The last news about this was that devs and mods were testing the recent code rebase in order to be able to proceed with the release of the DeepOnion wallet ready to port DeepSend! but some mods could clarify this better!

DeepSend planned after the code rebase complete.  And the dev team is working on the code rebase. After next week most probably we will get mod team start testing it for second time. There's no optimal, it's always about how much you can buy. Some can buy 5,000 Onions easily which is a good number, but since you get a percentage of your coins as a reward for PoS, the more you get, the better reward you'll have.
