Surfing on the bitcointalk forum, I sometimes see some threads discussing about hacking of wallets and the discussion is geared towards the best wallets to secure individuals from hackers. Hardware wallets are normally mentioned. I decided to find out about hardware wallets and my searches made me know that, wallets which are normally hacked are of software base. I found out that some viruses which attack computers are able to steal private keys from the software wallets that we normally use. The issue of virus attacking a computer makes the use of hardware wallet very advantageous over software wallet since the hardware wallet are immune against viruses, hence viruses cannot steal from such wallets. My question is what are some of the hardware wallets and how can one get a hardware wallet?

I just a little bit understand about your question.
There are some hardware wallet
1 Trezor
2 Nano ledger
3 Created your own hardware wallet through used USB (someone has posted how to do this)

If you are interesting to get hardware wallet and you can try to go to
1 https://trezor.io/ (if you are interested to buy trezor) it has a better security compared with nano
2 https://www.ledgerwallet.com/ (If you are interested to buy nano) it was focusing to support various coins.

Honestly, i'm trezor user and i never have any problem with it. But in my experience use software wallet is safe too as long as you can keep your desktop clean from the malware anytime.

Well it depends on your needs and purpose. For me I  would prefer to use hardware wallet for long term hold of coins  where you can kept for long period of time or sometimes open it. But for daily transactions I prefer online wallet say for example for  trading. I let it stay on  exchanges, a substantial amount for easy trading and transfer of funds to other web wallet.

There are both advantage and disadvantage for bith hardware and software wallet. But which one will you prefer will depend on you as if you want to hold it for a long time than hardware wallet is better Abd if you want to transact daily than online wallet is better option. So choice is yours.

If you're talking about holding coin. then I'd prefer the hardware wallet like most of the members preferred.. but if you wanna hold more time then you can also use paoer wallet. as you know you can't hack paper 😜.. but for daily use i mean trading. you can use online wallets for daily transection. they are time efficient and easy to use in any place.

I think hardware wallet is safe for all investors. Peoples are using these wallets and not complain against hardware wallet. Trezor is the best hardware wallet. But it’s also true no wallet is not 100%secure.

Which wallet you will use that totally depends on needs and purpose. But if you use hardware wallet that will be better for you if you are going to hold it for long term. But if you are going to hold for short term then you can use software wallet.

Hackers are now very smart and can break any purse, even hardware, but it's very difficult to do. Hardware wallets now really have the highest level of baskeyki and I've heard a lot of good reviews about Nano ledger

Ledger Nano, Trezor are well known best hardware wallet. Also, you can create your own hardware using a USB drive. Using trezor is a little messy while Ledger Nano is a totally user-friendly wallet. In addition, Ledger Nano supports various coins. Here is a link for Ledger.

Software wallets have enough protection but still it's hackable.and you can see this type of news often .So people use hardware wallet tensor and ledger nano a is best in my opinion .But I don't use any cause the price of hardware wallet is very high if you don't have enough portfolio to protect then it's hard to buy one.Still I'd you have one you are risk free.

Those software based wallets that got hacked most of the time is compromised because of it's users itself and IMO software wallets can be as secure as a hardware wallet if you have taken enough actions to secure your wallet. Better yet, try storing your coins in a paper wallet. IMO it is almost as secure as a hardware wallet for long term hold, it is also cheaper.

The top 2 wallets which are mostly used in the crypto world is Nano LedgerS & Trezor, you can easily buy it with a credit/debit card or BTC from their official website. Keep in mind never buy it form 3rd party, resellers or online from Amazon/eBay. They usually sell used wallets means they already hold the seeds for that wallet so avoid it. Make sure the first time when you turn on your hardware wallet it must ask you set up a pin & to store your seed words if it didn't ask you then for sure it is used.

I agree with you, not just the hardware wallet which is a safe place to store our assets but the software wallet is also safe as long as we protect our computer in the right and good way.

I agree, I also use trezor and never had a problem with it. But eitherway, both nano and trezor are good investments if you are looking for long term.

For the safest of your cryptos, I recommend using hardware wallets like Ledge Nano S and Trezor. Recently, e-wallets such as MEW have been hacked and exploited by the hacker, causing severe damage. So you should invest money to buy Ledge Nano S if you want to store ETH and Trezor if store Bitcoin.

when you lose in softwallet, you have still back up in hardware wallet

I don't think there is a wallet without any threat. While software wallets are prone to hacks, hardware wallets are prone to damages. One's advantage is the others disadvantage and vise versa.

