do ethereum compete with bitcoin?

It depends on how do you compare them and what do you want to use them for. Ethereum is better than Bitcoin and Bitcoin is better than Ethereum at the same time. They’re not competitors. They coexist and solve different types of problems.

Bitcoin is really far more recognizable in the world. Ethereum is less known and younger. Ethereum uses “move fast and break things” motto, it learned from Bitcoin and fixed a couple of issues in it’s design and the community is smaller and therefore has more developers than speculators.

Bitcoin is a currency used for purchasing goods and services, as well as storing value (much like how we currently use gold), it is a new currency created to compete against the gold standard and fiat currencies. But Ethereum is a token used for making Apps (decentralized apps) on the Ethereum blockchain, it's a token capable of facilitating Smart Contracts (For example: a lawyer’s contract, an  exchange of ownership of property, and voting).

I don't really see them as competing with eachother, they're both different. Would be good if the ETH trading pairs got more volume though.

Bitcoin itself is two things: it’s a digital currency known bitcoin (lowercase, also referred to as BTC) and Bitcoin is a technology (also known more generally as blockchain). Both are called the same thing which admittedly can be confusing for newbies. Bitcoin = The name of the Bitcoin network bitcoin = The currency (or BTC). With Ethereum it’s similar, but slightly different: the token is called ether (or ETH) and the network is Ethereum. Ethereum = The Ethereum network, ether = The token (of ETH).

I've heard predictions about Ethereum will beta bitcoin several times for last two years and every time it wont happend. Bitcoin too strong now in comparison with ethereum. imho probably some of top 3-5 will replace ethereum in nest several years.

Many altcoin always competing with bitcoin as of today though prices are declining. Ethereum has more users and also with bitcoin but I can't see ethereum beat bitcoin. For the meantime bitcoin is the top crypto of all time and I believe it will remain as top crypto.

In fact it is like that, Etherum with bitcoin. actually ethereum is very superior, look at tokens and coins nowadays, lots of which use ethereum platform. we just need to wait for the new breakthrough of bitcoin so that bitcoin can succeed again. currently bitcoin is superior because bitcoin is a coin that introduces Cryptocurrency to the whole world.

Of course not, I think Ethereum is a close relative of BTC. They are in the same world, all right but not always. ETH has created its own platform in recent years, but Bitcoin remains unique and special. The Ethereum market is bigger than Bitcoin but as I said BTC is something unique and not easily shifted from the top.

If we compare the potential and not the current costs, then ethereum will probably be a bitcoin heavy competitor.
One other way to become a bitcoin competitor is if etherium is able to develop the latest technologies in an effort to win the trust of potential investors.

enough computing power and enough time anything can be calculated. With Bitcoin, there is not this form of flexibility Ethereum at the same time  they’re not competitors wondering whether it could overtake Bitcoin as the dominant cryptocurrency !!

Maybe, but maybe it will take a long time. Bitcoin is the main choice coin in crypto and many of investors choose bitcoin as an investment, and it will make it difficult for ethereum to beat bitcoin.

It's impossible, forever everyone knows the right choice is Bitcoin, and will always keep the first one, whereas ethereum will be second. In the current scenario, Bitcoin becomes a price determiner, as bitcoin prices rise so Ethereum automatically also raises prices, but when Bitcoin falls, Ethereum also drops in the market. That's great bitcoin.

I have also always thought that the next after bitcoin is ethereum. This is also very obvious, owing to the achievements made so far by ethereum. Most times, if investors do not invest in bitcoin, they will invest in ethereum. Ethereum is a good competitor of bitcoin.
