Do you think that the pandemic would go on for another year? If that happens, then we can expect a few million deaths from it. But indications are that a vaccine will be available by the end of this year. 4 of the potential vaccines have now entered the final phase of clinical trials (two from China and the other two from AstraZeneca and Moderna). So hopefully by July next year, we'll be having zero new cases.
Even if vaccine will be found, I think it's not worth to expect that there will be zero new cases then. First of all, it's not possible that over 7 billion people will be vaccinated by July next year. Some people aren't even going to accept vaccine because it may be harmful for their health or they are just anti-vaxers.
And vaccine can't be 100% effective, so it's likely covid-19 will stay with us for long. We have vaccine for flu, but this virus is still here and new kind of vaccine is needed every year. So, I'm a bit sceptical about covid-19 vaccine, I doubt it's going to be panacea.

I am fairly confident that they will find a working vaccine in the beginning of next year as all pharmaceutical companies are putting huge efforts in it. But as you mention, there will be a lot of people who will be afraid of the vaccine or who simply don't want to take it. So probably in July 2021, the virus will still be around. One thing is certain; the experience around the Olympic games will be totally different.

BIG WINNER!

Well.. that is how vaccines against viruses work. Anti-viral vaccines can never be 100% effective, because they mutate so often. So as per the experts, if any of the prospective vaccines are more than 70% effective, they will be successful in reducing the spread of the pandemic. Now this is going to be a slow process. Even after everyone is vaccinated, we will be having new cases. But the number of new infections will decline with every passing day, and after a few months the pandemic will be eradicated.

And yes the Philippines just have 1 sure competitor to enter for this 2020 Summer Olympics that is on the Men's Pole vault I guess because of lack of sponsor but let's just wait for the update and verification.

I was surprised that the Philippines, somehow will send only one to the Olympics. We need to wait and see as there were many athletes that gave the Philippines medals like in gymnastics and women's weightlifting. Also the lack of a solid sports program has been the problem for the country for a long time and hopefully with the creation of a National Academy of Sports, the country will be able to compete with the world by producing highly trained athletes.

I am actually very concerned with how the people in the Philippines will react to the vaccine. Many if not most of the people I have talked to and also people on the news being shown on TV and heard on the radio, are weary of the vaccine and would like to skip the initial vaccination and does not want to participate. Not because they are anti-vaxxers. But because of an incident during the administration of Benigno Aquino Jr. where school children received a prototype vaccine called Dengvaxia, and as per the prosecution has claimed the lives of more than 100 children. No case was filed but the media was so convincing that it made an impact to public opinion and made many change their minds in being the first ones to try the vaccine for Covid 19.

It is a reality that many will be cautious in taking these vaccination in the beginning as there are mishaps in the past and i am hearing about the Philippines situation for the first time but it is awful to see these kind of mishaps happen and the responsible companies should be shut down and people responsible should be brought to justice as cruelty level is beyond comprehension. I think Japan is doing really well against the pandemic and all they need to do is to test everyone like they did with the UFC in fight island if they are planning to conduct the Olympics next year.

The quicker we have better so that the spread will come under control and things will start to get normal. 23rd July 2021 the Olympics begin and from now on close to a year. If things do not get fully resolve or say to a greater extent than we might see another postponement of the Olympic dates again though at present it seems to be unlikely.

I don't think it'll be a problem, if the vaccine is successful news about its positive result will already be circling aroung the world before the vaccine even reaches the Philippines. also, thousands or maybe millions will probably have already got injected by the vaccine and by the time it reaches the philippines people will probably already be assured by its reputation(except for anti-vaxxers, I guess.)

It really is a challenge here from what I heard from many people. Many are being afraid to take the vaccine. But common sense would dictate that if the vaccine is proved to be successful without any side effects then there might be a change of opinion for those Filipinos who is initially hesitant of the vaccine. All we need now is to definitely wait patiently for the laboratories to diligently do their work - no rush hopefully. So that they would be able to deliver the needed vaccines to as many people as possible.

