I'll start by saying discretionary income is not leftover money. It is as important as the money meant for basic needs because at times the discretionary income is bigger than the expenses for basic needs and emergency needs. Add respect to the name "discretionary income". In most cases, the income is used to save up for business; it is not necessarily meant for Bitcoin investment. Also, I would love to add to the discussion about the amount meant to start Bitcoin investment. There is no fixed amount meant, but there is a minimum amount that an investor dont need to go below, if nothing tangible will come out from the investment after a long period of time. Since you claim you have been following this thread for a long time, you should know about this. I'll start by telling you that discretionary income is left over money after taking care of your expenses. if you have less expenses, and a bigger income, then you can have larger discretionary funds available. The funds you set apart for your emergency needs comes from your discretionary income. Discretionary income is divided into 3 parts, Investment fund(which you use in buying bitcoin), Savings(which includes emergency fund) and discretionary consumption. If you go with a minimum amount to buy bitcoin, you might put yourself in a very difficult situation in the event of having little or no discretionary income for a period, maybe resulting from having higher expenses, then in that situation, what do you do? Use money meant for your expenses to ensure you meet the minimum amount? Of course this is wrong and would stress you. rather than a minimum amount, you should have a certain percentage of your discretionary income which you invest when it is available and for the periods you don't have discretionary income after attending to your expenses, then you should not invest but wait for when it would be available.

How do you sell your house to invest in bitcoin, does it mean that you have other businesses that you’re into or you have something that is giving you money, or you have other shelters where you can keep managing your life while you have sold your property all in the name of making investments, well that might not be your discretionary income, because from what I have learnt here you’re meant to invest in bitcoin with your discretionary income.
This is a practice that I will not encourage no matter what because their is no guarantee that Bitcoin will skyrocket in the future, even though it has a high potential in doing so, because we are meant to invest with what we can afford to lose, so by selling your house to invest in Bitcoin is wrong, because I can bet that such person cannot afford to lose the proceeds from the sold house, instead, such person should try to figure out his discretionary income to invest with, not by selling his home to take such risk that will keep him in constant panicking anytime the price of Bitcoin is down, so it's a practice all Bitcoin investors should avoid, unless it's a house you can afford to lose. I know about a man who had 2 houses, ranted one out and stayed in the other in different states in my country, he was staying in the house outside of his state because that's where he was working and his family was with him,the house in his hometown was rented out, during an insurgent crisis he had to jump works and returned to his own state snd to the house in his hometown leaving the other house behind, he bought that house because he was working over there but now that he wasn't working there anymore he decided to sell , he didn't invest in bitcoin of course, he probably didn't even know about bitcoin but he did open up beverages store for his wife, it won't be completely wrong to say that money was discretionary and some of it could have been used for bitcoin investment, he didn't sell it because of the investment though, he sold out of necessity. If you have two houses just as you said, I think I will encourage that but if you don't have more than one house and only because of the love you have for bitcoin, sell your own house where you are currently living, honestly I will say that you are a gambler because with this scenario it simply means that you are not ready to invest in Bitcoin at all rather than to be trader. Bitcoin investment is necessary when you have the means but forcing yourself into this investment is actually a trap because it took almost a decade of holding your Bitcoin and during that. During that you will be homeless and there's no guarantee that Bitcoin will Skyrocket in the future, I don't see any chances of winning in this gambling because it's too risky and everyone have to move away from it. For me selling one's house for bitcoin might still not be the smartest move even though the person has more than one house, the situation I talked about makes sense because the man had not reason to go back to the house and did not see himself or his family going back there so he sold it, but if he wanted to sell the house to buy bitcoin then it would make more sense to me for him to rent the house and DCA with the rent that's paid to him from his tenant, that way he will still be able to buy bitcoin regularly while still keeping his house. Anyone with a single house who even considers selling it in order to buy bitcoin should not bother to even call themselves bitcoin investors, they are gambler through and through. Indeed that is so ridiculous, how can anyone think of selling his house just to buy Bitcoin, while many do sell their Bitcoin holdings to buy houses, I advice anyone who actually wants to sell their properties to buy Bitcoin to still hold , look for a job that will pay you monthly income, then once the income start flowing you can DCA but is not a good idea to sell a house to buy Bitcoin, consider the risk management too , you owning a building you can rent it , use the money that will come out to buy Bitcoin, so delete the mindset of selling prosperities to buy Bitcoin it's not encouraging. Sometimes i don't blame any investors of selling what he knows he can be able to buy back in future and it is not a bad idea of selling off what ever that is convenient for you to sell as an investors because surely in future the property you sold can be bought back and that is why it is always advisable to only sell what you can afford to buy back in future, so the process of looking for a means of getting a job before you can start purchasing Bitcoin is not that good because by then you could have missed out so many market opportunities, so for you to grab any opportunities or taking the advantage of market price, is to sell what ever you can afford to buy back.

