Your advice is good because I have seen both of people who did too little research about a project and people who made false assumptions based on some facts and rest emotions. Talking to specially the team advisors is something that every investor should do.

Many times scammers create ICOs with big names of advisors but those may not actually exist, faked names or they may be real but their names added without their permission. Meaning they never became an advisor at all. So if possible try to contact these advisors and talk to them how much they think the project is worth.

I think that critical thinking is knowledge. This is important in investment generally but I see it is very difficult in cryptocurrency investment to have knowledge about the project, whether it will succeed or not, or scam too.
