Somehow, the low difficulty flash-mining has crashed servers that run the EBT wallet. It looks like all of the pools and the block explorer are down.

The block chain appears fine, however.

Sounds like we need more pools for mining.

8,895.683 EBT = $1 USD

price dropped recently so i'm taking advantage of buying a few cheap to pad my balance.

EBT is over 300 votes on swisscex.com/voting

Hi, my ebtcoind having issue with : "ERROR: mempool transaction missing input" flood in debug.log

Here's what's going on:

The EBT Proof of Work difficulty periodically drops to a very low value (close to 0.01). When that happens, miners see an opportunity to flash mine many blocks at the low difficulty. In principle, the flash mining should not be a problem.

However, during flash mining many blocks are created very fast, which overloads the most connected network nodes, like pool servers, block explorers, and other nodes that are on stable, public IP addresses. When these nodes get overloaded they crash. This problem is not because of the EBT wallet software but is simply a limitation of the servers themselves and the underlying TCP/IP architecture.

To address this problem, the EBT developers have decided to put a floor on the difficulty at 0.4. With this floor, a flash mining event similar to the one we had last night would require over 700 MH/s, which is 20 times the peak experienced last night (about 35 MHs). Because Proof of Stake minting is computationally much easier than Proof of Work mining, Proof of Stake will be able to easily carry the network even in the absence of Proof of Work hashes.

We have spoken to all but one pool operator about this change and all of them we have contacted have agreed to it. The change will be released in a major wallet update tonight (hopefully) and the difficulty floor will go into effect in five days (some time early on 6/10/2014 GMT).

Other wallet features in this update will include:

  • Coin Control
  • Dedicated Wallet Unlock Button on the Overview Page
  • Cosmetic Enhancements

Don't do that!!!!

We can help you recover your EBT. Please contact the devs if you have difficulty.

Move your wallet.dat out of the way and reload the blockchain.

Dont worry, i put my pool in maintenance mode, sent all my coins to another wallet, then sent them back.
Nothing lost ! :-)

@EBT

I haven't seen it mentioned before: does the blockchain or the miners get the tx fees, or are they destroyed?

how you would explain that???
we are mining, but in some moment, all our work is mysticaly deleted and block count drops down to previous
and my mining wallet was always > 40 connections , before it's begin to happen
on screenshot about 70 minutes orphaned

I'm glad you posted that, I thought I was hallucinating.  I also thought I had 1000+ more in my wallet when I shut down for cleaning than when I fired her up again.

Me thinks a .4 difficulty floor is a bit harsh.  I haven't seen the net hashrate over 100 mh/s for a Long Time.  It makes it harder on the smaller miners, I think.

Maybe .2, if it deserves a higher diff, it will earn it.

The most likely explanation is that the chain you are mining gets orphaned by other flash miners.

[edit] Your client then needs to catch up on the longer block chain. [/edit]

The difficulty floor should address this problem.

An 0.2 difficulty floor should be safe from 100 MH/s flash mining. The developers will look again at the floor and come to a resolution before the wallet release tonight.

but my block chain is already longer (higher block count, isnt it?)

I'm glad you posted that, I thought I was hallucinating.  I also thought I had 1000+ more in my wallet when I shut down for cleaning than when I fired her up again.

Getting the new release out to fix the low difficulty problem is our highest priority right now.

If we can get all pools and poloniex to promise an upgrade to the new wallet within 24 hours, we will aim to put the floor in at 72 hours.
