Definitely that's because of greed and also trying to cut back their losses. I've found that when gambling and playing games of chance, the only way to preserve money and not play until all your money is gone, is to set a pre-determined LIMIT. If you just play until you are tired or run out of money then you will surely run out of it.

As people who could help themselves wouldn't become addicts in the first place. With that said, though, I can't agree that greed is at the root of the gambling addiction. Addiction works on a physiological level (think a knee-jerk reaction here) while greed is an entirely conscious phenomenon
