Quick update, the first prototype is ready. I'm just waiting on final testing data and configuration from the power supply testing before I program the VRMs on it and send it off to ChipGeek on Monday for firmware development.

Testing has gone well so far, despite a couple setbacks. I only need to add in another big power block. I'm limited to 185A at 0.9V right now, which should be enough to push the chip past 700GH/s based on what HF saw with their Evo, but I want to make sure it's stable past that.
Performance has been good at 185A, and the VRM stays reasonably cool. In a worst case scenario with the board just sitting flat on a desk with not gap under the board and no airflow, the mosfet temp stabilized at 80C as measured with thermal imaging.

Will you be doing any refurb , trade-in of the original HF boards .... I send you my old board with chip -> pay you $$$ -> you send me a new Habanero Board ?

Wow, it's been too long since the last update.
So, a new post is up on the Pepper Mining website, load testing on the VRM is now complete to the point where I feel good going ahead with the design as is. While I again maxed out my testing apparatus which is preventing me from testing to the point of failure, I increased the output to 286A at 1V. I was more than a little tempted to take the time to scrounge up more high power resistors to get it up to 300A just to have the round numbers, I'll stop here for now.
That's a pretty huge number that I can't see anyone hitting in normal or even extreme use (it would be over 1kW to remove from the chip!) but it's cool to see how far it can go.

In other news, I just got an email from FedEx 5 minutes ago that the first board I sent down to ChipGeek was signed for, so hopefully we'll get hashing here shortly.

It's probably not worth it, unless the board you have is dead but the chip is still good. We'd have to remove the old chip, reball it, and mount it on an entirely new board. While it might be a little cheaper than just buying a Habanero, it wouldn't be worth it given you have to give up 400GH/s you currently have to do so.

Tiny bit of news for this wednesday from Mr Treal



Since my last post I have been able to get another DC load installed on the VRM. which has allowed me to really push the VRM closer to its limits. With the new resistor bank in place, the VRM is outputting 286A at 1V.  .. http://peppermining.com/vrmtesting2/

It's not an off the shelf converter in the same vein as what KnC uses, it's a custom 6 phase one based around the IR3550 PowIRStage devices.

I'm almost sure you'll need water cooling. While you might be able to hash with an air cooler, it will be severely throttled. There's just no air cooler I know of that can move 500W+ out with an acceptable delta-T

Stupid question time ... since you have 4 PCI-E connector what type of Power supply are you recommending? I don't think I've seen an estimated power draw yet but do you think a standard PC 700W PS with PCI-E splitters would work?

Hopefully not.
While testing needs to be done to see how far it can be pushed, we're expecting numbers in at least the same ballpark as what HashFast has been claiming for their Evo board. Look at having about 1J/GH if it's pushed up to 700GH/s, so I would budget a PSU in the 850W class or up. I wouldn't run using PCIe splitters.