Hardware wallet since is offline without keylogger is more secure than software wallet, but you need to have a decent amount of money in cryptocurrencies since the price is near 100$.

I dig some previous discussion Hardware Wallet for you mate:

I'm pretty sure that you will find tons of idea on which hardware wallet can suits you. Actually hardware wallets are fairly cheap that's why I don't understand why people keeps on using online or even desktop wallet. Although other wallets have advantages, specially if you are a daily trader, but if you are a long term investor and just wanted to HODL bitcoin for more than a year, then definitely a Hardware wallet is the best for you.

Well i have heard a lot about hardware wallets and i see the use for it. It is safe and secure. Most people i know use trezor. But i don't have one yet. Honestly, i can't afford it. I don't have a bitcoin yet so i really don't think i need that much security. Im just trading a little of what i have. I use software wallets for now and im ok with it.

My opinionis that HW does not provide better security than a proper (redundant) encrypted backup if your intent is to use it as a cold storage. Storing your bitcoin in electrum on your daily use pc may not be the best idea. A hardware wallet is (in my view) a compromise between being able to do transactions (without going through the hassle of taking coins out of cold storage), while maintaining a reasonable level of protection against your pc being compromised.

I think safest ERC20 wallet is software offline MEW.
Use your private keys and generate transactions on the offline PC only and send those generated transactions on the other online computer.
Since your PKs are offline all the time, they can't be stolen...

I am not using any hardware wallets in my entire crypto since I have been trading, I prefer that my crypto assets are in exchange so that I can easily trade it in the day without any transaction fees to consider. Works well by the way.

If you are a short term trader and needs fund frequently, then I would suggest you to go for a legit software wallet or app. If you are a long term HODLer, buy a hardware wallet like Trezor, Nano Ledger etc and keep your funds there. There are chances of software wallets and app getting hacked by downloading a malicious software in your system. You are responsible for your own safety in cryptos, do that wisely.

In my opinion hardware wallet even though it costs decent amount of money it is a better solution in terms of safety. As with hardware wallet you do your needed transfer than you disconnect it, while with software you are always online.

Both of Wallets are good but it's depend on you that which purpose you use those wallets. If you want to hold coin's or token's for long term then Hardware wallet is good for that or If you want hold for short term then Software wallet good for that.

There are advantage and disadvantage for both two (hardware and software wallet). But to me the hardware is more preferable, it's more reliable. But it's now depends on you

I was also confuse about this two types of wallet. But many experts recommend me to go for the hardware wallet as its more secure. Actually online wallet is also secure unless your private data is leaked or stolen somehow.

My question is what are some of the hardware wallets and how can one get a hardware wallet?
some kind of hardware wallets are trezor and nano ledger,  you can get one by buying it online or directly through their site. just search their site on google and im sure you will find it.

Hardware wallets are always advisable because they are less prone to hacks and breaches. Software wallet can be kept safely, but it still at risk to be affected by some viruses or Trojan. Hardware wallets only have a chance of getting stolen which can also happen with a device you have kept your wallet on. You can also try paper wallet. This is cheaper alternative to cold storage.

i think that hardware wallet is needable only if you have a lot of crypto, if your total crypto portfolie is not more then 10 000 - 30 000 usd worth then use software wallet, if bigger then you need to use hardware wallet for sure

It is great that people seek ways to protect cryptocurrencies by obtaining hardware wallets. Basic wallets are okay when you don't have a large amount of money in it. Okay, even hardware wallets are not 100% secure, but what is? Buying one is not a problem, well-known brands like Trezor or Ledger have products on their official websites, or you can find some on eBay, Amazon etc. Their prices vary from 80 dollars to 300+ dollars, but in my opinion, this investment is worth it.

hardware wallets are considered to be safer. but you should always use a clean computer. an infected computer with virus or trojan can cause to loose everything in your wallet even if you use a hardware wallet.

If you are holding bitcoin or altcoin as a long term investment I highly recommend use a hardware wallet It's safer than storing your coins on web wallet or something. You might hold some spendable amount then you can go with web wallet I just don't recommend people to hold huge balance on the internet it's better safe than sorry.

I prefer Hardware wallet too they have the best feature just like a money in a vault. Software is good also but vulnerable to some hackers i know they will find solution to maintain high security of their own blockchain.

