Man City and Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal for Julian Alvarez worth up to £81m (€95m).

Talks have been progressing well between the clubs over the last 24 hours. Atletico will pay £64m up front (€75m) with a further £17m of potential add-ons (€20m), which will be a record sale for City.

It represents a huge profit on the £14m the Premier League champions paid River Plate for the Argentina forward in January 2022.

Personal terms still have to be agreed, although this is not expected to be a problem.

Alvarez has made 103 appearances for City since arriving at the Etihad Stadium two and a half years ago, scoring 36 goals.

The Argentine international won two Premier League titles, as well as the FA Cup, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup titles all in 2023.

During his time at City, he also won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, as well as the Copa America earlier this year.

And I think this is the best player that Atletico Madrid can finally get. We have seen the qualities of Julian Alvarez. He is a player who actually deserves to be the main player at a club. In Man City he may not be able to take on that role because of Haaland. But at Atletico Madrid I think Julian Alvarez will immediately become the most important player there. I hope he can contribute very well there. And in Laliga he will gain valuable new experience. And I think that's the point where his career will peak. Julian Alvarez leaving Manchester City to Atletico Madrid is the best decision he has made for himself. This will help propel his career more because he’s not a second choice player that he’s been used for at Manchester City. He is a great striker and for all the many times he has come in as substitute for Manchester City, he always change the game in their favour and brings victory to the team. At Atletico Madrid, he’ll be a top striker for Atletico and with his addition to the squad, I see a more tougher and productive Atletico Madrid in the next season.