People can sell their properties if they don't have any use for them again and if they want to invest that money in bitcoin then it's also their choice, that money is discretionary after all so it's okay to buy bitcoin with it but if it's the kind of a property that they can rent then it's probably better to rent it out and use the money to buy bitcoin using the DCA method as long as it remains their discretionary income. For newbies it's even more of a bad idea for them to try to sell their properties to buy bitcoin, for their own sake they should be more careful. I’m glad you pointed this out, especially for people just starting out. It’s so easy to look at the big gains and want to go all in, but real life requires a safety net. Keeping a property and using steady, extra income to slowly buy into Bitcoin is a strategy that actually lets you breathe. Risk management isn't just about numbers it's about peace of mind. I think the problem here is that most people don't understand what discretionary income means, most just assume they can just split of their income and call one part of it discretionary but it sadly doesn't work that way, discretionary income is what's left after essential bills have been paid, sometimes it canske up for a bigger percentage of the whole income, most times it only accounts for a smaller percentage but this depends on the individuals expenditure and also on how much they make. People also need to understand that just because it's discretionary doesn't automatically mean it's meant for buying bitcoin, buying bitcoin isn't the primary purpose of the discretionary income and this is something most people fail to understand, it is true that we buy bitcoin and grow our bitcoin investment with our discretionary income but we also do other things with our discretionary income which includes setting up our backup funds and also our discretionary consumptions. Mind you! it is after you must have sort out your expenses then the Left over money which is your discretionary income you're to invest with and for the fact that it is a left over money doesn't mean it is useless or we don't need it because a person can use it to start up a business if they don't want to invest in Bitcoin or they use it to sort out emergency since they don't intend to invest in any scheme. And again, you don't need to have a reasonable income before investing in bitcoin, with your rank and how long you have stayed in the forum you're meant to understand that there's no fixed amount for Bitcoin purchase. even if a guy is getting 10$ discretionary they can still invest in bitcoin if they want to, maybe with time they will get promoted in Thier Job and then they can decide to increase their weekly or monthly Bitcoin purchase but the most important thing is getting started.
But there's also some probability that nothing tangible will come out from starting your business, no? I believe that in a ten year horizon, your success of getting something tangible will have a higher probability in HODLing Bitcoin than running a business for ten years. The business could also close down before the end of that ten year horizon, while Bitcoin continues exist, and continues to go up in total market value. You cannot be too sure of this, starting up a business is a 50/50 chance and holding Bitcoin for long-term is also a 50/50 chance, so you cannot actually say or be certain that if someone go into business they will fail within 10 years, and if someone keep accumulating and holding bitcoin for 10 years they will achieve profit at the end of that 10 years, no one knows how the future will look like anything can happen remember that bitcoin is highly volatile in nature. So I just want you to understand that even bitcoin investment there's no certainty or assurance that the future will actually be better for Bitcoin and that you will achieve profit, is just 50/50 chance. I'm VERY confident that buying Bitcoin, and HODLing, NOW has more than a 50/50 probability of giving the HODLer a profit in ten years than a pleb who's starting a small business today. In ten years you remember this post - Bitcoin will be priced in a $500,000 valuation per coin. That would truly be a most welcome turn of events, if only we could actually predict the price of bitcoin and how time would affect it, personally I hope you are right but that's just what it is, HOPE.

Selling a house to invest in bitcoin looks more like a desperate or rushed decision than a discretionary investment. I can understand if someone has more than one house and decides to sell one to front load a business or bitcoin may, that can be a calculated decision because the asset being sold is now a discretionary. Bitcoin has significantly outperformed real estate in the long run but because it has done well in the past doesn’t guarantee it will continue to do well even as we mostly hope and wish it will. So selling a house which can provide shelter, security and can even generate rental income may not be such a good idea. A house serves many purposes beyond it’s market value. Once it’s gone, getting it back may be very difficult if things don’t go as planned. For that reason I don’t think selling a house especially a primary residence to buy bitcoin is a prudent move. So what that a house serves multiple purposes? Houses have liabilities too. If guys have assets such as houses and/or any other assets, they can choose to keep them or sell them in part or in whole, and for sure, there are more advantages in having assets and being able to make choices about how to allocate and/or reallocate such value (and liabilities) as compared with not having them. For sure, even with bitcoin, the landscape is ongoingly changing with various governments creating more and more obstacles to cause burdens within the transacting of bitcoin, which also hampers bitcoin's value and disincentivizes normal people from wanting to either hold it or to transact in it. So, surely, the various costs and benefits and/or perceptions of future costs and benefits need to be accounted by anyone changing their allocations from one asset to another. For sure talking about selling a house that has liabilities too to hold Bitcoin can't be primary place of residence because if that is the case the next thing that might happen within a short time can be gambling. House has to be an asset not necessarily residence to avoid being pressured to trading. Howbeit, the fact that Bitcoin investment has significantly outperformed real estate business can be a trigger for someone on an economic downturn to sell his residence to invest in Bitcoin but that has to be a situation whereby you sell your house buy another house that's cheaper in a different location probably and invest the profit in Bitcoin. This is a decision that should be carried out after detailed analysis.