In terms of safety then hardware wallets are much safer than software wallets because it is much harder for hackers to get into hardware wallets to steal your coins. Which is why if you are holding coins for the long term then you should get a hardware wallet to hold those coins in to be safe

Hard and soft wallet are okay, just make sure , that your pc or keys are kept in a secure place, never trust anyone and handed the keys or password to anyone, or else your going to regret it, make sure you enter your wallet address not the keys sometimes people make mistakes and accidentally insert the keys

There are some hardware wallets that is available online, ledger nano s, trezor. These wallet is the most safest place of your cryptocurrency. Not like your software wallet, it can easily breached by a virus sort of hacking, a phishing attack and many more. Not like a hardware wallet it is a hackproof wallet. Your private keys are safe in these wallet.

The type of wallet that you should use depends on your investment types and purpose. Hardware wallet is usually preferred when you want to hold huge amount coins. Also if you want to hold coins for long term hardware wallet is preferred as it provides greater security. The disadvantage to hardware wallets is their price. You might pay in the $100 range for a good one. However, transactions are generally free.

I use the Ledger Nano wallet, and I'm very pleased. Even if my computer is infected with viruses, my coins will remain safe. But there are some malicious programs that can override the recipient's address, so I always check the address displayed on the device.

Well, the fact that the hardware wallets are safer no it's not so official wallets of crypto currency are 100% safe, and if you are an idiot who pumps viruses to your computer then it is unlikely that you will even help a hardware wallet  Cheesy

I bought one as soon I was able to, its well worth it, risk those 100 bucks if you are holding a nice chuck of crypto. I only wish they would be adding support for new currencies more promptly, but as I understand, this is on the shoulders of the projects themselves.

Before the last incident happen in the breach of MyEtherwallet. I only use MyEtherwallet without any supporting third party apps because I have much confidence in the security features provided by the MyEtherwallet wallet. But when I heard the news that Myetherwallet has been breached, I used linked metamask as of now to unlock myEtherwallet wallet. To ensure that my private keys is safe. But if you have a hardware wallet, it is more safe to store your funds in a hardware wallet because it is fully encrypted and can never be hacked by a hacker because of its great security. My advise is to use a hardware wallet to access your funds.

Software wallets are more vulnerable toward user's mistake. Hardware wallets can prevent most user fraud, and so reduce the risk. But it is not as convenient as a software wallet for most people.

Lol are you joking? Your token can be stored in only one place and you can't try to take the privatekey from your hardware wallet. I thought your solution is not helpful at all. Everyone should go to the hardware wallet as the first choice and then software wallet as the second choice and that's the correct answer.

A hardware wallet is the safer option than a software wallet. The thing about hardware wallet is that you do not have to be online or connected to the internet to access your coins so there is less worry about your wallet being hacked online. it is the safest option if you are holding coins for the long term to keep them safe

From information gathered here, it implies hardware wallets are the best. But everything that's all cool and sweet has a downside to it. There was some news of a trezor wallet getting hacked, and for me I still hardware wallets have some degree of vulnerability that's yet to be discovered.

Hardware wallets are a good choice in the context of the numerous cryptos attacks of the past. If you are holding BTC or ETH, then Ledge Nano S is a reasonable choice. Hardware wallets will be more convenient than software wallets if you only hold cryptos without the need for regular trade on exchange floors.

I just got a Ledger Nano S and I love it. The biggest advantage is that your private key is stored completely offline and never exposed to your computer, so your chances of getting your wallet hacked are as close to zero as they come. If you lose it, you can restore your wallet to another device or another wallet entirely with the seed. It truly is an investment that could save you thousands down the line.

If you're thinking of long term holding, then you'd better purchase a hardware wallet as software wallets are more likely to be hacked. Software wallets are efficient for short time holding. I hear Trezor is the most recommended wallet right now.

in my opinion, wallet hardware is safer in my opinion. because the software wallet is vulnerable,
to hacking the wallet case and thus reducing the risk. But it's not as easy as a software wallet for most people.

It would always be better to purchase a hardware wallet with the original distributor on their website, I purchased my Ledger Nano S hardware wallet a few years ago and it is still working fine until today, and I feel much more secured to store most of my bitcoin and altcoins on it.

Hardware wallets are considered safer and more secure than online wallets.  If you have a lot of altcoin and you want to hold them long.  I think you should order a purse.  Have you found hardware wallet purses at online stores

This is a world of numbers, and various parameters and improvements happen at any time, so using a digital wallet is very good and can be updated in a timely manner. But the hardware wallet is very cumbersome, with inserts for each use, and frequent updates.

Hardware wallet can Offers much better security than an online wallet and a bit better security than a software wallet. Allows funds to be sent to and from the device. Doing this often will reduce its security though. While Software wallet Usually user-friendly designs. Software wallets have been made to give users the easiest way to use the Ethereum blockchain. Sending, receiving, and importing private keys should all be very simple when using any well-known software wallet.Easy to access Ether and other digital currencies. If you make a lot of purchases from online sellers using your Ether, payments can be sent quickly and simply from a software wallet. However, both wallet have their own disadvantage. You need to choose the best wallet that fits to you.

