Peter Thiel vs. Michael Saylor: Crypto treasury bet or bubble?
Tech billionaires Peter Thiel and Michael Saylor have different approaches to crypto, which are reflected in how they invest in the space.

Tech billionaires Peter Thiel and Michael Saylor are establishing crypto company treasuries, but some financial observers note that their strategies could pose significant risk.

Both Thiel and Saylor have poured substantial capital into cryptocurrencies through their respective firms and investment vehicles: Saylor, with his software firm Strategy’s frequent Bitcoin
buys, and Thiel, through venture capital investments in crypto firms, and his exchange, Bullish, which went public earlier in August.
Source link: https://cointelegraph.com/news/peter-thiel-michael-saylor-crypto-treasury-bet-bubble

Of these two people, Michael Saylor's Bitcoin investment is the best, which is loved by every investor. You look and think that hundreds of treasury companies are holding Bitcoin just by looking at the Bitcoin holding of the MSTR company. It is possible to achieve the fastest success with Bitcoin alone, as an example, Michael Saylor's Bitcoin policy and strategy are followed by all people.

That is interesting if they might be considered to be competing against one another.

Saylor mostly bitcoin based and Thiel diversifying into various tech sector ideas that include bitcoin, ether and some various other companies and projects. Maybe Thiel's fund is also going to be more actively managed in terms of getting in and out and Saylor will be attempting to continue to add to just bitcoin or bitcoin derivatives that his company creates.

Let's see how it goes.. especially if we might look at a cycle or two down the road.. and whether they are building and/or growing at similar rates or different rates.

Thiel is playing on different route for diversifying since maybe he's skeptical and have this thoughts that he should not put all his egg in one basket, but Saylor focus solely on Bitcoin.

Right now Thiel is confirmed still holding Bitcoin but there's no evidence that he aggressively accumulating Bitcoin the same as what MicroStrategy did. But It will be cool to see them publicly announce that they are accumulating to same as what Saylor did since provably there's lots of people will get hype on those actions they have done.

Lets see more from them if Thiel would do some big moves and try to compete with Saylor.

However, what we don't know is when they will sell, both Saylor and Thiel, because for a company to be profitable, there needs to be recorded profits, so it's certain that they won't hold on to all their Bitcoin until they die. They will definitely sell, but we won't know when that will be.
Now this is the thing. Strategy is built to rely on Bitcoin and be a treasury company which shouldn't sell
Cause if they do, it means they plan on going out of business because it's going to affect investors confidence
They would gain more from just holding and accumulating for now. Maybe in the future they may choose to use the coins for other service rather than service
Maybe a lending service with interest. Anything can happen but for now they are and need to keep holding.

If the goal is to have long-term business innovation in bitcoin, whether it be a product or service, then the main requirement in utilizing their bitcoin is that they must continue to hold it, and that becomes their main obligation.

By owning bitcoin, they gain strong public trust to start a business, but the further away the type of business is, the more questions there will be about its management.
Or will they simply be strong long-term Bitcoin holders? In my opinion, I think they will sell it, even though we don't know that for sure, but not their entire holdings. Perhaps only a small portion of their holdings will be sold over the next two or three decades.

Rationality is also needed to look at this in terms of the probability of actions that will be taken.
You raise a fair point though , but I  still don’t fully agree with the assumption that they will inevitably sell even a small portion in the long term. The model they are running is closer to a corporate treasury strategy rather than a short term business play. If they frame their Bitcoin as a core reserve asset, selling even in small amounts can create a signal that weakens their positioning as a long term holder.........
Instead, what looks more realistic is them leveraging Bitcoin without selling it. As adoption deepens, financial instruments around Bitcoin (for example custody, lending, collateralized borrowing) will give them liquidity without liquidation. That way, they can still meet business demands while protecting investor confidence

Given the poor performances for STRC, they raised annual yield by 100 bps.

Poor performances?