Since the prerequisite for investing in Bitcoin is to hold a long-term portfolio. We can see from the past history of Bitcoin that it cycles its value up and down, if someone can hold their Bitcoin for at least two cycles, they can benefit a lot from it. For example, in the 2021 cycle, we saw the highest price of Bitcoin reaching $65,000 from which the price gradually decreased to $15,000 the next year, and again in the 2024 cycle, the price of Bitcoin reached a maximum of over $125,000. In every bull market, we see the price of Bitcoin increasing for a few days from the highest price of the previous cycle. So when someone wants to invest in Bitcoin, he should invest there with money that he does not need very soon, i.e. discretionary income. When a person builds an emergency fund after meeting basic needs, while also maintaining investment continuity and nurturing their portfolio over several cycles, they will benefit greatly over time.

Bitcoin has giving through major ups and downs and those who invested only what they could afford to leave untouched were generally in a much better position to ride out the volatility, having an emergency fund first and treating Bitcoin as a long term investment rather than a quick profit opportunity makes a lot sense.

Actually everyone needs to have risk management here, many people invest in Bitcoin with the intention of making sure profits, but Bitcoin will never actually bring us profits so easily, if we cannot hold Bitcoin for a long time, we will not be able to profit well from it, or the possibility of making profits is very low and the possibility of losing money will be high if we expect short-term success from Bitcoin. Bitcoin has always been volatile in nature, it has faced major price corrections many times, but investors who have been patient in the long term have benefited relatively more. So Bitcoin is a long-term investment, and here everyone must be able to hold on for the long term if they want to achieve something good, there will be major corrections, the market will be unstable, but we have to hold on to it despite everything, only then will there be a possibility of something good.

Person must not have to have emergency funds first before they can they can invest. Since person can bring out emergency funds from discretionary income, then having discretionary income first is very important. If the person do have discretionary income then the person can split their discretionary income into 3 places. Use the first portion for investing ongoingly and then the the second can be used for those important needs that man cannot do without. And the third place can be use to ongoingly invest.

Not having an emergency funds shouldn't be the reason why someone that has figured out there discretionary won't invest in bitcoin. The most important thing here is that they have been able to figure out there discretionary income. Then the issue of emergency funds can be sorted out by them setting aside some percentage of there discretionary income as emergency funds then some percentage for investing in bitcoin them the remaining percentage can be for discretionary consumption.

To seize any opportunity or take advantage of the market price, if someone thinks that they can buy back everything they have, they can sell it and bring it back. I do not agree with this logic. In my opinion, this is wrong advice. Because it can be a terrible or risky decision if it does not work out as planned later. Also, there is no guarantee when the market opportunity will actually turn into a profit. Investing in any volatile asset, including Bitcoin, can also reduce its value. So if someone sells and invests in emergency assets, things needed for employment, or important assets in daily life, they can face big problems if the market goes in the opposite direction. The idea of "being able to buy back" also depends on future income, market prices, and personal circumstances. Therefore, if there is no guarantee, there is a high chance of making mistakes and there is a higher chance of losing money instead of gaining.

The moment you can generate discretionary income, you are capable of generating emergency funds too. Emergency funds is also gotten from discretionary income, same with your reserve funds . Because discretionary income is actually the left over after taken care of your expenses, so you can also generate your savings and investments money from discretionary income, that’s why is good to know how to break down your earnings into various percentages, like for your expenses and your discretionary income too.

