They are not going to cancel it. And I don't think that postponing the event may cause huge losses. There is still no word from the IOC regarding any potential postponement. The games are supposed to begin on 24th July 2020, and they may be hoping that the COVID 19 situation may get resolved before that. We still have 4 months and there is a good chance that the pandemic may get contained before the scheduled start date.

Japan is amongst the best economy in the world, I think a cancellation or postponement will be a good option for now instead of allowing it as schedule. The game itself will be a disaster for committee to check everyone, athletes and fans for the corona virus symptoms.

So the logical choice will be to push it on a later date when everything has settled down or at least everyone feel safe to attend the games.

There could be a lot of pressures to Japan to cancel this years game, yes they've already committed themselves by spending huge amount of money here, but they have to take into consideration the overall health of everyone involved in this game. They themselves quarantined a cruise ship and someone has tested positive.

Safety of the athletes should come first, and besides if by March the outbreak is still not contained, then I'm sure there could be some nations who are not going to send their athletes in fear of getting the virus. Just imagine if an athlete contacted it, was asymptomatic for the first two weeks still healthy but after the incubation period, signs started to show up?

So spread will be very fast, the covid-19 epidemic has really taken a toll for every major sports event. So for the Olympics, I think for everyone's safety, they should just reschedule it to prevent potential spread as this is the main concern right now.

I hardly can see how Olympics can happen on planned date, even if spread of virus will be stopped soon. There is another problem which wasn't mentioned yet. Probably half of athletes still haven't qualified to Olympics. Most of qualification tournaments were planned to happen now and in next few months. And these tournaments won't happen soon for obvious reasons. So, this is another reason why Olympics probably will be moved to new date, maybe later this year or in 2021.

The best option right now because the pandemic is not going down, is to set the Olympic next year, there's no guaranty that everything will be ok in July, and if they decide to push through I doubt countries will have the confidence to send their athletes, they need to clean the air of uncertainty, that no one will be infected, audiences and athletes.

@Yaunfitda in my personal opinion Japan should immediately suspend Olympic preparations, and while I do understand that such a move will have a huge impact on their economy, but it’s necessary as they’ll be able to safe countless human life’s which is more important than saving money.

I also suspect that countries will not send their delegations because of fear of the virus.

Yes, I do agree that for the time being, the Olympic games should be suspended by Japan. As we have said, safety first attitude. It's just four months from now at the air of uncertainty is still not clear yet, on the contrary, the victims numbers are growing like everyday.

BTW, there is some positive signs, China Basketball league planning to resume season in start of April and asking foreign players to return. Now China is probably safer place than Europe:

Even if they postpone it or cancel it, I am pretty sure the next time there is Olympics it will still be in Japan. So, they are basically postponing the profits for them, not cancelling it. Plus it is even a good investment for them, if you make some sort of investment to the games from 2015 to 2020 you are spending that money without inflation, however if you did the Olympics today you will be getting money of 2020, yet if you do it in 2021 you will earn 2021 prices, usually due to inflation there will be some increase for sure.

According to Italians media they are now talking about postponing the games later this year is not clear if they are talking about posting later this year or to 2021.

There is no way that the Olympics will be cancelled completely and it will be extended to next year as the amount of money spent to construct and prepare is huge by the host nation and the amount of preparation every athlete does just to compete in the grand stage is really huge and only during war they cancelled the events altogether but these are extraordinary situations but the war is against Virus and the entire humanity is fighting against it and considering that we will see the Olympics when the virus is contained.

If they will postpone Tokyo's games in winter we will have other problems like the climate and problems in some sports like Basketball games when the season is running and the player cannot leave NBA or other leagues for economical reasons.


This is not an easy task to complete.

There has been a major announcement by the IOC, and now they have decided to postpone the Olympics by a year which is sad news for the organisers but a welcome relief to all the participating countries. Also I acknowledge that postponing this event would have been a painful decision for them, but these are extraordinary times and this decision will help the sport as all countries will now be able to participate in the Olympics next year.

I agree that this is really a painful decision, they have work so hard for this years summer olympics, but I guess at this point, this is no longer the priority as the world is really taking a shit storm in covid-19. This is already like choosing the life of the athletes and the host country, so I think it is already a smart decision to postponed the big event. We can always have the olympics but we only have one life. So this is really great decision!
