Fact Over Fiction: Hollywood Movie “Inception” Is Closer To Reality Than You Think

The cinematic thrill ride Inception captured the imagination of viewers everywhere, as we all joined the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, and Joseph Gordon Levitt, while their characters delved into the dreams of others. Not only was their intention to discover what their targets were dreaming about, but to actually plant an idea within the sub-conscious— true inception — that would influence their behaviour back in the real world.

Perched on the edge of our cinema seats, this tantalising work of fiction might have seemed like pure science fantasy, but the technology required to delve into our dream experiences is only a little way behind Inception’s mind-blowing story line. A collection of bold neuroscientists working on the cutting edge of pursuing understanding of our inner workings are hacking dream states with impressive success, and it all began with believing in the unbelievable! These scientists were simply unaware that other renowned scientists in the same field were of the opinion it could not be done — that’s the problem with opinions!

A Runaway Concept

One of the doubters that changed his mind and now exclusively focuses on this field is the Israeli neuroscientist — Moran Cerf. He has never been afraid to take on the science behind our wildest imaginings. He was hard at work trying to get a handle on human decision making — big questions such as: do we really have free will, and what drives the decisions we make? He was studying this by exploring the neuron activity of brain surgery patients who volunteered to participate in his studies.

It was 2010, and Cerf answered the phone, groggy from a nap, and mistakenly implied that recording dreams was possible — In theory. Inception had seen it’s big release a few months prior, and the glossy fantasy was at the forefront of everyone’s minds. The BBC interviewer at the other end of the line had triggered a misstep that would grow into a beast of epic proportions!

The next morning, the world’s media was a-buzz with Cerf’s comment, which had magically morphed from a theoretical answer into a concrete reality. His phone blew up as businesses tried to buy into his imaginary tech, spouses asked him to spy on their partner’s dreams, and others pledged to emulate Cerf’s achievements, even though he’d never actually made them. Cerf tried to argue that dream capture was impossible, and eventually gave up answering the phone all together, trying to duck the hype that surrounded his legendary non-adventure.

A Strange Twist In The Story

After months of trying to out-manoeuvre this colossal misunderstanding, Cerf finally got some peace when — bizarrely — the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton acted as a golden carrot dazzling enough to squeeze dream-hacking from the collective minds of the baying public. Life went back to normal, and Cerf returned to his work, no longer haunted by a dream, within a dream, within a dream!

That was, until 2013. The BBC were on the phone once again, asking Cerf to comment on recording dreams. Dumbfounded, he was mystified that the BBC was re-awakening the beast, until he heard why they’d taken an interest once again. Cerf was shocked to discover that upon hearing the chinese-whispers of his fictitious work on dream-hacking, Japanese researcher Yukiyasu Kamitani had decided to emulate that which had never existed, and did so with success!

The Details Of The Dream-Scape

Cerf’s mind was blown. He realised that if he’d been more receptive to teasing at the seemingly impossible, the exploration of human dreams might have been achieved far sooner. Rather than dwelling on what had been missed, he joined the quest to explore our dreams, and is now working on projects as sci-fi-esque as: capturing visual recordings of dreams; changing behaviour through manipulation in dream-state; aligning people’s dreams, so they in essence dream the same thing; and most excitingly of all, exploring whether we can learn while dreaming. Who wouldn’t want to learn kung-fu while down for a siesta?

Where Kamitani’s team discovered how to capture visuals from our dreams using fMRI, long-term dream researcher Daniel Oldis is making strides to uncover the rest of what plays out in our minds after counting sheep. Oldis says “This is like the early years of the space race, but in this case, we’re going into the dream space.” His team discovered that, while we are in effect paralysed while we dream, the signals that tell our muscles to move still fire. This allowed him to track the body movement and speech muscle movement of dreamers, which they hope will lead to accurate capture of dream activities in real time, adding greater depth to the decoded visual recordings of our immersed state.

Hacking Our Dreaming, And Waking Minds

The research of Cerf and his peers has shed light on dream hacks such as using scent cues to train dreamers to drop bad habits, and sound cues to train them to remember specific details from the day before with greater clarity. Cerf understands that dreaming is a crucial part of how our brains process and store memory, and that the processes that take place when we sleep are key to human happiness and well-being.

While we unfortunately cannot hack our own dreams using the techniques he applies in the lab, he does conclude that through self observation and awareness we can hack our own minds at home to some extent. Through his research on decision making, Cerf concluded that the narratives we give ourselves about why we make the choices we do are often nothing more than an afterthought when one part of our brain explains the behaviour of another. Far more of our decision making processes take place “under the hood” than we might imagine.