I agree with you, the most important before anyone can start investing is how to figure out your descretionary income, every newbies shouldn't bypass this process, because it's very important, without descretionary income you can do nothing so to whom it may concern concentrate on your descretionary income, then emergency funds should be figured out with just sometimes to back up your investment procedures, yes I really agreed on this.
What is more important for investment, is for the investor to have budget, also use what it can afford to lose that will not his household to invest..the mistake most investors make, is not to use what they can afford to and invest, if you have budget for investment, you will not bother if investment goes negative or positive...people always be curious to monitor their investment if they don't invest with what the can lose at any time...so using a fun money for investment, will not make you to be depressed if you lose it.

I disagree on your statement @ POPOLUV it's unprofessional for an investor to sell his assets and enbarck in Bitcoin investment journey, he can still rent it and the profits can still be use to invest in Bitcoin, he must not sell his properties before anyone can invest in Bitcoin, Don't make it look as if without someone selling his properties that they can't invest in Bitcoin, this your idea will scare many newbies away from investing in BTC, it will really discourage many , if you have descretionary income you can start investing in Bitcoin instead of selling your properties, you really need to erase that idea of selling your properties in your mindset because it will discourage many bigginers, and selling properties is the mindset of traders because they believe in quick profits which always lead many of them to regret in due time.

Yes, you might be right about this, but I think doing something like that is highly unlikely. Because if we sell our belongings or other items, it certainly can't be categorized as discretionary funds when we get the money. Therefore, I personally don't really agree with this. I don't think forcing investment is the right thing to do, especially when you're unemployed. In a situation like that, food and our daily lives will undoubtedly become our primary concerns. So, instead of selling items to invest in bitcoin, I personally agree that the proceeds from those sales should be used to cover our daily living expenses before we have a job and income. What's the point of investing if we can't eat? That's clearly not a good thing. So, I believe that only when we have discretionary funds can we start investing in bitcoin. But if we don't have any yet, don't invest in bitcoin or any other asset, because we simply won't be able to do so at that time.

But in my opinion, what everyone does with their investments is already done with regard to household needs. This means that household needs always come first. So when they invest towards achieving their goals I think it's no problem anymore because they have already considered all the necessities to meet their household needs so they are very worthy of doing so to achieve their goal which is to have what they targeted in investing in Bitcoin. So with a budget that is more than the needs they should do it towards their achievements because if not, it is the same as not having any income function that we have so that it is very appropriate with the idea that they have especially the way they do it is appropriate for them to do it like that for another reason if not now when else because currently from the financial side they have it is good and always exceeds the needs of the goods that are spent especially if there is money that they can do even though later they will experience losses I think that is something that must be done and they will not be disappointed with what they are experiencing even though there are losses.

Don't just agree, but try to implement it slowly and gradually. I'm sure almost everyone who frequently discusses this thread already knows that investing shouldn't be done rashly and using funds carelessly, especially if the goal is long-term. Therefore, discretionary income is absolutely essential when someone starts investing because it not only makes it easier to invest, but also makes it easier to manage expenses in life and prevent their investment assets from becoming victims of sudden difficulties. And I'm sure all investors who like to hold Bitcoin for the long term have used this method from the past until now, although each investor certainly differs in terms of the amount of income they use to invest in Bitcoin. But the important point is that they are willing to do it in the long term without feeling burdened by anything so that purchases continue to be made from week to week.

Nothing is 100% guarantee in this life sir, so we can never be too sure of the potential outcome of anything in this life. I may agree with you with your sentiment about Bitcoin that it might rise to $500k per coin in ten years time from now, but it's not written in stone that such must happen, that's why we are adviced to invest only from our discretionary income, for we not to be heartbroken or affected financially if our investment did not later go as planned. Invest in Bitcoin is less stressful than doing a business that haves it ups and downs, and if not properly managed, it might not even survive up to two years, but my point is that nothing is impossible in this life, because so many things can go right or wrong in a very short period of time. You might be right that I may be wrong in a $500k per coin prediction, it may be higher, it may be lower. BUT I'm 100% confident that as long as the Federal Reserve/Central Banks around the globe doesn't stop expanding the Money Supply, then Bitcoin will definitely be in a higher price valuation per coin than where it currently is. AT LEAST SIX DIGITS per coin, ser, is GUARANTEED. Buy the DIP, and HODL.

there are only two viable strategies for those accumulating bitcoin in my opinion. - you either consider yourself a trader which means you have to be buying the dips and each time you see a good opportunity like the correction after we hit $5500. - or you are just dumping your fiat every time you have some extra laying around and turning it into valuable bitcoin. in which case it really doesn't matter when you buy specially since that strategy is a long term one and whether you buy at $5000 or $5500 doesn't make much difference when price goes up in long run as it doesn't matter if you bought at $220 or $240 back in 2015 now that price is 25 times more!!!
Actually in bitcoin investing, is either you trade for short term profit or you buy, and hodl to make profit on the long run. But preferably, buying bitcoin, and hodl remains the best option in Bitcoin investing because it is less stressful, and more profitable compared to trading. In the case of trading, only trained people can trade bitcoin, and make profit, and even at that, they do experience losses that people who buy, and hodl rarely experience. The benefit in buying, and holding bitcoin is the reason why investors buy the dip, and sell when the bitcoin market become bullish. I have trade bitcoin in the past, though not as a professional, and the experience was not good with me because I made huge losses, but now am holding, am really having peace of mind as I anticipate long term profit.