It may be a poor return for what was expected, but a security that was launched on July 29 for $90, which in just over a month, with little volatility as it is August, is trading at almost $98, I would not call a poor return. That return within the markets it is trying to compete with, such as coupon-paying bonds or stable companies that pay dividends, is huge, massive.

What I think Saylor wants to do is accelerate the arrival of the price at $100 because from there on, everything that goes up will be sold in STRC ATMs to replace MSTR ATMs.

Exactly.
I mean poor performance is the fact that it didn’t reach 100, as this would be considered a “neutral” level that wouldn’t impact on the life cycle of the stock.
This quarter the performance wasn’t good, so Strategy raised their Dividend Yield target, that’s it.

MSTR may be added to the  S&P 500 this Friday
https://news.bitcoin.com/michael-saylors-strategy-may-enter-the-sp-500-as-early-as-friday/

I believe there may be some delay like Tesla experienced
But If it does get included then it changes everything
The stock price will go off the roof and strategy would have money to buy more
Especially from investors who owns S&P 500 funds and could even help improve their image.

Floodgates Starting To Open’—Bitcoin Is Suddenly Braced For A Massive Earthquake
Strategy chief executive Michael Saylor has inspired a flood of copycat bitcoin acquisition companies, helping to support the bitcoin price.

Strategy, and its $70 billion worth of 630,000 bitcoin, could on Friday be added to the S&P 500 stock market index.
In December last year, Strategy, which Saylor pivoted from an enterprise software company to a bitcoin acquisition vehicle in 2020, was added to the Nasdaq 100 in a move that confounded some skeptics.

Source link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2025/09/04/floodgates-starting-to-open-bitcoin-is-suddenly-braced-for-a-massive-earthquake/

Michael Saylor never thinks about the Bitcoin price situation, he only thinks about collecting Bitcoin and how to keep his Bitcoin holdings alive for a long time. When the Bitcoin price is dumping, he focuses more on Bitcoin, because he is buying Bitcoin holdings every week. He buys Bitcoin dips as a result of buying Bitcoin according to the DCA method on a weekly basis, and he compares it to a flood.

Michael Saylor’s Strategy Snubbed by S&P 500 Amid Robinhood's Surprise Inclusion

Michael Saylor's MSTR was rejected by the S&P500 on Friday, September 5th, after a long-awaited stay, and was simultaneously included in the Robinhood S&P500. Michael Saylor and MSTR investors were certainly expecting MSTR to be included in the S&P 500, and although MSTR met all the S&P 500 criteria, it ultimately failed to make the S&P 500. The stock's market price fell 3% after the MSTR was rejected by the S&P 500, while the company's shares rose 7% after the Robinhood stock closed.

However, the S&P500's firing of Michael Saylor will not have any impact on the Bitcoin market, but there may be some changes in the price of MSTR.

It simply met all the criteria, but inclusion is not automatic, unlike the Nasdaq 100 index. In the latter, a company only needs to meet the criteria to be included in the index, whereas in the S&P 500 there is a board that reviews it and decides whether or not to include the company. Tesla already experienced this situation, meeting the criteria but not being included, and other companies have as well. I guess the board is made up of traditional people and Strategy's business model is too innovative for them.

But It will be cool to see them publicly announce that they are accumulating to same as what Saylor did since provably there's lots of people will get hype on those actions they have done.

Lets see more from them if Thiel would do some big moves and try to compete with Saylor.
Well, I think the main difference is a function of investment philosophy. Saylor is tunnel visioned on Bitcoin, which he regards almost as a corporate reserve asset. His plan is simple: accumulate, long-term hold, and wait while Bitcoin's value proposition unfolds. This solution is easy for others to emulate and has made MicroStrategy a clear example of a Bitcoin first corporate treasury.