He recommends keeping a decision making diary, to track the choices we make in our daily lives, and their positive or negative outcomes. His research demonstrated that most of us display peak states for optimal decision making, and so tracking and identifying where the hotbed of your peak state lies — whether it’s in the morning, or the evening; whether it’s when you’re hungry or satiated — can be a powerful resource for those of us who have important decisions to make. Ultimately, he believes that the better we understand our own inner workings, and the gaps between our self-perception and true inner workings, the further we will be able to push towards our potential.

We think of water as an infinite resource in the context of natural water cycles. We learn in school that water continuously repeats the process of evaporation, rainfall, rivers, ocean and back up to the skies again, but a changing climate, and human activity are dramatically altering water patterns. Increasing demand for water from growing population and industrialisation, and the globally expanding middle class make water the true Blue Gold: a resource the scarcity of which is causing an increasing amount of global conflict.

The necessity for water has always steered the course of impressively bounding human evolution, while causing it’s share of power struggle and disaster. From the masterful irrigation systems of the Ancient Egyptians to the revolutionary Aqueducts and sewer systems of the Romans, water has allowed human development to bloom. In this sense, the pure liquid is our gateway to health, hygiene and prosperity. The ancient Mayan empire fell when drought struck the central Americas, and conflict over the diversion of rivers is a repeated battle woven into the history of our species.

While this invaluable resource has been ever-bound to the fate of humanity, a new scale of threat is now wielding heavy blows. It is estimated that by 2025, roughly 1.8 billion people will live in areas burdened by water scarcity, with two-thirds of the world’s population living in water-stressed regions. If current trends of water usage are continued, accompanied by population increases and upward social mobility, the world will have only 60 percent of the water it needs by 2030. Unlike the oil crisis — with renewable energy sources on the rise — to water there are no alternatives. No alternatives, certainly, but potential solutions to be explored. What is clear is that protecting what precious water we have, and carefully managing this life-giving resource are vital to avoiding spiralling war over water.

The demand for water calls more and more for the draining of subterranean reserves, which precariously cannot be accurately measured. Automotive transport pollutes cloud water, while agriculture pollutes groundwater, and industrial production leads to the contamination of both. Tragically, some 60% of the world’s wetlands are now polluted, and water borne disease trumps both war and malaria as a global killer.

Despite these challenges, optimism is still there to find. Advancements in water treatment and distribution, alongside growing awareness, had allowed many to gain access to improved drinking water sources. We will be tested, however, in water-stressed nations such as China, where 20 percent of the world’s population reside, with only 7 percent of is water.

US non-profit, Common Sense Media, surveyed American teenagers in 2012, and then again in 2018, to discover how they prefer to connect with others. The differing results are quite astounding! The 2012 teens favoured in-person interactions, while a mere six years later, text based messaging claimed the list’s top-spot, with social media not far behind.

Cancer Research UK discovered that almost half of Brits aged 18–24 preferred online communication when needing to reach out to someone they didn’t know, and that high social media usage appeared to be making young adults feel socially isolated. Are There Realistic Alternatives to Western Liberal Democratic or Republican Systems?

Liberal democracy and capitalism stand as the cornerstones of our era. While many might argue that these two systems serve to define civilisation, swelling unrest in the West, increasing wealth disparities, and escalating tensions over our precious resources suggest that the time may have come to seek out new solutions.

In nature, evolution is the mark of longevity, and yet we inflexibly cling to the status quo with dogged determination. Is the reason of the relative failure of democracy based on persisting socio-economic inequality? In a time when politics and media are fuelled by negative spin, is it time to shift our attention towards those developing revolutionary new approaches to everything? From monetary systems, to power distribution; from resource management, to the concept of ownership: perhaps a shake up is in order. If we are to enter a new realm of civilisation that brings everyone along for the ride, I’d say it’s about time.

Limiting Factors To Be Overcome

The implementation of democracy as we now know it, in theory, offers safeguards to the freedom of any given population, and the right to engage in the political process. For it’s many successes, however, the standard Western model draws criticism from across the political spectrum. From the right, we see fear of the erosion of patriotic, moral and religious values, while from the left, frustration dominates in the face of growing economic disparity, and the failure to tackle challenges such as tax evasion, exploitation, and environmental impacts. Wherever you stand on the political slider, it is impossible not to ask: are we missing something here?

Through this current incarnation, we see a steady climb in division, leading to the escalation of religious extremism, while the third world continues to wade through what lingers from the imperialist era. The notion that such a system — that has delivered peace and prosperity to a sizeable proportion of the world’s population — has seen it’s day is certainly a hard pill to swallow. But just as new technologies reinvent the way we live our daily lives, an exploration of ground breaking socio-economic concepts may offer new hope as urgent need for change knocks loudly on the door of our international arena.

