It is true. But that happens, because there is a big incentive in colleges to have the best young people in athletics, gymnastics and swimming. That's why they work a lot in this area.

Already the US has equaled China in terms of gold, as both are having 6 golds each. China is slightly ahead in terms of total number of medals (15 vs 13). The biggest disappointment so far has been Russia. Right now they are at the 7th position. Looks like the inability to compete under the Russian flag and anthem had a negative impact on the Russian athletes.

One of the golds that US picked up today came from Men's 4x100m freestyle relay swimming, where they were the favorites. A surprise gold came in Women's individual foil, where Lee Kiefer made an upset victory. Another surprise win for US was the gold in Taekwondo (Women's 57kg), where once again the US athlete defeated a Russian opponent.

Don't forget the UK. They usually also perform well in athletics.
But the top 3 will almost certainly be US, China and the UK.

I don't think that the Great Britain will be able to repeat their performance of 2016. IMO, this time the first three places will be like this - 1. USA 2. China 3. Japan. Right now Japan is at no.2 position, with 7 golds. UK depends heavily on athletes of immigrant origin for the track and field events. And last time, many of them had upset victories. Right now they are at the 4th position with 3 golds, behind US, Japan and China. Given the disappointing performance by China so far, does anyone think that Japan may be able to overtake them in the medals table? China has been on the downward spiral for the last 10 years or so, and for this edition also that seems to be the case.

Considering it's not really a national sport, Croatia is winning a lot of medals in taekwondo - this is the 5th one in total and the 1st in male category.

Great news for Croatian fans!
I think we have a very good chance to win medals in more sports, like tennis, water polo, Shooting , rowing, athletics etc.
I saw a projection somewhere that Croatia could win as many as 12 medals at these Olympic Games, which would be a fantastic result for a small country.
I'm sorry that the Croatian basketball and handball team did not win a place at this Olympics.

Apart from Croatia, another Balkan team won two gold medals today. Distria Krasniqi and Nora Gjakova won gold medals in Judo, to place Kosovo at the 8th position in the medals table. Already this is the best ever performance by Kosovo. In their only other appearance (2016), they had won a solitary gold (Majlinda Kelmendi, in Women's 52 kg judo). This time also, both the medal's have come in judo (Women's 48 kg, and Women's 57 kg). What's most surprising is the fact that this time the entire contingent of Kosovo consisted of just 11 athletes.

Yeah. I'm from the UK, and I've been cheering the various athletes on today as we secured 3 golds. Tom Daley's was the best, in the diving - in his fourth Olympics
But I'm not sure our UK team is as strong this time around. We still have high hopes in the velodrome as usual, plus a few contenders dotted around other sports, but I don't think we're quite as strong in athletics as we were.

All of their medals (2 gold) came from the same sport - women's judo. I didn't knew that Kosovo was so strong in this sport. Anyway, this is their second Olympics (first time Kosovo participated in the Olympics was in 2016). I am residing in a country of 1.4 billion people, and back in 2016, we got just 2 medals (1 silver and 1 bronze). The last time my country won a gold medal was in 2008. And here we have Kosovo, nation of 1 million people that became independent a few years back winning consecutive gold medals.

Same thing discussed in early conversations with my office (we are all allowed to keep one tv on with Olympics because our boss is a big fan). These starting days are very deceptive. The real events are track (sprinting, relays etc) because there are SO many events here and the Americans really train so hard for it.

Japan might surprise everyone because of home advantage though.

It will certainly help, yes... but perhaps not as much as we might expect. A big part of home advantage is having the roar of thousands of fans cheering you on. In this strange pandemic Olympics the competitors are performing in front of rows of empty seats. But still home advantage will certainly count for something. And it will help that as host nation, Japan are allowed to compete in every event.

Wow, that's actually quite an accomplishment. I love it when small countries (especially new ones) win medals - I always root for the underdogs, especially in the Olympic tournaments.

It really is a shame that there are no fans there, I watched yesterday when Matea Jelić won her gold and she was shouting in front of empty stands. Must be hard for all the athletes.

I watched Slovenia basketball team yesterday, I feel pretty confident they will bring another medal to the Balkans. Dončić really is next level, he's already the best european basketball player of all time.

I wouldn't be surprised if Japan took second place with the most medal in the Olympics and the US in the first place at the end of the Tokyo Olympics. japan has over 500+ athletes competing for them in the Olympics while the US has over 600+ competing in the Olympics.

I just want to add that the Philippines Finally got a Gold medal after being known as a country with the most medals without gold for a long time.
