Ireland has just proved everyone why there needs to be two or three divisions in test cricket. If they perform in such a pathetic manner against New Zealand, what will happen if they are allowed to play against India or Australia? On the other hand, the ICC is moving in the other direction. They have just abolished the second division in test cricket, and have added the three countries there (Ireland, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe) to the World Test Championship. This will mean more one-sided and meaningless matches and accelerated death of test cricket as a format.

These guys are full members and gets a % of funding from the ICC so they deserve these matches, even if they shit their bed.

If not then take their full membership and cut their funding. We both know this won't happen in any scenario so no solution except giving them more matches.

Fight back by lower order of Irish team was very heartening, but recovery alliances cannot afford to lose higher ranking wickets at such combination of rapid bowling. In the first innings, they managed to score only 179 runs. In the first innings, five of Ireland's batsmen were dismissed for ducks. Except for Andy McBrine's 70 runs and Mark Adair's 40 runs, no other batsman could bat very well. 2 division/ relegation system is in talk but ECB along with lower ranking teams are in opposition. Likes of ban, pak, sl and wi opposition was obvious but ECB joined it as well and their argument is what if they also drop down to lower tier?

There's also discussion about keeping marquee series like bgt, ashes and freedom trophy seperate if big team drops down in ranking.

The ICC is trying to bring small and weak countries on stream, even though this is not easy, but they are doing a good job of arranging games like this. In the last few years, the difference in quality has been widening, and many countries are losing their best in test format. This is going to be a problem for the ICC and relative countries.

Just the Big 3 have enough chance of survival, but having a solid strategy and more matches can do things to improve. In this match, Ireland is not having a good performance, and chances are high they could lose this match by a big margin, but this could be good for Ireland they will have experience for the future, while New Zealand will also have enough practice for the England test matches.

I personally have a lot of doubts about their system or process through which they are trying to bring maybe small or weak teams to the main stream.
The reason is that the matches they are bringing to the routine here are basically one team is an underdog team and the other is a very strong team. And here most of the viewers are able to predict which team will actually win and since these matches will be zero competitive, people will also have less interest.
But on the other hand, if there was a fight between weak teams and weak teams or a fight with a team that is a little stronger than the weak team, then maybe those matches would be enjoyable.

I believe many teams actually want and prefer the same scheduling before turning up for encounters in hostile and unknown conditions. Warm up matches do fill the gap but it lacks the intensity and hunger to win a game.