Thiel, by contrast, is going a more diversified approach. However, by diversifying and investing in various cryptocurrency projects and blockchain-based startups, he is spreading risk, creating room for innovation, and potentially developing an ecosystem beyond Bitcoin. This plan may not wow headlines in the short term, but could potentially pay off if emerging crypto technologies explode.

It should also be noted that Saylor's approach involves a great deal of conviction and patience, whereas Thiel's approach involves thorough research and active management. There's something for normal investors to learn from both sides: Saylor teaches the power of staying focused to build wealth, and Thiel assured us of the value of diversification and exposure to broader innovation in crypto. I'd be interested in seeing how their plans compare next cycle as well, and if Thiel starts to ramp Bitcoin exposure it would be a massive market catalyst.

The bigger Microstrategy grows in market capitalisation, the more difficult the exclusion will be justifiable.
It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. We will have another reshuffle in the future. If Strategy continues to be profitable, for sure, there will be space to include them.
Buy the dip inthe meantime.

Crypto winter would justify their strength. The S&P committee would have no reason to deny them
If they perform relatively well even in winter.

The market Cap isn't really the issue but the fact that it's a new venture
And may require further observations.

I guess that another couple of quarters in profit for MSTR, something not too difficult, if BTC does what we all expect, and for sure the committee won’t be able to deny for too long.
Being included in the SPX doesn’t mean that the stocks cannot have bad quarters.

This simple sentence caught my attention, equating the patterns to investing with what’s obtainable in a race. It very much sums it up and speaks more of patience and endurance. You’ll be patient to watch the crypto winter tire out while enduring the mixed emotions that comes with the FOMO of the time but, that wouldn’t bother micro strategy much, as I find it an ease to wash off as, the profits from a long term of accumulation would obviously shadow the loss of a more recent investment and the history it’s had with it would prompt them to buy more and gain even more when it pumps.

It doesn't matter the amount they could buy in a month, what matters most is their consistency in buying bitcoin every month since November 2024, they haven't missed any month without buying so it's surely a good strategy for them because while they might be buying at high price, they will also meet the DIP in some months which is an added advantage to maximize their profits.

Currently the executive chairman of MicroStrategy has been added to Bloomberg's billionaires list and we can even see that he has already made it into the top 500, he now occupies the 491th place among all these rich people perhaps his Bitcoin purchases will continue and his wealth growth will improve, and he will gradually leave the rest behind. In fact the root of this person's success is his regular purchase of Bitcoin because the success of his company is also his success, which is why he is now on the list of rich people. So far we have only heard the story of Satoshi Nakamoto and seen him constantly surpassing the rich. Maybe from now on, the journey of the CEO of this company will begin in the same way. It is true that he has come to this position because of his technical knowledge.

Was it justifiable in the first place?

If you look what companies were included and companies that already are on S&P, you might get the same feeling as me.
For instance, Robinhood was added, but it's actually worth over 5 billion less than Strategy.
Last month they added Interactive Brokers - a Company worth 100 billion, pretty much the value of MSTR, so it's not really about the numbers.

Also, there's a lot of companies worth much less than Strategy happily taking a spot. Some examples:

Charles River Laboratories International, worth only 8 billion. 12 times less than MSTR!
LKQ - another 8B company... and there's more.
Not to mention that Coinbase is listed, while it's only worth 76 b.

There's a rumor that the US might want to buy MSTR, nationalize it. Which is why they want its value to stay where it is, while S&P inclusion could increase its net worth and make it buy more bitcoin.
I guess that's also something the US doesn't want just yet, since the national reserve is almost non existent at this point.

Agree and what happen is not big deal at all. MicroStrategy accumulation is unpredictable and we don't know on how many Bitcoin purchase they will made on their next accumulation.
a

What's really important here is they accumulate and everything still good. Their consistency what matter the most and for sure that we could see more from them since Saylor also MicroStrategy is doing good then bullish with Bitcoin.

They don't care whatever price Bitcoin reach so they provably would buy more Bitcoin and hit some more volumes at the dip like current situation happening these days.
