I read the whole thread, so it is just good old copy-paste reports now taken to the level of perfection we have never seen before. I reported a dozen users copy-pasting my own posts a few times in the past and it would be interesting to see how many I missed. And while we are at it, is it possible to compile a list of members most often plagiarized? I guess that would give us a damn good and unbiased metric of how valuable someone's posts are

But why now and why so many? Did they develop some automatic tool to check members' posts en masse, then moderators check suspicious posts manually and give out bans as required? Are there any false reports?
Asked same question here you can read comments below my question. My question is why now?
And yes all reports are reviewed manually by moderators and given ban based on the usefulness of the accounts to the forum. Some get temporary 60days ban and signature ban between 1-2years while others get permanent ban. Will the mods going to manually erase those copied posts as well? Plagiarism is hard to dispute. If its copy-pasting is the violation, sanction must be permaban. Why now? Well its time for bitcointalk.org to claim the first page result when googling "Bitcoin", plagiarism I think prevents this from happening. |

Most definitely not, although moderators have access to deleting forum users (worthless) post none have admitted to deleting reported post involving plagiarism beside those post usually serves as a reference in case they decide to denial commiting plagiarism when appealing their ban. If the offenders are among the favoured few recieving less punishment (temporary ban) then it's their duty to request for the reported post and clean up their account. |

Moderators cant ban Users , only Global Mods and admins as far i know !
Patrollers (at one point, the majority of mods were patrollers -- moderators of newbies) can ban Brand New and Newbie accounts. Regular mods can ban Newbies if they haven't been whitelisted by another mod, don't have Copper membership (IIRC), and have less than 150 posts or less than 30 posts if they have earned at least 1 merit. |

Based on some of the copy/paste cases I've seen... the quality of what was being copied wasn't particularly good or "valuable". In a lot of cases it looked like "pick a random post (or posts) from a few posts/pages earlier -> Ctrl+C -> Ctrl+V". So, I doubt this metric will be as useful as you think. |

Also, many still think that Bitcoin is some kind of scam scheme and are afraid of volatility and aren't willing to accept the risk. I beleive this will change with time but we also need more education and awarness campaigns about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general.

i think most of these people just look for semi relevant posts with decent english without too much regard for who theyre copying off of. a lot of the earlier cases i noticed when the forum was starting to catch onto the plagiarism problem involved them copying a reply post from 50 pages back in a megathread and just changing the formatting to make it look different. this way the post would seem relevant and constructive, but most people could catch on with smaller threads if they were reading through it. |

Here's a post by theymos about the situation with the bans and who it is directed against: Merely forgetting to quote things is not plagiarism, and if we read it that way, you probably won't be banned at all. For it to plagiarism, you have to have the intention of passing the text off as an original work by you. In all of these recent cases (unless we make a mistake, which is rare), it's extremely obvious in context that the person is copy/pasting to make money. Usually they're copy/pasting someone else's post and not adding anything else, in fact, which makes it very clear. All of the recent cases are ~exactly like this, since this is what the bot looks for. (Thank you to the bot designer!) If at any point you had a mindset where you'd treat the forum like a dumping ground by worthlessly copy/pasting other people's posts in order to make a tiny amount of money, then my default reaction is GTFO, and you have quite an uphill battle to earn even a 2-year sigban instead. No warnings, no statute of limitations. I know of one case where someone was banned for plagiarism in the recent massacre, but a very careful reading of the context showed that the person actually did just forget to quote, and by "quoting" the post they were expressing an actual point even if it constituted their entire post. This person was unbanned without any sigban, since this isn't plagiarism. |

Forum had many users violating the rules and regulations. This is why a good list of banned users are too good to know that somehow the admin are doing their best to eradicate copy and pasting habit of users that are good for nothing posters. I can't wait to see how the forum will go through after this huge waves of ban with users that violates the forum rules. I can sense that there will be a better future ahead on the forum without these users that are only copy and pasting post. I just expect that hopefully the forum will be a good place to discuss cryptocurrency in the near future. |