Hardware wallets also have some safety problems, so i recommend you, first of all, save your private keys ONLY in paper version. Dont use any clouds, because they can be hacked.

Well you are absolutely right that soft ware wallets are not the most ideal. They are prone to viruses and if you have a significant amount of money in crypto then you definitely need to store your coins on a hard ware wallet.

The best hardware wallets today are probably

Trezor and Ledger Nano

Both are pretty easy to use and very safe as well.

Though it should be noted that a safely maintained offline paper wallet if used properly is probably the safest option.

i know of trezor and nano ledger for hardware.  and the latest is bitfi which john mcaffee is actively promoting.  i think you should get this.
as for software wallet, if you have a good understanding about crypto, you can be safe with good decision on which wallet to choose.

Software wallets are fine for small amounts of crypto or small volumes of trading. But for your long term holds consider a hardware wallet or you could do what I do and just send your coins into cold storage. Cold storage is by far the safest since your private keys never touch the internet or even another device for that matter. Hardware wallets like the Ledger Nano S are one step below cold storage in terms of safety but are still very very safe.

I think thereis totally comparison when it comes to these two. Hardware wallets are definitely the choice here as they are not only effective but also puts the safety of your account into your own hands. The main short coming of software wallets is the fact that  they are web based. putting them at the mercy of hackers who can easily get access to them whenever they so wish.  Hardware wallets might cost you a few dollars to buy but in the long run the security they offer is worth it

before, you must pay attention to several things to secure your wallet.
1. Save your private key properly.
in a bitcoin wallet there is a private key and a public key, the public key is a bitcoin address. and a private key is the key that you must keep secret from others.
2 You must activate the 2FA feature.
3. Use a stronger password
4. Do not store bitcoin in the exchange wallet and in the soft wallet.

and there are some hard wallets that you can use like TREZOR, Ledger Nano, paper wallet, Hardbit, and others.

I have heard many thoughts about advantage of hardware wallet before an online wallet, but I'm actually using an online one without feeling any of this advantage for uncomfortableness, so it is a personal choice.

For safest, you should use hardware wallet instead of e-wallet to store cryptos. E-wallet at present is the most popular MEW, and you can see that MEW has been hacked many times and hacked the cryptos. So if you have money, then you should buy hardware wallet like Trezor and Ledge Nano S to get the highest security for your cryptos.

Ledger nano is good to pick and your suggestion is almost right. sometime people save their coins in exchange wallet and not put 2fa. but they are just careless and blame the market itself. they should know the risk first before save their money in market

Hardware wallets are the best.

MEW is only for ERC20 tokens and Ethereum.

If there's no budget to avail hardware wallets and you have a smartphone, there are android wallet apps like coinomi that you can use as an alternative.

This is a bit of a noob question. Firstly, there is no perfect wallet and particularly there is no perfect wallet for everyone. Personally I use a soft wallet, because I don´t have that many coins and I can keep my computer safe.

I think a hardware wallet is better, I dont know, I think software wallets are way more susceptible to hacks, I mean, both of them are hackable after all, because the hardware wallets still uses an USB port to connect to devices, but I would stick to hardware for now.

I agree with you, most people makes use of hardware wallet more than software wallet and this is because they believe your private keys stays intact with you when making any transactions, and you can buy any hardware wallet on many online stores like Amazon

In my opinion, hardware wallets are more better storing ways according to software wallets. Of course no wallet can give you %100 protection of your coins, but for me, they are giving more trust and security.

For me its better to use hardware wallet because how the hackers hack the wallet without connection so that hardware wallet use for those who have a bug amount of coins. I have a friend that also using a hardware wallet and their is a many private key for the security so that hardware wallet its better than software that connected to the internet and easy to hack

The only good thing about the sofware wallet is that it is mobile, you can use it almost everywhere where you have internet. But it is not secure. See how many hacker attacks are on cryptocurrencies.
So I recommend hardware wallet only - Ledger or Trezor are trustworthy.

It seems to me that for the stable operation it is enough to start an offline wallet and use it on a computer without an Internet connection

Well, they both have their insecurities, software wallet can be really cheap to hold while hardware wallets can give the impression of being way too more secure, I will stick to software wallets for the moment until I see some great results from hardware wallet users.

