have a predetermined premine of the new ALN coin version.  The premine will be used only as a way to distribute the fair work levels that current ALN users have been mining for.  So all your hard work for the past month will not be for loss. It will be as if you were "investors" in the new version of the coin.
  • I already have contacts at a number of groups that promote and host sci-fi conventions and there was strong support when I briefly talked to them about using the new ALN coin as a payment system for sci-fi conventions.  This would drive a whole new crowd of people to the coin to mine the coin, trade/purchase the coin so that they could attend a convention.  This is something no other coin has achieved (to my knowledge).
  • Something that was asked of me last night in the IRC, What about the current developer?  Didn't he premine 2,000,000 coins?  According to my calculations, we are on block 67000(ish) at 40 coins a block.  That puts the total coins at around 2.7 million coins in existence. (please correct me if I'm missing something)  We could choose to put a limit on the redemption.  I don't want to cut anyone out of the "premine/redistribution" process.  But does anyone (individually) have more than 500,000 ALN coins? (not talking about the developer who said he took 2 million or something)  Because we could always cap the redemption amount of coins during the redemption period.

This is one idea. We could also go in a different direction and create a new coin.  But I believe there is still a community that wants this coin to succeed.  The last time the developer touched the github code was over a month ago and that isn't going to cut it.

I plan to talk to a number of the pool operators today to get their take on the issue, because many of them have invested time, energy, and money into an unprofitable coin (at this point).

Tomorrow, I have two scheduled "talks" with two exchanges about how they would view the "rebranding/takeover" of a non-traded coin.  So I think by Thursday, we will have some answers as to what some of the key players in the current version of ALN will have to say.  As for the current developer.... umm we are having this discussion out in the open and I would have thought they/he/she would have stepped up by now to either interject, offer an opinion, quell the masses... but we've heard nothing.  I'm not even sure the developer knows these thoughts are being talked about.

What are other people's thoughts?

This will not work, the community need to stick together and do some promotion work themselves. You can not just change the coin like this as I disagree with what your suggesting.

Yes the devs need more input but that's down to them the community need to do work themselves but not with ideas you are suggesting. But I do appreciate your help.

The fork will NOT be happening, the reason I haven't been online is due to working away. Someone emailed me about saying someone is trying to do a takeover. Simply won't be happening, later tonight I will be online updating.. the forum will also be implemented with a spam system, sorry I haven't been active but the real owner is back and I'm going to try 110% to make this a success I will also consider kimo gravity well, best regards. Dev.

I'll check back in a day or two to see if the developer has followed through with his promises.  Words are one thing... actions are another.

And a quick reminder for everyone... this conversation has been happening out in the open.  Nobody is trying to hide things from other people.  This is a community trying to rally around a coin that up to this point hasn't seen a lot of support or promotion by the developer.

And if the developer doesn't have time... isn't that what the premine was suppose to take care.  To raise the "funds" to pay others to help the coin?  So the statement that the community NEEDs to do the promotion and do the work for the coin is pointless if the developer doesn't step up and take the lead... otherwise the premine is seen as a simple way for for the dev to dump their premine as soon as it hits the exchange and walk away from the coin.

The community wants the coin to succeed... but it means nothing if the developer doesn't SHOW they want the coin to succeed.

And remember this is an open source coin... if the community decides they WANT to fork the coin.  There is absolutely nothing the dev can do to stop it.

Message to the dev - Please step up and take a more active role in the community.  We want you and the coin to succeed.  But nobody is going to do the work "for you".
