I am starting to get really sick of these coin lauches. No matter how I choose a pool, I always pick one or two of those which end up dead/scam/crashed/forked/etc, so I never really get a nice number of coins.

Avoiding dead ones is quite easy (add failover or cycle pools at launch until first one gets online), for avoiding crashes and scam - well, that one is tough, you'll usually find out once it is too late, though if the pool comes from someone already hosting other pools, you can judge by their history.