I want to share this video about the supposedly fireworks that we could have seen if the Olympics push through this 2020.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBhfC2CpmXc

It's really amazing if we are going to see this live, hopefully next year.

Filipinos are more skeptical about the vaccine, because a mass-vaccination program against Dengue fever which was conducted a few years ago caused more harm than good. Long-term side effects from the vaccines may not be noticed immediately. They may get noted only after a few years, or even after a few decades. You can search about the 2017 Dengvaxia scandal in the Philippines.

Even the summer Olympics have been targeted by cyber actors as well.

Tokyo Olympics: Russian hackers targeted Games, UK says.

We don't know what incentives these hackers will get from breaching, except disrupting it, what a kill joy.

^^, Yes, the only reason is to disrupt nothing else, unless those are state sponsored hacking, then maybe those groups are looking for something to leverage in the future. So it doesn't really make sense to target the Summer Olympics in Japan, it's once of a lifetime experience for athletes and held only every four years.

In any case, this has uncovered already, so hopefully, the organisers, will be more careful next time so that no un towards incident will occur during the game itself next year, it if will be push through.

This is s worldwide competition, there's lot they can get when hacking this special event,  but these people does not only target the olympic, per the article you shared, it's stated.
Quote

The group sought to disrupt the 2018 Winter Olympics, the 2017 French presidential election, and Ukraine's power grid, US prosecutors said.

It is kind of funny to see the blame put on Russian Hackers all the time, what happened here i bet there is no damage nor the article is specifically telling that they hacked something, these are just speculations and nothing else and with the US elections coming up i am sure there will be another propaganda telling that the elections were manipulated by the Russian Hackers just like last time  Cheesy.

Olympics: Bach expresses confidence in Tokyo Games even as virus cases surge.

Quote
TOKYO (Reuters) - International Olympic Committee (IOC) chief Thomas Bach expressed confidence on Monday that the Tokyo Games will be held successfully next year, even allowing spectators, despite a sharp rise in coronavirus infections worldwide.

The President of IOC was in Japan recently so he issued a statement that the Summer Olympics could be held in 2021 with fans being allowed to watch the game. However, he is banking on that idea that a vaccine could have been discovered next year, so with that said, the Games is still uncertain next year.

It is good to be optimistic in these situation, there is no way that the fans would be allowed in the arena if the vaccine is not developed and if there is a vaccine then everyone going for the Olympics will be getting a shot and the Japanese government will make sure that everything goes smoothly, if not it is hard to see that happening.

Phase 3 trials are over for two of the vaccines (Moderna/National Institutes of Health and Pfizer/BioNTech). They have already announced that their vaccines will be available in the market by next month. As per the revised schedule, Olympics will start on 23rd July 2021. We still have time of around 8 months and I hope that the pandemic will be contained by then.

I wouldn't say so. If you watched sports competitions from Japan recently, you would see that they already allow fans to watch it, offcourse only limited numbers. So, if situation won't become significantly worse in Japan until July, I think we will see some spectators allowed to visit events. Question, will they allow foreign tourists to watch Olympics, I think it's less likely.
And even if vaccine will be fully developped until next dummer, there is no chance that huge part of population will be vaccinated until Olympics.

I live in Japan and I dont see this happening. Cancelled or no spectators is very likely.

They think about opening for tourist travels (as a test) from april, and in July you want to host hundred thousands of people? Never happening.

If there are no spectators allowed what would be the gain for Japan? Basically nothing.

Depends.
By this summer we will probably have some vaccines, and this will can change a lot.
They can even be postponed 1 more year as far we can know it.

It's true Japan, if they will have no people at the stadiums will earn almost nothing but money, are already spent on the building so in the end, it will not change a lot, am I wrong?

Olympics games are somewhat a business, an opportunity for the host country to make money or at least break even as far as expenses goes. So I doubt that they will allow the Olympics without fans and tourist. So it means that they will only push through when everything has settled down, specially the vaccines. So yes, it might not happen next year, and could be postponed up to 2022.