From the incremental shifts to be realised by re-imagining the processes by which we choose our governance, to the development of entirely new global systems of being, and back to the transformative approaches that are already taking root in today’s society, there is much to explore. Quoted from material provided by The Zeitgeist Movement: “We now must work towards a new, emerging paradigm — moving from a period where the central problem was the sharing of scarcity, to the problem now being one of creating and distributing abundance.” So, can it be done?

Alternatives To The Traditional Democratic Process

When we probe the concept that democracy is in crisis, it is easy to imagine that there is no alternative other than repressive autocracy. We can shed this pessimistic stance by recognising that many alternatives have been hypothesised or even put into practice — our species is nothing if not ingenuitive. In 2012, Manuel Feliz-Teixeira of Portugal envisioned “wiki”democracy, which would involve the creation of legislation for governance within a collaborative digital platform, much as Wikipedia pages are made and modified today, doing away for the need of elected leadership all together!

Others have proposed tackling the elective process through ideas such as replacing our electoral systems with models such as approval voting, which would allow voters to throw their weight behind multiple candidates, giving a perhaps more realistic view of overall opinions rather than forcing voters to choose between the party they like most, and the one they feel is most likely to win. From “Range” voting, which is how Olympic champions are made, to “Cellular Democracy” which sees local populations elect representatives, who elect representatives on a broader scale, and so on until overall leadership is formed, there are swathes of alternatives. The notion that voting for a single candidate or party in a constituency based system is the best we can come up with may be a little outdated, to say the least.

Is It Time For A Resource Based Economy?

For some, altering the way we choose our leadership does little more than scratch the surface. For those frustrated by seeing how our technological capacity is stunted by the need for profitability, and the toll capitalism takes on resource management, the answer is a Resource Based Economy.

The term was originally coined by Jacque Fresco, the founder of The Venus Project, and it defines the intent to strip away monetary value from resources — namely environmental, technological and human — and declare them all to be the common heritage of all Earth’s inhabitants. The Resource Based Economy movement favours cyclical processes over constant growth, and argues that we have all the technology required to meet our own needs, once we remove the need to pay for, and profit from, food, clothing, housing, medical care, education, and so on. Such a gift-based economy would require a major shift in social norms, as we moved from the scarcity mindset of protecting what’s ours, to the notion of sharing freely, but offers a hugely optimistic view of human potential.

Inspiration On The Ground, Today

Would we need to move a resource based economy for a significant improvement in our governing system to take place? Ironing out the kinks of how to establish such a system effectively is perhaps a gargantuan task. Whether that is our destiny or not, what is certain is that constant growth no longer seems viable, and greater social unrest is inevitable without bold new tactics to mediate the distribution of wealth, and the management of our global means.

Harvard-trained entrepreneur and designer, Stephanie Smith, applied the term “The Third Economy” to the influx of informal exchanges that are beginning to take place following the painful failures of the cash and credit economies. She felt that a new set of values needed to be framed, more attuned with modern communities, both local and virtual. As a matter of fact we are finalizing the User App right now, however please consider the following;

GRAYLL has currently 3 distinct parts: GRAYLL User App, GRAYLL System, GRAYLL Admin App. The GRAYLL System consists of 3 layers of Algorithms that function independently.

GRAYLL LP was formed in April 2019, I have worked on the algorithms and mathematical equations November 2018 - January 2019, initial coding started in January 2019, first White Paper draft in February/March 2019... if we release the GRAYLL App and GRAYLL System publicly in January 2020 we are still faster than almost any project in the space, with a highly complex system.

One has to understand, what is possible for 1 user is infinitely more complex to provide to 100,000+ users. Imagine you find out that the cost of the compute resources required to run 1 algorithmic position actually surpass the % fee you receive from the user, what do you do? These are issues that are encountered and solved everyday, every issue adds on development time and testing as well as new complexities and potential for bugs elsewhere when the issue is solved.

Development is not linear, it's not like having a list and knowing in advance what will happen, that is why neither Google, IBM, Twitter, Apple, etc etc announce any specific dates for App or product releases, in fact they keep these secret for business strategy purposes. People in Blockchain/DLT have become used to something that is unrealistic.

I cannot even begin to explain how much work is involved and what is at stake if there is a security breach or a system failure. In start-ups everything that can go wrong will go wrong... People make mistakes everyday, however generally those mistakes will not affect that many people (additionally psychologically a person will often downplay the gravity of the mistakes they make), but you have to imagine if a developer does that on any specific App or System feature, it's a risk to either App adoption, security, the use and cost of compute resources.

Many people have absolutely no any idea how much goes on to build even the most simple Apps that can scale, this is why there is often a high level of impatience and a lack of comprehension of how important it is that we deliver a highly functional, secure and scalable GRAYLL App & System.

“Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I know of no reason, why gunpowder treason, should ever be forgot.” (one of many versions of the Gay Fawkes Day rhyme). – A very ironic rhyme considering most have forgotten the point behind remembering Gunpowder Treason."

Who was Guy Fawkes?

Guy Fawkes, a pseudonym of Guido Fawkes, was a member of a group of radical English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Although he was only one of 13 conspirators, Fawkes is today the individual most associated with the failed plot.

FACT: Robert Catesby was the actual leader of the Gunpowder Plot. Guy Fawkes was romanticized by William Harrison Ainsworth‘s 1841 historical romance Guy Fawkes; or, The Gunpowder Treason which portrays Fawkes in a generally sympathetic light (prior to this Fawkes and the other plotters were seen as villains).

What was the Gunpowder Plot of 1605?

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a plan to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne (not to bring liberty to the people or anything like that).

James I / James IV in Scotland was a Scottish pro-Protestant philosopher king of sorts, he was arguably the first to argue for the Divine Right of Kings before Robert Filmer… and thus his name largely stands next to Locke and Hobbes on a list of important philosophers; hardly the perfect villain (see James and Buchanan).

Fawkes didn’t like the Scottish nobles at the time and was disappointed with their failure to extended greater religious tolerance to English Catholics.

The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of England’s Parliament on 5 November 1605, as the prelude to a popular revolt in the Midlands during which James’s nine-year-old daughter, Princess Elizabeth, was to be installed as the Catholic head of state.

TIP: This means that by any reasonable definition Guy Fawkes and company were planning “a violent act of terror” due to their religious views. This doesn’t excuse James’ policy toward Catholics (anti-Catholic legislation was introduced soon after the plot’s discovery, but loyal Catholics retained high office during King James I’s reign), but it doesn’t exactly paint Fawkes in the best of lights (especially for those who know the history of James, Buchanan, liberalism, and Protestantism in Scotland / England / Wales).

What is the Symbolism of Guy Fawkes and the Guy Fawkes Mask?

When we see the Guy Fawkes today it means two things:

    1. Today it means: We should celebrate “a little rebellion now and then“. In a free society, we have the right to non-violent protest and must remind “the powers that be” of our liberties and rights.
    2. Originally it meant, and still means: Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot is not tolerated in civil society, the Fifth of November is meant to remember that we are glad the King survived the assassination plot by the terrorist Guy Fawkes. In civil society we have courts, discourse, and laws. Before you try to blow up the House of Lords, make sure you have exhausted your legal options first. If you do think you have to take measures outside the law, you better have some consensus and a philosophically correct Declaration of Independence level document backing you… Or you just may find yourself paying a visit to the gallows.

Why the Guy Fawkes Day is an Odd Symbol for Activists

At first one may think, given V for Vendetta and Anonymous (who both helped popularized the Fawkes mask and modern social radical activism), that Guy Fawkes day is all about the joys and wonders of radical liberalism and standing up to “the establishment”, where the masked rebels are heroes of the highest order… but it is actually the opposite of that in many ways.

Essentially Fawkes was planning to blow up a bunch of officials sitting in parliament who represented both sides of the isle and a slow progression toward our modern age. The plotters were well intentioned in their own minds, but in practice they were about to blow up a rather good and fair King (historically speaking).

Not only this, but the plotters were doing it because of anti-Scottish, anti-Establishment, and Pro-Catholic ideology (thus they had their own divisive ideology, they weren’t exactly standing up for all).

It isn’t like they sent a letter or tried to pass a law or rally political support first. They didn’t lobby the king with legal means, they went straight to the gunpowder when early attempts to secure greater equality for Catholics seemed to fade.

None of our philosophical founders have ever said “gunpowder, treason, and plot are good, go for it”, sure Buchanan and Locke give justification for regicide (when no legal recourse is possible, as a last resort), but even our radical founder Thomas Jefferson was willing to put down those rebels who “unwisely” took up arms rather than using legal means (see Shays’ rebellion).

THE ORIGIN OF GUY FAWKES DAY: On 5 November 1605 Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King’s escape from assassination by lighting bonfires, “always provided that ‘this testemonye of joy be carefull done without any danger or disorder'”. An Act of Parliament designated each 5 November as a day of thanksgiving for “the joyful day of deliverance”, and remained in force until 1859. The way the day is celebrated changes over time and location, but today it less about thanksgiving, Catholicism, or its original meaning, and more about celebrating via a night of bonfires and fireworks.

FACT: Settlers exported Guy Fawkes Night to overseas colonies, including some in North America, where it was known as Pope Day. Although the tradition of celebrated died out during the revolution. Learn more about Guy Fawkes Day/Night.
