In my opinion Bitcoin as well as few good potential Altcoins are better to invest.
But i recommend you Bitcoin because all Altcoin's progress and growth depend on Bitcoin. Because Bitcoin's growth is permanent but Altcoin's growth depend upon project's concept, development team and their community because these are main factors for choosing any coin.
I think, you divide your fund in 50-50 ratio and invest in Bitcoin as well as in good & promising market-cap Altcoins, then definitely you will get good return in long term.

If you have bitcoin for now, I could say that buying altcoin at the moment is a good things to do to buy it then hold.