I have heard a lot about bother the software and hardware wallets but in my opinion I prefer the software wallets as long as you can keep the private keys safe.
I am a not skeptical about the hardware wallets because physical things like that get stolen every time and I wouldn't want to keep my assets on a device that can be stolen or lost or otherwise get destroyed.

I like hardware wallets.
They are physical you can hold them and keep them safe, it is also possible to back IP the tokens on another hardware wallet which can be used in a case where one wants to recover coins or tokens of a lost wallet device.
What I don't understand is how this wallet can manage assets of different Blockchain like bitcoin and Ethereum, can someone enlighten me?

I think both are better. But I think hardware wallets are being the good to secure the coins/tokens and the private keys for the long term and We can use these wallets easily without harmless

I think software wallets are easier to use while hardware wallets are safer to use so in other words it depends on what you would choose, safety or ease of use.
I for one prefers software wallets

My question is what are some of the hardware wallets and how can one get a hardware wallet?

Hardware wallet is very good if you have big crypto asset then it is good to secure it with a hardware wallet and there are many hardware wallet but the most popular ones are
1 Trezor
2 Nano ledger

And you can get it on many shopping site like Amazon and many other shops,

From the point of security view, I certainly choose a physical wallet, where the probability of stealing your money is much less than usual. But I own small amounts of cryptocurrency, because so far I have enough and a virtual wallet. MEW, for example.

Yes, the hardware wallets are the best way to keep our funds away from hackers.  Get yourself a Ledger or TREZOR Hardware wallet, both costs less than 100$.

This also depends on the financial and nature, the number of alcoins. If you are holding a large amount, use a hard wallet. Small or small, use a soft wallet, as the cost of buying a wallet is expensive

Both of them have the same function which is to keep safe your cryptocurrency but both of them has its pros and cons, and its a personal preference, if you want, get neither of the two.
Hardware wallet.
1. A bit pricey, sometimes cost too much in order to get the best hardware for security.
2. Preferred by experienced traders/investors because of its high-security features.
3. Can be misplace/lost physically.

Software wallet.
1. Prone to Hacks.
2. Some crypto wallet can lead to bankruptcy.
3. Free w/ reasonable transaction fee which depends on your wallet.

There is  absolutely nothing wrong with software wallet! Many claim we see about hardware wallet is about marketing. Anything and everything is hackable, the resource and time for such endavour is what make it hard! Just keep your system and practise safe uses then you are good!

I can not call myself over-informed in this area, but I prefer to keep my savings on cold wallets, because I trust them much more.

Chance to crack the first, far less likely, than the second. In my opinion, I would rather trust myself and ensure the safety of their funds than any third parties.

It seems to me that here the answer as a whole is obvious, because hardware wallets always have greater security than software purses, since software wallets can be subject to greater threats than hardware wallets.

Your money is safe in hardware wallet because it is offline and it can't be stolen. Whereas , in software wallet , hackers can hack and steal all your money and you can do nothing.

Hardware wallet is really the best wallet at the moment. You can buy it. I ordered a TREZOR hardware wallet through a friend and it came out to me at $ 100.

In the event that you are a fleeting merchant and requirements subsidize much of the time, at that point I would recommend you to go for a genuine programming wallet or application. On the off chance that you are a long haul HODLer, purchase an equipment wallet like Trezor, Nano Ledger and so forth and keep your assets there. There are odds of programming wallets and application getting hacked by downloading a malignant programming in your framework. You are in charge of your own security in cryptos, do that admirably.

Hardware wallet is absolutely security about individual personal. Simply because it has a button to active so any hacker is also failed to access. Three main hardware wallet categories, which is usually used, are Ledger Nano S, Trazor and Keypeer with average price about 70 - 250$.

I think the hard wallet is best and most secure.  I like the ledger where you have to have possession of it for funds to be allowed to transfer.  This almost seems un-hackable unless a kidnapping occurs.

Hardware wallet is more safe than software wallets. And tenzor and ledger nano s is best if you want one. You also can make a hardware wallets in your home. If you don't hand over to another person it is safest way to keep your crypto safe from world. For a long time I used software wallets and I think its also safe if you chose right one. They also have great security . just keep your PC disconnected from internet or keep the key on a safe place. And when you open any link on PC or browser always check for malware. That's it. Most of the people use software wallets till now and its fine. And those who lost their money its their fault.

If you choose the right operating system on your device and divide your assets between different addresses(hot/cold) if you got a big amount than it will be enough to secure your savings. Honestly I don't believe hardware wallets, maybe for now and it will change someday

Hardware wallet is always safer than the software or online wallet. If your asset is already huge better to invest on hardware wallet to make it safe from hackers.