The whole thing really depends on timing and risk taking ability. Those who managed to book a profit by selling their property in 2022 and booking a peak profit in 2024/2025 must have had the courage to do so. But not everyone has the capacity to withstand the amount of mental stress they went through during this entire period. Investing in a volatile asset like Bitcoin by selling their real estate is extremely risky. It's a good thing the cycle was in their favor otherwise they would have been on the streets. what if the bear market had been longer? I would never call selling the roof over your head and investing in Bitcoin an investment it's pure Gmbling. Credit must be given to those who endured this excitement and survived but it's better for ordinary people not to show such courage I don't see how investing in bitcoin suddenly becomes "pure gamble" merely because there are thoughts to sell property and use proceeds to buy bitcoin. Surely a person's cashflow has to be considered, and yeah, if they are using multiple years of their cashflow to invest into bitcoin at one time, then that would be a pretty large lump sum to be putting in bitcoin at one time. Many times, we talk about bitcoin investment timelines as needing to be 4-10 years or longer, so surely it could take a while for the timeline to play out and historically bitcoin's prices have tended to be volatile in the shorter timelines, which is also another reason that investment timelines of 4-10 years or longer tend to be the starting standard. Another dynamic that I frequently mention is to have a greater than 10-year investment timeline with bitcoin, unless a person has age and/or health considerations that do not allow for an ability to put money into bitcoin for 10 years or longer... and so one of the problems with the use of large proceeds (which is the value of the house that may well be several years of cash flow) is putting a lot of money into bitcoin at one time, which might not be a better way forward. There is nothing wrong with calculating expenses for needing a place to live in circumstances that the person might have had been living in the house.. so there could be comparisons about how much it was costing to live in that particular house versus what would be the costs of living in another comparable house, to the extent that a comparable house was going to be the replacement or if there might be an upgrade or downgrade in the replacement housing. By the way, anyone who receives a lump sum would have options to 1) invest right away, 2) defer by time (DCA) and/or 3) defer by price (buy on dips that might not happen), and the lump sum may or may not be the only source of funds in terms of future buy to the extent that the guy might have anticipated future income flow, too. I agree with you I also think that the thesis of a 4-10 year or longer timeline for Bitcoin is absolutely correct. but what i wanted to emphasize in my previous post is that (depending on the state of mind of the person and the type of asset being sold) pouring a large lump sum into Bitcoin at once like selling a property is not the right strategy. But in reality a large part of those who come to Bitcoin by selling property fall victim to this Lumpsum mistake by taking advantage of the hype or bull market. Housing or one's own home is not just a financial asset. It is a fundamental right and a symbol of family security. When someone sells the roof over their head and invests in Bitcoin Emotional and mental stress plays a much bigger role than mathematical calculations. If the market was down during the deal making period (like 2022 to 2024/2025) and a common man sold his house and invested the money in Bitcoin the two way mental and financial pressure that would have been created on him would be enough to break him mentally. There is certainly an opportunity to break the lump sum amount and do dca strategically as you mentioned. But when someone sells their only sure long term shelter and goes all-in on Bitcoin where the future cycle may not go in their favor, that decision seems closer to speculation or gambling than investment to me.The strategies you have given (like calculating cash flow, comparing living costs or dividing funds into DCA) are very ideal. If one can follow these rules the risk is greatly reduced. But in the case of a common man emotions and the greed for immediate profit trump these logical calculations. Updated from previous mistaken quoted post.

I don't get it right, how do you really mean that the prerequisite for investing in Bitcoin is to hold a long-term portfolio?. Asking because when you say "prerequisite" you are referring to what you are supposed to have before starting and long-term portfolio is the outcome of Bitcoin investment. Well if you are trying to say that the best thing to do in Bitcoin is to invest which is holding a long-term portfolio that's true. Talking about the prerequisite for investing in Bitcoin discretionary funds is a major prerequisite and altogether common sense is a prerequisite for investing in Bitcoin.
