A crypto trader from the Netherlands had been brutally tortured in front of his 4-year-old daughter, by 3 suspects disguised as police.  The investigator suspected that the criminals stole some private keys, passwords that transferred the victim's fund to the suspect's wallet. How could the criminal know his a trader and identity, location? Could this be an inside job?

This is the exact reason why I really dislike buying those bitcoin stickers and shirts. The last thing I want is to be tortured for me to give the criminals my private keys. Wearing bitcoin or cryptocurrency-related paraphernalia is pretty much like a huge "rob me" sign and is a huge unnecessary risk a person is taking.

This was surely an inside job. That's why is always better to keep you mouth shut even when you are talking to your best friend. It's clear that the criminals new exactly what they are looking for, especially when we are talking about private keys and they knew their value. That's why the robbed him for.

The robbers probably got the user's identity from some company or someone who has information. This is the reason why I hate my identity being discovered by anyone. It's too scary to think that just because I know cryptocurrency, I could get into a situation like this. This is why I avoid KYC or any other things that could potentially risk my identity. It's kind of scary.

This might be the worst scenario of being a crypto related person, whether you're a trader, seller or anything related in crypto, to them nothing is excuse, so better to keep silent and don't talk much on what's your gain in crypto for security  purposes.

This one seems like an insider job. That's the reason why I stopped using any kind of social media starting January 2019. I deleted my personal facebook and Insta profile because I don't want to let people know how I am living my life and what I am doing on weekends or in any vacation. Making your private life visible to others is a significant risk nowadays as you can easily get spotted by someone with vicious intention. Because when others see that you have bought a car or a house, they immediately starts judging your income and jealousy follows just after that! I hope police cracks this case real soon and put the criminals behind bars!

My advice for Americans and those where it's legal to do so is to arm yourself and always have your gun handy in case violent intruders enter your property. In Europe, perhaps there are other safeguards. What happened in the Netherlands is a great example of why gun ownership should be allowed among the general public.

Someone who really close to the victim are involved on this one, and its really sad to hear a news like this where there is a children in front of them, it looks like they don’t care at all just to get the money. I’m scared because of this, maybe I have to hide my real identity for good even to my friends who I can’t really trust.

No matter how secure is your wallet. If someone knows that you own some big amount of money then you won't be so resilient to physical violence. If some of you will get big amount of BTC then don't be greedy / stupid and use a good bitcoin mixer.

Even a gun won't be that useful when someone performs a planned attack when you are not expecting it.

It could be that:

[1] the victim was proudly declaring to the world that he has tons of crypto
[2] he tells his friends about his crypto and then concocted a plot to steal them
[3] somewhat overheard him telling his friends about his crypto

Anyways, in the last few years we have heard similar stories like this. There was even a Norwegian man murdered after he liquidated his assets (https://ethereumworldnews.com/a-24-year-norwegian-man-killed-after-selling-his-bitcoins/). So my advise is just to keep quite about your crypto earnings. You will never know those criminals are just around and looking to target unsuspecting crypto enthusiast.

Why isn't that is happening to people like Roger Ver and Vitalik? They aren't running around with a security team.  This guy was probably involved in some shadyt dealings and got what was coming to him.

Why such hype by a normal robbery?

Don't we hear this kind of robbery with fiat money too. People are murdering others for money. Bank robbery, hackers are hacking money from central banks.

If we compare this robbery with all those high profile crimes then do you think this is even a news? The yellow media whenever find something to blame Bitcoin, they just print it.

They want you to be scared.

Sorry, but no-one deserves to be treated that way, besides you're just making wild assumptions here.
I mean there are a number of possible scenarios here and the victim being a shady figure isn't a given.

Heck, your comment sounds like you're saying that everyone dealing with cryptocurrency is doing shady stuff.

I bet it is one of his colleagues or friends who sold him out. Or maybe if the banks are dirty out there then it could be a possibilty also. If that case happened to me then it is the bank that only knows my current amounts of transactions. Poor guy it has to go beyond that. In front of his family, I feel zad for the little girl as it will bring trauma for some years. So becareful out there guys.

Bitcoin, which is currently worth around $3,800 (£2,800), is semi-anonymous and therefore difficult to trace to a single individual.

Since its peak in late 2017, bitcoin has lost close to three quarters of its value, yet still remains an attractive prospect for criminals.

They want you to get scared of holding crypto. Why it's specifically for crypto. Any valuable asset (Gold, cash, diamond) are attractive prospect for criminals. Why only Bitcoin?

The yello media will get inside you and then they will spread the fear so that in the long run your mind shift. That's how they play.

You are completely right, much worse things are being done over cash and drugs.  The vidoes I've seen coming out of South America are gruesome.

This bitcoin theft is a drop in the bucket compared to what evil really goes on in the world.

This can be so tragic and the big lesson here is never be telling anyone much more advertised publicly or even subtly that you are involved with cryptocurrency especially if one is a trader as there can be criminals who are fast in assuming that a trader is always having much money. A criminal can force entry into your house anytime and demand to transfer your coins or tokens to another wallet in exchange for safety and because transactions are irreversible then there is nothing we can do. We have to be careful as we are now in the era where personal safety can anytime be jeopardized irrespective if we are rich or just having enough money to survive.
