It's sad to see news that Olympic Games will be played without spectators. It won't be easy to watch competition in empty stadiums, especially after watching EURO 2020 in almost full stadiums and great atmosphere. For athletes it also won't be easy to compete without any support. Wouldn't be surprised if it will be worst Olympic Games ever.

For sure without fans around, the games will be dry as compare to previous Olympics. There are other sports though around the world that allowed fans to watch the game like you have said. So I agree that it will be sad to see the biggest sporting events in Japan without fans cheering for each respecting countries. Could be the worst Olympics, but health of the athletes comes first.

Japan authorities didn't decide that for the health of the athletes but to protect the health of their own people. They are really afraid to spread the virus across the population, and to import too many variant cases, including the Indian one which is the most dangerous variant to date while vaccines aren't able to stop it.

I think a country that is really afraid like this shouldnt even host the olympic games! They should have given someone else to host this games. Empty stadiums are just sad even tho its a pandemic

i am not sure what is the situation in Japan but if they can allow audience who are vaccinated then there is nothing to worry because Olympics without audience will not be that entertaining and if they continue to carry on without audience it will be the first in Olympic history.

Unfortunately, they are not allowing fans as Tokyo declared state of emergency.

However, they are thinking if they can allow fans outside of Tokyo, those that are not included in the state of emergency.
Anyway, this is really saddening. First time to have Olympics without fans and spectators.

It's just that the time for transferring to another country has already been lost, and the excessive confidence of the Japanese authorities and the International Olympic Committee last year played a role, that the transfer to this year will solve all the problems with the pandemic by itself. As we can see, the pandemic continues and states are not yet able to fully cope with this problem even with the availability of vaccines. New dangerous coronavirus mutations continue to appear. Also, do not forget about public opinion in Japan, which is clearly not in favor of holding the Olympic Games. It's just that the decision has already been made, the funds for training have already been spent and we should already come to terms with this fact.

The Olympics organizer is concern about the spread of covid virus why they finally decided not to have fans watching the events. Though it is really not good as the Olympics spirit per se is missing but they don't want to sacrifice the health safety of the athletes and personnel involved. It may be the silent Olympics that they will remember but it may spare a lot of lives by doing so.

The average number of new deaths have remained in the 20-40 range for the last few weeks. More than 60% of the population has received the vaccine till now, and therefore the chances of death are low even if they get the infection. And this is the reason why England has reopened the economy. But the case with Japan is not like that. Vaccination coverage has remained low, with just 17% of the population receiving two doses of the vaccine.

The games have the potential to be the worst of our generation but to say these games could be the worst ever is an exaggeration, after all we had games like the Berlin 1936 games at Germany when the Nazi party was in power, the games planned for 1940 and 1944 were canceled because of WWII, the London 1948 games were called the austerity games due to the difficult economic times caused by the end of WWII, the 1972 Munich games were stained by a terrorist attack, the Moscow 1980 games and the 1984 Los Angeles games were boycotted by the US and USSR respectively and the Atlanta 1996 games saw another terrorist attack, so I think these games are not going to be as bad compared to those other games.

God only need to safeguard each and everyone who are part of the Tokyo Olympics. The organizers do the best, but someway few gets infected even after series testing for covid-19. An example is the recent cricket tournament between Sri Lanka and India which got postponed. The coach Grant Flower doesn't have any visit outside, but found positive and the tournament got postponed. This time with Olympics players from all around the world will come together. They have reasons to be scared of. Tens of thousands of athletes are scheduled to arrive, from every nook and corner of the world. Even if 0.01% of them are infected, in real numbers it can amount to a few dozen. And Japan has remained largely free of mutated strains such as Delta and Alpha. The primary concern among the Japanese is that these strains may now be introduced in to Japan, by the visiting athletes. And remember that Japan is especially vulnerable to COVID 19, due to their age structure (29% is aged above 65 years).

Yeah, you're right. I exaggerated things a bit. No doubt that WWII, terrorist attacks or Cold War is much worse things than absence of spectators in stands. Well, maybe it's no right to prejudice that it will be worst Olympics in our generation, but no doubt that it will be strangest Olympics we ever saw.

It is not so simple, after all countries are given years in order to organize the games and Japan is doing this while in the middle of the pandemic, as much as it pains me to say this the games need to be made smaller, the Olympic games makes the host to lose money and to build a bunch of facilities that may not see much use after it, so if we want more countries to want to host them then they need to be more profitable and this can only be achieved by reducing the number of installations that have to be constructed and reducing the sports that are part of the competition.

Europe will have soon the 4th wave with the Delta variant and we have 40% of vaccinated people everywhere in Eu.

In Japan, we have 18% of people vaccinated and 126 million of people.

It is not simple to move such a giant sporting event like Olympics from one country to another. Japan already spent many trillions of CNY in funds, to build the necessary infrastructure. Now if they move the Olympics to another country, then all these infrastructure will be wasted. And BTW, there is not a single country that is not affected by the pandemic right now. So the debate on moving the Games to another country doesn't make any sense. Japan has already made all the required arrangements and now it is not possible to make such a move.

I understand there is a lot of politics and bureaucracy regarding the sports that are part of the games and the events that take place, but I still support my point, the games are simply too big, Brazil tried to organize a World Cup and the Olympic games and part of their economic problems have to do with this as a fortune was spent on both events, however unlike the Soccer World Cup which is a profitable event and in which most Soccer loving countries do not need to build a lot of stadiums this is not true for the Olympic games and this needs to change.

I wonder how they will handle the increasing case of athletes getting infected in the athlete village. I remember reading a week ago that an athlete and 5 staff tested positive to covid and the most recent I've read is that 3 athletes were recorded to have been infected.
